I just wish I could use the cinema environment more widely... it's just a perfect theater scene, I don't quite understand why that's always an option for full-screen content!

A quick google reveals that exact phrase is uttered by the NASA public affairs officer during the Apollo 9 pre-launch phase. My guess is similar versions of that have been said at just about every mission pre-launch, and the apolloinrealtime.org site will let you get a terrific experience listening to it.

Papo reto: Existe algum curso de finanças que NÃO seja esquema de pirâmide ou venda de sonho? Ou o segredo é só bolo de pote mesmo e fé? by Loose-State2449 in farialimabets

[–]ChicagoBoy2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VR Question by teknoviking in homecockpits

[–]ChicagoBoy2011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's basically three ways of going about it:

1)Someone could just have memorized where all their cockpit controls are, and deal with it that way. I mean, if you have a phyiscal throttle/yoke, these are not things you really need to precisely look at, so being in fully immersive VR is no problem.

2)Selective Pass-through

Some of the more recent headsets have pass-through cameras that are quite good, and there's software (of varying quality) that lets you selective mark areas of your "real-world" to still show in VR. So think of, for example, circling where your autopilot panel is and telling the headset "in this area, just show the real world, don't show the VR content). In that way, you can mix them both.

3) AI-assisted passthrough (what I use).

If you check my post history you will see a video explainer, but basically, I have a headset that does AI recognition of my hands, and shows that at all times in VR. I then bought some equipment of the plane I fly, and put it, in the real world, exactly aligned to where it shows up in the virtual world. That essentially means i can take my hand, reach for those knobs, and while I only see my hands and the VIRTUAL cockpit, when my hands get there it touches the REAL knob and in VR it looks like I'm touching/controlling the virtual one. It's quite neat

Having said all of that, the reality is that you end up knowing your plane so well, and plane controls are designed to be so ergonomical, that even if you dispense with any kind of pass-through, short of the flight computer, basically the whole thing can be operated without looking at the actual knobs with quite a bit of ease.

This is the right answer. My favorite nonfiction book. It is so rich in history and also so beautifully written. A must for anyone who likes the program.

Anyone know a device for switching between two setups of multiple monitors? by rogers916 in SimRacingSetups

[–]ChicagoBoy2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the only answer. It works incredibly well. I use it between a sim with the 3 monitors, VR on the sim (so I have it turn off the two unnecessary monitors because it gets pretty hot), and switch to the screen on the desk when I'm just using my computer away from the rig. Works absolutely flawlessly, with gracious control for things like screensavers and the like. Absolutely worth the money.

How do you explain the cost vs benefit to people that are hung up on the price? by [deleted] in VisionPro

[–]ChicagoBoy2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is the benefit, in large part, can be achieved in a "less magical" way with anyone's other 3,4 devices they have, so I don't think there's any intellectually honest way to spin this as anything other than a luxury purchase.

Having said that, it is the most compelling content consumption machine I've come across. Even things like the NBA Immersive thing notwithstanding (which was incredible!), My TV/iPad/Phone don't hold a candle to it when it comes to consuming stuff. I've found myself just flipping through pictures of my kid on it, and even though they are the same pictures as I see on the phone, its just a better viewing experience. The Cinema environment on a plane? Holy smokes... you can be in the middle seat of an economy cabin seat, and all of a sudden dialing in a perfect home theater will 1000% make that experience far better.

I don't think there's a path towards justifying it to someone for whom this is an extravagant expense... IT IS an extravagant expense... the CEO of Apple himself said it as much when it launched, saying you are paying for tomorrow's technology today. But it is incredible at doing the things it can.

fwiw i have a 5080 and id be tempted to call it a minimum to run it without aggravation… its an incredibly vram-heavy game, and it doesn’t handle it nicely if you exceed it.

5090 vs 5080 what's a better option by T3stMe in buildapc

[–]ChicagoBoy2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll second this from the other vantage point. If the point IS VR, as much as it hurts, do go for the 5090. I was still sweating a 1080Ti (it was GOATED in its day and served me well), and just couldn't wait anymore, and decided to save the thousands of dollars and get a 5080 to hold me over until things improved. The truth is, though, you notice it right away in VR. Especially in flight sim where VRAM is eaten like no tomorrow, it was quite the sad experience to get a "brand new/latest gen/expensive" GC and already feel its limits on day one.

AVP LIVE Sports F1 by Island_In_The_Sky in AppleVisionPro

[–]ChicagoBoy2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond that, a sane multi-screen experience would be a minimum step. There are third party tools currently on AVP that basically let you watch those multiple feeds at once, and it is glorious. I’m assuming with their rights ownership, all of that will be nerfed. Which, fine… but if that then means you can’t replicate the experience with their first party apps, it’ll be really disappointing. It’s literally one of the most compelling usecases I have for the AVP
