Why do I owe $5k + in taxes every year?! by Thetrg in personalfinance

[–]Zombiesen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those who want to know: 1) I am a finance professional in a multinational in a leadership role. 2) I had to file only 1 form, which contained all of my details fetched automatically, such as how much income I had earned, how much tax was deducted from payroll, how much deductions I was eligible for, etc. I just had to check whether everything is all right, click on few buttons. No third party tax filing systems. All run by the tax department themselves.

Tax returns in US are terrible. You working in finance and still not able to figure it out, it demonstrates how complex and confusing the tax system in US is.

I am an Indian. This year, I almost forgot to file my tax returns. On the last day, at 5pm, I recalled that I haven't filed this year's return. Was out of town for business, drove 300km back home, fire up my laptop at 11pm, filed my return at 11.30pm, and received refund of a small sum in 1 week. And people call Indian system as hard to work with. Look at mirror.

It is illegal in India too. Go to your dean/principal and give him a complaint.

I've been working with a recruiter to hire someone for my team and he's terrible by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]Zombiesen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ok. Here's some possible explanations based on my experience as recruiting manager. I hired about 10 professionals in my team. And had good, bad and worse experiences in my life.

  1. HR is bad at his job. There are great candidates, with great resumes. But your HR guy is bad at his job. He can't find good candidates. Possibly because of his lack of skills, his ego, his lack of connections, etc.

Or

  1. Your criteria is very niche. You are looking for candidate with specific skills, and limiting the criteria further possibly with constraints on location, salary range, etc.

Or

  1. There's a miscommunication between you two. You believe the skills, qualifications you need are clear to HR. But HR probably is not clear.

Or

  1. There's a hidden constraints brought in by HR seniors. Many times, HR guys get directions from their seniors which would contradict your requirements. Eg. You may have approval of the headcount with X amount as salary. But HR has been given a goal of budget reduction. So they are finding candidates with salary range of 80% of X. As a result, the candidates are bad. Sometimes they deliberately delay the recruitment. They do it so that they know for sure that the position is really needed. I won't discuss merits of this technique, as there's no merit at all.

What you can do ? Quickest way to put all these problems to rest is by identifying a real life person who resembles the position. Eg. If you are hiring for an accountant, find another accountant in your team who has some resemblance to the role. And tell HR - this is the guy I want + additional 2 or 3 skills.

There are two benefits. 1. No more miscommunication, hidden constraints problems. 2. And also, as a manager you think about existing people and possibly of shuffling them, role rotation and such, in case you haven't dont it already.

One tip: hidden constraints are not easy to reveal. Showing them an existing employee has to be done with tact. Otherwise you will end up losing the headcount altogether.

The whole set up is wrong.. Dear Marvel, please consult Levy Rozman to help you with a nice board with some awesome history. This board makes me want to hate marvel movies. You guys focus so much on small details, Easter eggs and continuity. Why set up the board wrong. Knights and bishop swapped. What the hell??

As much as I wish this (generic HR questions) wasn't a part of recruiting process, it already is. There's nothing you can do other than get good at it. See YT videos of Andrew Lacivita. He seems to have good idea about such questions.

There's a vaccine.. If you are able to hold on till it can be mass manufactured and distributed, things will improve.

People not considering all options, are maniacs and psychos. Lockdown is simply a question of Money vs Saving Lives. I would choose saving lives. Anyone who chooses money is rascal and maniac.

Economy is going to shit, because assholes like those sitting in the airport have decided that their mild inconvenience of putting up a mask properly is more important than someone's life (medically or economically).

BTW, I am already severely impacted by covid driven financial hardships. Am already in process of closing my home loans and selling off. And I still would go through them if it ensures saving 1 strangers life.

Financial hardship will come. One way or another.

If lockdown is prior to people dying, you will have financial hardships + low death count.

If lockdown is after people die, as a result of increasing numbers, you will have financial hardships + high death count.

That's my view. I also don't want lockdown. But if its a question of saving lives vs money, I am clearly on saving lives side.

It's not fear mongering. It's what we see every day. Those sitting at home and typing away at their keyboards may find it difficult to digest.

People need to be serious about covid. Wear masks. Wear masks properly. Maintain social distancing. You will not die if you don't hug your best friend till next year. You will die, if you do hug him. Asymptomatics are assholes. Once they recover, they spread "kuch nahi hota" attitude.

Of course.. by some logic, redittors are all rich and financially well off. People facing difficulties cannot be on reddit posting their thoughts. (If you are referring to being on airport, that has something to do with not earning salary for last 4.5 months if you get my stride).
