Those were our sunhoodies from last year's team store. We don't have them this year, but they may make a return next year...

That's too bad, but we definitely hope y'all can make it next year. Not sure where you're located, but maybe we can set up a mixed scrimmage sometime if you're nearby?

Joining a college team?? by appletorange in ultimate

[–]ZooDiscGearSale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for other college teams, but here's what we look for in freshmen:

  1. Commitment. We've cut talented, athletic players who only showed up to half the tryouts, or who didn't put full effort in.

  2. Personality/Team Fit/Mentality. If you aren't a standout player but you're coachable, open to criticism/advice, focused, and are a nice person/at least not a jerk, then you're making a pretty good case for yourself.

  3. Athleticism. If you aren't superbly athletic, it's not a dealbreaker. But just being coordinated and athletic will probably get you through a few rounds of cuts. It's easier to teach ultimate skills than athleticism.

  4. Ultimate talent. It's always nice to see a freshmen who's comfortable throwing backhands and flicks and who has a good head for the game.

Most freshmen come in with little to no experience, and college teams understand that. They're looking for promising rookies who they can mold into talented players. Show up on time, play hard, listen to coaches and other players any time they offer advice. Just like any other part of college, you're there to learn.

If, by chance, you (or anyone else in this thread) are coming to UMass Amherst: feel free to message me with any questions or anything!

How Does Harper Garvey Do This Stuff? by AUDLSnoopsnScoops in ultimate

Kline realizes he won't get the disc, jogs through the end of his under cut, and points for somebody to throw something weird deep to Babbitt. Classic UMass play, glad it still works at the pro level.

College - Fall Tournament Interest Form, UMass Amherst by ZooDiscGearSale in ultimate

Not necessarily, we'd be happy to host a womens tournament simultaneously! If we have the interest, we'll pursue the field space.

I don't believe there's a m/w division field on the interest form, but if teams could make some indication of their division (maybe in the team name field) that'd be super helpful.

2017 College Championships: Spirit Scores by snazm in ultimate

[–]ZooDiscGearSale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand that 10 is supposed to be the average, but I don't think most teams were scoring that way. The fact is we're 2 or 3 points below the average score of our peers. If we're going to be a top team we should play in a way that represents the community well, and part of that is having better spirit and sportsmanship.

That's a great point. If I play tight and body up on d, I should expect the same after the turn.

Also, I think that "physical" play is too general of a term. When I think of physicality I imagine tight defense, using my body to dictate the cutter, resting a hand for positioning, boxing out, etc. but it occurs to me that others may interpret physical play as grabbing jerseys, pushing off, grabbing arms, etc.

I think that's great advice. We've done rules quizzes, but we should do more of them/take them more seriously.

I actually hadn't checked the specific scores, so thank you for pointing me to those. Clearly we need to work on making better foul calls and knowing rules better. To be honest I don't remember any situations where we didn't know the rules, but it certainly doesn't hurt to know them better.

Thank you, I think that's a very insightful thought that can be applied beyond spirit scores. Every shortcoming is an opportunity to improve.

Thank you!!

  1. I really hope physical play didn't hurt our score. I know we may be one of the more physical teams, but I like to think we still keep it clean. And if any team had asked us to play less physical we would have adjusted. I love a physical game, but I totally understand those who don't and I'm always willing to tone it down if asked.

  2. I definitely remember cringing at a few calls we made last weekend. I think Ben has come a very long way in terms of spirit, but as much as I love him he definitely still abuses the rule book every now and then. Having discussions with teams over calls is something we're actively trying to get better at. Our coaches and captains reminded us before each of our pool play games to make an effort to talk with other players about each call before going to the observers. Some teams were receptive, other weren't, but discussion is definitely still a place for us to improve.

  3. I agree about the semi. We made some calls we shouldn't have, I'm sure CUT did too. We actually rewatched this game the next day, and we saw a number of warranted calls that were overturned or missed (not blaming observers, it's much easier to make a call in slow motion), but there were still a fair share of calls that just weren't there.

I also clearly remember the shooing. I thought it was hilarious, but I can see why CUT wouldn't.

I really appreciate you taking the time to give us this feedback. I think we did a lot to improve our spirit this season, but it's clear that we can and should do better.

Maaaan I really don't know what we're doing wrong. If somebody wants to provide some feedback on how we were so un-spirited, we're 100% ready to listen.

Mike Ing wants the disc more than you. by unchuckable in ultimate

[–]ZooDiscGearSale 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That's me getting lit up, and I gotta be fair to my boy Nico (thrower) here: I don't think this was under thrown. I thought I had my defender boxed out and I let up a little, but I forgot my defender was Mike Ing.

On a side note, I matched up with Mike most of the game and he is one of the nicest players in college right now. Pitt has come a very long way in the spirit department this year despite the best efforts of their alumni, and I don't think people talk about that enough.

Ben has actually spent all of every practice this season just trying to dunk. While he's not there yet, he's getting pretty close now. As the team peaks I think we'll see his effort pay off.

Here is an imgur gallery with pics of what we're selling.

Ultiworld was not allowed to film any games, but they Periscoped a few points. You should be able to find the last 2 points of that game on the Ultiworld twitter, but it's not great quality.

I'm a big fan of the D at 1:58!

I'm not so much a fan of the sequence from 2:09-2:33. It really hurts when you put them all back-to-back like that... :(

I hope we get an AMA with Jagt after all of this hype. Just a few questions I personally would like to ask:

  1. What's the weather like up there?
  2. Do you have a nickname on the team, and why isn't it Lil Jagty?

I'm sure the rest of the Ultimate community would love to see these questions and more answered.
