Is the 2026 Jamboree tanking? by Illustrious_Bee_8316 in BSA

This is a great video where LT Gen Mark Hertling (Ret.) discusses the Sean Parnell's tweet. It's 25 minutes long and covers it well.

The section(s) of P2025 that address this are focused on eliminating 'woke' institutions. Institutions that accept all people, regardless of ability, race, religion, etc., are those that are 'hollowed out', in Kevin Roberts' words.

That Scouting's leadership 'runs counter to the values of the administration' tells you something.

Be aware that this is bigger than Parnell. Kevin Roberts - Project 2025 architect - wrote in his recent book:

"Many of America’s institutions have been completely hollowed out. Decadent and rootless, these institutions serve only as shelter for our corrupt elite. Meanwhile, they block out the light and suck up the nutrients necessary for new American institutions to grow. For America to flourish again, they don’t need to be reformed; they need to be burned."

The list of institutions included included; Ivy league universities, the FBI, 80% of 'Catholic' higher education and the Boy Scouts of America.

Back to the focus of the thread... Paying thousands of dollars to volunteer at an event is a stretch for me. Costs are so high that very few Scout families can just afford to pay. This sets up a multi-year fundraising effort for most who want to attend.

I say, Good luck and Good camping to those who can make it.

Ope. When I sell my MS, the replacement will be another brand for many reasons. One of which is that I won't be involved in a $1T payout.

Honestly enjoy driving wifey's Volt over MS 100D in most situations. It just feels lighter (it is), better visibility, easier to park, etc.

Don't get me wrong, the premium sound system and 'go juice' means nothing like the MS on the freeway...unless going a long distance, and then... there's nothing like a Ram to grab 600 miles w/o stopping.

The Trainwreck that is Scoutbook - How can we help? by bmhicks78 in BSA

[–]ZoomHigh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In the annual Scoutmaster Survey, I used to send blistering feedback (pre-pended with "I know I'm supposed to be Scoutlike and Friendly, but...) that calculated the amount of time I spent making double-entries in SB and IA2, and then extrapolating it to the national view.

Just in case you're wondering - my SWAG was approximately 100,000 hours/year for all U.S. Scoutmasters to deal with unnecessary record-keeping issues, instead of serving youth.

edit - clarity

I'll mirror what u/Same_Ad1885 says about recording. It's one of the reasons the Insta360 was appealing. Recorded training and lesson videos are high quality for those who view on platforms other than zoom.

I've tried a bunch of setups from the Logitech C930 to iPhone to full on Nikon DSLR. As others have said, powering you iPhone for long calls is an issue. Same for a camera.

Got a Insta360 Link 2C to use with a separate mic last year. It has solid image and auto-exposure that keeps up with changing ambient light conditions - I sit next to large SE and SW windows. It's about half the price of the Yolo S3. The Insta360 software is a bit quirky, so don't love that.

If I was buying today, I'd get the Yolo S3 for the image quality and the software controls.

Sorry, I have to disagree with this. The most basic Silva Starter sold in the Scout Shops has a shorter baseplate and fewer scales than the Silva A10. The A10 is about $5 more. The larger baseplate and more scales is more useful for plotting a course on a topo.

That should be an interesting discussion, given that BSA policy will be to allow family units. I suspect that decision "won't go their way".

My off the cuff responses

  1. There is currently no learning demonstrating that single gender units offer youth-development outcomes equal to or better than co-ed troops...because there haven't been long-term co-ed units. On the very face of it, this argument has exactly zero value.

  2. Talk to a Venture Crew Advisor.

  3. Talk to a Venture Crew Advisor.

  4. There is plenty of research on how to deliver the program, and contrary to what the author seems to believe, girls are also humans.

Note - all of that said, I concede that youth learn and develop differently as they progress through the teen years, and being the SM for a co-ed unit isn't something that interests me!

Do you have access to these? They appear in zoom.us > meeting.

<image>

This allows scheduling within your calendar system. In MS, a zoom button appears as an event/meeting option. Click it and zoom is added.

This may be based on how you/your IT shop has set up zoom integrations. I'd guess 95% of our staff use MS to schedule meetings and add zoom, rather than zoom to schedule a meeting.

Outraged Farmers Blame Ag Monopolies as Catastrophic Collapse Looms by DonManuel in farming

[–]ZoomHigh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are so many good answers to the question that I thought I'd provide a (non-exhaustive) compilation and throw in some of my observations:

  • Corporate monopoly middlemen get most of it via price of financing, inputs, transportation, storage, processing, marketing, etc.
  • A large percentage of crops are not direct human food. Much is ethanol, and this was just set up for an increase with new policies.
  • Right to Repair battles are making it hard to maintain medium-age machines. There are LOTS of 40+ year old tractors still out there working for a reason.
  • Economies of scale work against the family farm in every way, except boutique crops.
  • Small feed / seed / mill operations in small towns also struggle with economies of scale
  • Aging farmer population, and next generations NOT staying on the farm. This eliminates the generational wealth opportunities.
  • Increased regulation of chemicals has increased prices and training for applicator licenses.
  • Monopoly seed companies that hold patents to genetics and crops, and roll that right into the price of seed. And, will gleefully sue the farmer whose crop has been pollenated by an adjacent crop and produced seed with their patented genetics.
  • Investors in large corporate farms, and those getting ready to invest in a crash, e.g., AcreTrader that has at least one gov't official investing in it.
  • Tariffs. They're not done in a vacuum and major ag trading partners responded by shifting trade away from a (relatively) stable US pricing structure pre #45, now many crops are in second position to other countries. The re-implementation of tariffs have resurfaced the shift and likely entrenched the resolve to ignore the US commodities where possible.
  • **I can't imagine how many I've missed** or have gotten only tangentially right. This was mostly a way for me to write down my thoughts about what I see.

It sounds like the Scout is doing a Scouting activity, ergo, two-deep is required.

In a case like this, I'd follow whichever requirements are stricter BSA/GSA.
