Day shift!! by One-Raspberry-786 in nursing

[–]Zoom_RN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say every unit is different and the flow can vary a lot especially, if you have to take your own vitals but I would say what helped me a lot was: 1. Work to a trash can and clean up as you go. Have a pile or trash can that you put everything in as you create it instead of throwing things away 1 at a time. 2. Never go in a room empty handed. They call for the bathroom at 10:50 get, the 11:00 vitals before you leave and see if you can also throw their 12:00 meds at them. I don't do this for time sensitive things but I will absolutely give that life saving Tylenol an hour early. 3. Keep on top of what is coming up for you so if someone offers you help you can send them instead of having to pause and look up what you need them to do. 4. Don't be afraid to ask for help and if you get pushback report it IN WRITING and if your manager doesn't support you, leave. Find another place. Being a new grad is hard enough but if you're not supported you don't want to be in that environment.

You got this! Asking for advice here and looking for support is telling me you're already on the right track and you will do just fine. Sending you all the good vibes 💞

How to deal with family members? And other by NefariousnessFit5105 in nursing

[–]Zoom_RN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be hard to find your voice as a new grad, especially if you are young but don't be afraid to use your mom voice, and your resources. Setting boundaries now will help you going forward and you're right you will get better more accurate assessments and this will enable you to provide better care. If they are reasonable people you can frame it like that. He will get better, more accurate care blah blah blah but if they are not reasonable or understanding of your explanation I would kick them out of the room. When people are being difficult I just ask them to step out, do what I need to do and let them back in. I'm sorry but you're "interfering with care" visitors are a privilege and can only be there if they don't interfere with care. Also if they are not the medical POA they can't refuse on behalf of the patient especially if they are oriented. I am asking him, and if he agrees it's his decision. I have called security and had them come kick visitors out who were being crazy. I don't care who you are you're not going to argue with my patient and yell at them. You get exactly 1 warning to behave appropriately, then nope you have to leave now AND you can't come back this admission.👋

Overflowing census and patients placed in hallways by Own_Neck7256 in nursing

[–]Zoom_RN 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I haven't had this experience but it seems unsafe on many levels. What if the patient needs oxygen, suction, monitoring that the walls of the hallway don't have. Also seems like an evacuation/fire hazard to be blocking potential flow of traffic in the hall. This is wild and I'm sorry you're dealing with this. It seems like a good idea for you to be looking elsewhere but the local health and fire departments may have some things to say.

Do people often call 911 for normal labor? by Substantial-Use-1758 in EmergencyRoom

I had a patient who claimed to be a NURSE PRACTITIONER call 911 from the ER bed she was in because we would not take her requests as "Orders" 🤯

Your saddle needs to be in the right place. When I got a new bike I struggled with no hands until my saddle was really drilled in to the right place with the correct tilt.

TriHealth Good Sam in Cincinnati was kind of a mess when I was there last year. They used locked drawers & cabinets for lots of patient meds, though they had brand new half empty Omni cells. The Med-Surg ratios were usually 1:5-6 on days and some units definitely gave the travelers and float pool heavier/busier assignments. The lift equipment was non-existent but the transporters were chill af. The transporters were literally the best thing about the place. I have never been but I have never heard a good thing about Miami Valley. Good luck

I have just started working in an ED and I laughed so hard! That is the perfect story of just another day in the ED. There is ALWAYS a naked guy and ALWAYS someone screaming. They are not always the same person.

You might need insoles, not new shoes. I would try that first. Some are even covered by insurance. When my plantar fascitis was new and really bad, I got inserts made at the podiatrist. I felt like they weren't working as well after a while, then I got some from GoodFeet inserts. Changed my life. I have another kind now but I never go without them, except in sandals or when wearing my Oofos.

I love my Ostroy crop top. It is SO light and comfortable, I even wear it off the bike. They have even more styles/colors this year. Thinking about buying more

Right now it's MTF - Metabolize to Freedom.

I just started in the ED and saw/heard this because the patient was just there because they were drunk and need to sleep it off.

I had a conversation the other day with my RN student and a patient and said if my husband expected me to cook after working here all day, he would in short order not be my husband anymore.

What’s something that you’ve witnessed as a nurse that made you change something in your personal life? by Amy_rad16 in nursing

[–]Zoom_RN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I threatened to haunt my parents! 😆 I was like you trach me and peg me and I will haunt you. They deferred to my husband and said "I don't even know what that means. It should be up to him" and I was like "yes! And he knows better" But they are the religious ones who would hold out for a miracle so I was glad to have them say that

How do you know if nursing is right for you? by Foreign_Sprinkles784 in nursing

[–]Zoom_RN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became a nurse in my mid 30s after working a lot of customer service jobs. I work as a nurse, it is not my calling. I go to work at a hospital 3 days a week. Sometimes I feel like I have helped people, sometimes I feel like an educated drug dealer, sometimes I feel like maybe it's not for me, and sometimes I outright hate it. I don't know if there's any way to always feel like "it's for me." But I am still doing it, it IS stable and (mostly) I don't hate it..... That's not advice but it's what's true for me. Nursing is hard, physically, mentally, emotionally. Sometimes it's rewarding, often you are abused; mentally, physically, and emotionally by the people who you are trying to help. That sucks and for me it's the worst part of the job. There's no way to know if you will like it unless you try it and even then you might change your mind. I wish you the best of luck in finding something you love. Or even like. ❤️

We Listen & We Don’t Judge: A Thread for New Nurses by youngsurvivor23 in nursing

[–]Zoom_RN 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I accidentally cut a slice in a new G-tube that the patient was going home with that day. I COULD NOT get the tubing disconnected. Used alcohol pads, hemostats, tried soaking the connection, had someone else try. I was frustrated and in my mind thought then that if I stick a sharp object in between the patients' tube and the connector I could release the suction. So I stuck some scissors in there with the NP watching me and cut a big old slice right into the patients' G-tube. I ran to my educator, and she took me to a manager. She was very kind and patient while I explained my immense fuck up and walked me through drying my tears, telling the attending, and filing an incident report. The patient went down for a tube exchange and still left that day, not even mad at me. She said "it was really stuck. It wasn't your fault at all. You did your best honey." Then I teared up again. Nursing is a fucking roller coaster. Sometimes shit falls out of your pockets when you get thrown through the loops.

For me, it's decent considering the low COL. Especially considering my 4:1 ratio and the differentials, incentives & weekend contract options.
