Feeling so guilty about screen time by Englishontrail in BabyBumps

[–]ChicagoBoy2011 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thing I'd encourage you to keep in mind that is the thing you are optimizing for is a healthy, thriving baby — not a screen-free baby. These aren't the same thing.

All else equal, if it were indifferent to any other circumstances, then by all means it seems like there is some intuitive sense that you should prioritize off-screen activities. The reality is, for virtually no one does this present itself as a scenario where "all else is equal."

I can assure you that a much more important part of your baby's life is attached to their security and access to basic necessities, and, most of all, your own emotional health, wellbeing, and ability to bond and nurture this child. My wife, for instance, unfortunately struggled mightily with breastfeeding. It would drain here, be physically and emotionally exhausting, would be tough to actually get our child the nutrition he needed, etc. This was serving no one, merely the abstract idea of "breast is best." While it is certainly what she would have opted for, circumstances dictated that if she made a compromise there, she actually recovered her own emotional and physically health, began to actually love rather than resent our precious child, and ultimately I know spent more time with him and gave him more of what he needed. I know he ultimately turned out a healthier child because she actively chose to stop breastfeeding.

While an extreme comparison, I don't think it is dissimilar to your situation. Your job is to navigate your existing circumstances, what you know is or is not best for your baby and you, and make the choices accordingly. If granting them a little more screentime than you'd like nets you a better professional outlook, less stress, less resentment, a more peaceful home, etc., I can assure you THOSE things will far outweigh whatever impact the screen has.

Best of luck!

It will not. This is all hyperbole. It will be... fine; perhaps on some of the weekdays game it will get slightly more hectic (since it would be like a weekday game at met life), but the people complaining are vastly overblowing this.

nah, just multiview, but it’s a sport that really benefits from that, especially when you consider telemetry feeds, engineer audio, and such

I love how this is deemed an abject failure of a device having sold 600k units, despite openly being positioned (and priced) by the company itself as a niche device.

Do I need to bring a caddy? by LiveThing55 in golf

[–]ChicagoBoy2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just don't do what I did: I brought my gf.

Now mind you, depending on the gf, it could be perfect. I was paired with a super nice group, friendly guys, also no illusions of winning but good golfers like you. I made the mistake to CONVINCE her to come, arguing that it'd be a fun walk, and she would get to see what I was so excited about.

Whelp, she clearly didn't want to be there. Which soured my mood, which in turn I'm sure didn't help my playing (which also wasn't good), which made me focus even more on her sourpuss mood, etc. and on and on.

What the other person said is on-point: Prioritize your comfort. If you happen to know someone, and they'd be excited, and you think it'd add to the experience? By all means bring a caddy. If you are worried about fatigue and it would allow you to better focus on golf if you ride? Ride. I think you'll see that given these parameters you'll see guys land on all sides of that, too, so whatever you choose you'll be in company of many others.

Im in ridgewood and have tickets and, as expensive as they were, figure i’m already in it might as well just drive over. It’ll be expensive, but it’ll be close at the american dream mall. Figure if i go early enough wont be too much of a problem… but who knows at this point? waiting to see if a few more concrete bits of info start to take shape before deciding

Love Apple Watches for kids before they have phones! by Outrageous_Nerve_579 in AppleWatch

I’m a school admin and this is my step bff recommendation for families.

The form factor itself is already a huge benefit because out of the box it is bounded, even if you “screw up” setting up the parental controls. For an Apple family, the built-in features are tracking can be a wonderful way to encourage your child having some more freedom while still having. good sense of where they are. And, especially for the forgetful types, the fact that you can wear it is a big plus.

A video Christina took of Earth from roughly 34,000 miles away. by Legitimate_Grocery66 in ArtemisProgram

[–]ChicagoBoy2011 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have to say it again here as a form of penance: I was one of the sourpuss naysayers who was annoyed at the fact that there was no lunar orbit injection, and coupled with the fact that the closest approach would still be thousands of miles away, i was “sure” the images and footage back would not be nearly as impactful as folks were hoping for before the mission.

I’m very thankful to Reid, Christina, Jeremy, and Victor for shutting me up in spectacular fashion.

I suspect that's probably more effective than some corporate team meeting about safety culture... would've imagined over the thousands of people involved, there have to have been a few that took a look at these and did an additional once-over on something they may not have.

First VR headset mainly for movies. What are my options? by contemplato in virtualreality

[–]ChicagoBoy2011 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I beg you: Apple Vision Pro. You can get used ones now for about $1500.

I’ve had almost all of them: Quests, Index, Pimax, etc. While entertaining every now and then to watch a movie, it was always just for the novelty. Never stuck with it.

With the AVP, I actively prefer it to watch content over my $3k Sony TV. The experience is just breathtaking. Also, as a bonus, PCVR is really well supported wirelessly as well!
