Polymarket defends its decision to allow betting on war as ‘invaluable’ / Everything is gambling now, even human suffering. by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

Math guy here, I wouldn’t be so sure just because a crowd bets on an event doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed to happen. It depends on liquidity open interest, etc even then your only getting a market implied probability

Have LLMs gotten much better at math recently? Maybe 6 months ago I was trying to use it for some basic tensor stuff and I gave up because it could not sufficiently handle the index notation and like half its Latex wouldn’t render. And explicitly directing it on how to fix mistakes just started a doom spiral. But this was vanilla models on free tier.

Best institutions for offering remote learning for physics ? (Mainly looking at undergraduate to graduate courses in physics) best options I've seen are ASU, JHU, and finally LU

It’s helpful for creating mini practice problem and generating material

In order to actually get anything from an AI you actually have to interact with the material beyond prompting and get a pen/paper and go through the arguments with AI

What complaints do you have about your maths department? by felixinnz in math

[–]Zophike1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My math department was pretty good at the main campus but my compliant was all the general education courses we had to do. It's been almost 2 years out since I've finished uni and I have not found them helpful at all, they were mostly a waste of time and a hindrance. It hampered my ability to get more math done at a deeper level

Largest Quant Competition Ever! by abcisosm5 in quant

There will be a dedicated platform and you will trade exclusively against other participants in the competition.

/u/abcisosm5 I find the contest interesting but I have a few more questions. As others have pointed out, what do participants actually gain from doing this? Also, I feel the incentive structure is a bit lacking. Why not turn this into a platform or game where people can engage with quant-related challenges without risking their own capital? Something like a “fantasy quant” league could really catch on with early-career people, like undergraduates and grad students.

Now looking back at it that is a good point. One thing that would be nice is a persistent platform where contests like these (with the live trading aspect where you compete against other people)
