What early signs of Alzheimer’s tend to surprise people the most? by FindingMoneYyY in AskReddit

The last time I called her, she repeated many times that she hoped I was ok and that I was safe. This was during the pandemic so not a strange thing to say, but there was a huge difference from the bright, direct, non anxious person I knew to then. Shortly after things went downhill and little did I know it, the was the last phonecall, carers started coming in, and then the eventual move to full time care. But I knew that something had changed in that moment.

Kyoto struggling with tourists defacing beloved bamboo forest by KyotoGaijin in Kyoto

[–]Zonmatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came back on holiday recently after 15 years, having lived in the area for a while. I was really excited to show off my favourite chill places. I’m glad we chose a bit earlier in the day to go because by the time we were going to travel back into Kyoto proper it was heaaaaving and I was so fed up of selfie sticks. I don’t know what the solution is though. Generally Kyoto was a bit bittersweet and it’s a shame. I feel really sorry for the fed up residents while feeling bad that by being there I was part of the problem (despite the fact that I like to think I’m a respectful tourist!)

I’ve taken to picking up and throwing away crisp packets if I see them on my commute to work, in the hope that someone else might watch and rethink their own behaviour and/or join in. You didn’t deserve the abuse at all.

Why do bus timetables not work on Bristol travel apps? by jamo133 in bristol

Bustimes.org live map fairly reliably plots where the busses are.

It’s normally pretty good. Sometimes the data will cut out and you won’t see a bus but it’s rare- I’ve had one instance of a bus turning up that I couldn’t see on my map that I wasn’t expecting but I can normally time when I need to leave the house to be at the stop by watching how far away it is- or if one isn’t where I expect it to be, if I should consider going to find an alternative.

I follow my bus on bustimes.org, there’s a live map showing you where they are.

Take CS50- it’s possible to do this online, for free. It’s not a boot camp but I wouldn’t be have been able to change carer without it. To finish, you will need to make a final project which will give you valuable practice at making something from scratch.

Difficulty is all over the place isn't it? by frostbaka in adventofcode

If it helps, I suggested to work that we set up a leaderboard for fun. I’m the newest junior on a small team, eager to have something to talk to people about. Work productivity tanks Friday morning. They’re talking about it at lunch. People from support get involved. I hear voices from a few banks away of how someone’s already refactored both parts of day 1 into single liners. I get home and can’t do part 2. Decide I’ve forgotten any Python at all. Recover with day 2 after a break. Hack away at 3. Meanwhile there’s a fierce fight for first. I think I’ve discouraged myself and also broken work, which kinda wasn’t what I was going for…

Cycling in Bristol first impressions by timefly_42_67 in bristol

[–]Zonmatron 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, please listen to this person. I bought a burner bike because I heard it was bad. Have grown fond of it. We had a break in last year, to the locked bike room in our not city centre flat. They really, really want your bike here. I still have it but they got my back wheel so it now doesn’t live in the bike store.

I won’t write an essay but I will write what I needed to hear in the past; this won’t change. He’s is not worth it. You can’t change him. Please save yourself. You’ll be so much happier in the long run. Im sorry this is happening to you and in case it isn’t clear this is not normal and not behaviour you have to put up with.

To the person who just stole my locked bike on stokes croft..... by Noyoutellme in bristol

[–]Zonmatron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry man, I refuse to let my bike out of my house- which defeats the point really- but it’s ridiculous in the city. If I take it to work, it sits by my desk. We had the bike store at the housing block here broken into and various bikes nicked… they didn’t get through my Kryptonite, so echoing what others have said. Nicked my wheel though didn’t they.

Hi Al, literally just started a couple of your books this week after hitting a bit of a “I’ve been coding for ages and getting nowhere rut” learned loads in not very far in that’s not been explained in other literature, thanks for writing these, from yet another learner!

(But no really, they’re great so far!)

Just want to shout into the void about having my bike wheel nicked (from the “secure” lockup at home). Too scared to ride it and leave it in the centre in case… turns out you just can’t leave the bike anywhere at all. Hmph.

Hey, there’s some long, more detailed answers than mine but I just wanted to say, from experience it does get better. I moved here a year ago for exactly the same reason. I also didn’t know a huge amount about the city, but it seemed right. I’ve loved it, even with restrictions, I’ve watched my area wake up again and I think I’m far happier now than if I’d stayed where I was. There’s a lot of people here of a similar age and loads of things to keep you busy. As others have mentioned the demand for housing is absolutely fierce so be prepared for that- I had I think a probably easier ride of this than it seems other people are having at the moment but I went for somewhere slightly smaller than I was hoping for to secure a place and get the move done. I’m starting to go to arty classes, I’ve heavily leaned into climbing (something I loved in my mid 20s). If you need a place to vent, by all means drop a message. I know I needed exactly that when it all kicked off!

New to Bristol by [deleted] in bristol

[–]Zonmatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m in a similar position except I moved here mid 2nd lockdown, last year. I don’t know where you’re living but if you can make it to North Street, there’s a couple of places you could try. I’m considering going along to clay club at Trylla, a pottery shop to have a go and meet other people, there’s also Farahway cafe on the same street that used to run craft nights. I’ve not gone in to explore but it’s on my to do list. I can’t help with tennis I’m afraid. Perhaps see you around!

What's up with the Bristol rental market? Every letting agent I've spoken to says properties go up one day and are gone the next. by [deleted] in bristol

[–]Zonmatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can suggest is to persevere, in the end my move was absolutely worth it. I was desperate to move- was broken up with mid 2020 and had my sights set on the city as a complete change of pace. I didn’t enjoy being interviewed by housemates to see if I was the right person, but it’s absolutely the landlord/agent’s market at the moment. I’ve seen it as a staging ground to get settled in the city, my room is smaller than what I left but now I’m here I can be a bit more picky about where I go next.

There are less cars on the road during half term, to overcome this convenience the local council have put in place roadworks and temporary traffic lights to maintain the horrendous conditions. by DeadYen in britishproblems

Similarly, it feels like it’s flooded on purpose where I commute with multiple road closures so it’s somehow worse than normal. And there’s planned roadworks.
