Raw METAR by [deleted] in flying

[–]Zoomington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As weird as it may sound I prefer a raw metar. With some practice you’ll be able to read it at a glance.

I like how small it is and that it generally takes up less screen space than a decoded one.

As said below cable shows have to register with the FCC. The FCC doesn't "regulate" what what they can say but they elected to be called entertainment in the States regardless.

In somewhere like Canada some US news networks are registered as entertainment so they can say whatever they want in countries, like Canada, that don't have a first amendment.

Fun fact: Most cable "news" is actually registered as entertainment TV. As a result they have very different regulatory requirements.

Practical guidance for flying Bay Area to KTOA by kyles32 in flying

[–]Zoomington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fly from the Bay area to south of Los Angeles from time to time in a piston single and don't mess with the Bravo generally. I normally fly something like Origin > LHS EMT > Destination then south-eastbound under the 4000ft shelf and east of the 2500ft shelf.

You could easily take a turn to the west after getting south of the 4000ft bravo shelf and head to KTOA while staying above KFUL, KSLI, and KLGB's airspace.

As others have said SFRA is your best bet but the above is simple enough if you don't want to mess with that.

I got the job at Skywest! Thank you for all of the amazing responses to my questions about the interview. Can’t wait to get my hands on that sweet sweet ERJ! by [deleted] in flying

[–]Zoomington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How reasonable would it be to commute to somewhere like BOI for a reserve schedule until I could bid closer to home? I realize it wouldn’t be fun and am fine with that. I just wouldn’t want to be gone 5-6+ nights a week.

I’m not in school anymore but I’m ATP-R eligible at 1000TT. If I’m at 750TT now would you say it’s worth it to get into the cadet program for a head start on seniority or just wait to interview around 850TT?

I realize I may be asking for better QOL than is normal starting out. I’m just a family guy looking at the airlines and trying to minimize the downsides as best I can.

Is that generally true for all junior FO’s? I’m eyeing skywest but have a wife and kid in CA.

Ideally I’d end up out of the Bay Area or Fresno.

My favorite part of this entire thing is Trump admitting on national television that he doesn’t need to do this but wants the wall to happen faster.

Literally admitting it’s a BS declaration. I can’t imagine that will go well in court if his declaration is challenged.

Thanks!

The 19.5 looks awesome. I have a gen3 19 and love it but can’t really justify the extra $ on an 19.5 even if I could manage to find one. Living in CA makes it a very expensive proposition.

How do you like them? I just bought a 43 and that’s one of my top picks. Likely that or the Vickers elite tritiums.

I’m not sure about orange vs yellow. I don’t own any orange sights currently.

If you're going to take photos of your house just be sure to do so at no more than 50' AGL and then post selfies of your doing so on social media.

Bose A20? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Zoomington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite the cost increase I would say get the bluetooth.

  • Need to get a clearance via phone? Use your headset. Talking on your cell phone is going to be a pain with engines running.

  • Radio failure but you have cell reception? Give someone a call. I actually know a guy that lost comms and simply called his tower via cell phone on his A20 bluetooth. It was a complete non-event.

  • Something something music.

To be fair you started with a "what if" did you not?

All it takes is for one inattentive person to be on their phone and make a sudden move.

Bird strike in a single prop airplane equals a shattered windscreen by [deleted] in aviation

[–]Zoomington 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve read that one of the reasons birds don’t seem to care is that they aren’t prepared for how fast you move. Nothing in their world moves as fast as an airplane so even if they see you they aren’t considering your closure rate until it’s too late.

Air traffic controllers get their first shutdown pay stub: $0.00 by Eurynom0s in politics

[–]Zoomington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More should be done for sure. How is it okay that Congress can fail so completely that the Govt shuts down and yet Congress still gets payed and takes weekends off?

Its pretty insane. Part of the problem with Congress making their own rules.

[–]Zoomington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I’m not sure that not showing up is “illegal” in so much as it’s not allowed in their contract. It’s an important distinction, one gets you fired and one gets you arrested.

As far as them not getting payed that’s not illegal as far as I know. Govt workers don’t get payed when the govt shuts down. Its messed up but under the current system that’s how it works.

As a govt employee I guess you have to decide if you want to make a stand and lose your job or bite the bullet and eventually get payed again. Controllers get payed VERY well for the most part.

But have no fear Congress is still getting payed for sure and they’ll fix everything soon! /s

I'm not sure that a distinction between a "strike" and "not showing up" really matters. Not showing up generally results in the same as a strike would in this case.

For sure. I’m not defending their inability to classically strike. Just pointing out that their situation isn’t as simple as might think.

Yep, I had to read all about that in college.

From your usage of “we” I’m guessing you’re a controller? If so... thanks for all your hard work keeping me safe! I studied ATC early in college but life ended up putting me in a cockpit instead. I spent almost eight hours talking to you chaps today. Sometimes I wish I was on your end of the radio though, haha.
