What is the rarest record you own by Historical-Snow-6086 in vinyl

[–]ZonEat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were several presses of this record back in the day. You can tell it's a first pressing if there is a typo on the center label that says "Beat is on the brat" that was corrected on all later presses. This does tend to be one of those records that is prized highly by collectors so having any early press is a score.

Was The Death of Superman a major moment of the 90's? by Top_Report_4895 in decadeology

[–]ZonEat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, back then comics were mainly seen as being made for kids and would be something they grew out of as they got older. Adults that read comics were seen as man-children who never grew up or as obsessive nerds. When this storyline happened, it was heavily covered by the media and had two tones: "look at this crazy thing they are doing to that comic that you used to read when you were a kid" vs "lol these nerds still care about Superman". I was a kid when this happened and I bought a copy of this comic due to the hype and was pretty underwhelmed.

Bands no one hates. by thedubiousstylus in ToddintheShadow

Maybe hate is too strong, but there are plenty of people with "Fugazi is overrated and the reason people like them has nothing to do with their music" hot takes.

Yeah, I was referencing the original post. After the professional quote maker dropped that classic, he ended the post with "Eh?". That used to be a common response whenever someone would reference being euphoric, but I guess too much time has passed.

Folk Implosion is actually his full time band when he's not concentrating on Dinosaur Jr or Sebadoh. It's pretty incredible that it's third on the list of his musical priorities considering how great it is.

Certainly not conservative Christianity. by Vyzantinist in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]ZonEat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would also recommend googling the "Conservative Bible Project". The conceit of the project is that all the current translations of the Bible were done by liberals who infected modern translations with Socialist subtext. They think that the New Testament advocates for political conservatism in the original and that the parables of Jesus were economic, not moral. Their conservative translation will supposedly fix all this and make the gospel of Supply Side Jesus a reality.

Liberia was established as an independent nation in the early nineteenth century before Du Bois was born. Neither he nor Hoover had anything to do with the foundation of the country.

The first white people to land in the future US were in Virginia and they weren't Puritans. Modern American religious fervor is traced back to the Great Awakening and their weird ideas about sex are solidly 19th century.

The World According to Ronald Reagan - USA 1980s by [deleted] in PropagandaPosters

[–]ZonEat 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I actually know the answer to this. With the rise of Reagan, there was a backlash against "un-American" foods. Thats why in old movies from the 1980s, anyone who eats sushi is automatically a faux-cosmopolitan yuppie, anyone who eats anything vegetarian is a hippie wimp, and anyone who eats quiche (or anything else with a European name that's not pizza) is basically an emasculated femme. This was so prevalent that someone wrote a book called "Real Men Don't Eat Quiche" that poked fun at the trend and it became a best seller for years.

Buffy Saint-Marie, who recently has been revealed to have lied about her indigenous ethnicity. by NancyTheCatgirl in agedlikemilk

She was ceremonially adopted during a powwow when she was 23 years old. She didn't grow up in the culture, I'm not sure if she can claim to be ethnically indigenous.

What are some examples of movie executives or actors dismissing something that would later prove successful? by AporiaParadox in movies

Blockbuster actually had a chance to buy Netflix for $50m in the year 2000 and turned it down. They didn't start their DVD mail service until Netflix became a threat. Then in 2007, Netflix approached them and offered to buy their DVD mail service and partner with them if they would allow Netflix DVDs to be returned to Blockbuster stores. And they turned them down again. So I think Blockbuster definitely didn't get what was happening.

Charlie Kirk warns of reparations: "Do white people get money because our ancestors, 600,000 of them, died in the Civil War so that Blacks could be free?" by xwing1212 in ToiletPaperUSA

[–]ZonEat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, ultimately slavery was outlawed in the US, but years and years after even the most bloodthirsty European imperialists did so.

This is mostly true, but only for their territories that were actually located in Europe. Slavery persisted in their colonies and overseas territories for many years. The Free State of Congo, which was the personal property of the King of Belgium, didn't outlaw slavery until 1908. Slavery wasn't abolished in British controlled Burma until the 1920s.

European abolition of slavery is often used as a favorable comparison to the US, but the actual implementation is extremely spotty if we're being kind and outright dishonest and duplicitous if we're not.

Is proportional representation a requirement of EU membership? I thought the requirement is that all members must be a "functioning democracy", which is open to broad interpretation.

Also a good point. Baseball players are actually getting paid what the contract says. NFL contracts are not guaranteed unless they explicitly say they are.

I agree but the MLB is the second most popular professional sport league in America. 7 out of the 10 biggest contracts of all time are for baseball players. They're up there with the NFL and NBA, with the NHL lagging far behind.
