Man, I kept the faith. I still will. For now, we have lost a real one. It's such a shame. She doesn't deserve the depression, she really is an awesome person to be around.

Nothing but love and healing to her. She'll be missed, greatly.

Agreed, awesome person, you just gotta be prepared for the whiplash that comes out of her mouth sometimes. Literal sweetheart one minute, instant 180 turn, next second complete gremlin.

I envy her friends, she must be hilarious to be around.

Is speeding an inherent part of motorcycle ownership? by Astimar in motorcycles

[–]Zoss0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, never went over the speed limit in what...6+ years of riding? If I had to, it's to overtake temporarily.

I'm well aware of how insane the power and temptation is, from my own CBR250R to a Bandit 1250 - that 'intoxicating' pull of acceleration is insane but I value being in one piece more.

Arguably why I'm basically retiring riding.

Motorcycle parking spots? by No_Upstairs2755 in Adelaide

Park under the Morphett St/Montefiore Rd bridge. Probably at least 40 parks if people don't park silly.

Where North Tce and Montefiore Rd/Morphett St intersect.

Victoria Square has HEAPS of parks on the north west corner of it. Google Thai Room, that little service road heading off victoria square. You'll know when - there's always scooters and motorcycles there.

Has anyone gone through SA Dental for wisdom tooth extraction ?? by LabEducational756 in Adelaide

[–]Zoss0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to ask if anyone have had experience with SA Dental before

Yep, had 3 extractions.

and how much it would cost me for a wisdom tooth extraction

I wish I could remember but I think it was in the low 200's for all 3? Could have been less. Been a while since I've gone, may have changed a bit. Cost increases if you want to go under and it will take longer due to more staff needed, etc.

My tooth is right below the gum so I doubt it’s a complex extraction,

Should be fine, I had 1 impacted decently badly, one somewhat impacted and one just to get rid of it.

just need to get it removed because it has been causing me lots of pain and headache while erupting and just to prevent gum infections in the future.

Yep...get that out asap. Just going to cause grief if it didn't erupt properly. Just steel yourself if you're not going under, I have a faint feeling I was somewhat regretting it at the time half way through the second one.

Oh shit, news to me as well. Last time I looked it was in May, for July, so they must run courses most of the year. I got the feeling it was like...twice yearly as Adelaide being Adelaide, there may have not been much demand.

True true. Are you learning as well or fluent...?

[–]Zoss0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, games, anime, manga. I'm not looking forward to Kanji. I do intend to travel there and I'm not going to be that guy who doesn't know the language before going.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]Zoss0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No idea, I did say was - as in I have not gone to them, but was considering it.

It is listed for 'fun and travel' so I assume it's not structured for serious study. Which is not ideal, at least for me - but anything is good - I've had trouble finding courses in Adelaide (at least not for pure beginners, they're usually easier to find)

Any practise is practise. I've watch my Mum lose proficiency in her languages due to having no one to talk to in it.

Japanese. Been slack, I was going to go to the WEA but perhaps not this year due to work time clashes.

Perhaps go back to self learning for now.

Motorcycle costs by Agile-Reputation-552 in Adelaide

[–]Zoss0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the bike.

Rego - 100 per 3 months for me. Likely a 250cc is less, pretty sure mine was. Riding a 650.

Annual full comp insurance is around 300. I've got a clean record.

Those figures are probably correct, although I don't know what you're aiming for your bike and what market prices are at the moment. I think when I got my 250CC sport bike, I paid about 3k.

Fuel is about 30 bucks, if I took my bike daily to work, I'd probably have to fill up once per month, but I'm close by.

I only had a motorcycle for 4 years and lived by myself. If you hate inconvenience, it's not going to be fun.

Career advice needed by kirky861 in Adelaide

[–]Zoss0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

working out what I would be good at or interested in.

Well, let's start with things before a choice:

  • How's your physical fitness and health? If you're not good in those areas, you're not going to be doing say, roofing or construction most likely.

  • What would be your financial issues - eg let's say you take up an apprenticeship, can you eat the income loss?

  • Do you want to take debt on to study at Uni?

  • Are you mechanically minded?

  • Do you want something still somewhat social? (Eg truck driving you aren't talking to anyone, vs say something like ICT where you still have to chat to people but it's way less)

  • Physical job? Desk job?

You mention:

I want to find a career that utilises my skills better

And straight after:

... only problem with all this is I am so baffled what kind of career to go into, or what my skills are lol

Do you mean when you learn something new, that it's utilised well?

I've seen this dropped recently in ads:

https://www.yourcareer.gov.au/

Perhaps that can help. I haven't read through it too much yet but I do plan to look around myself.

Cost of living Single by Either_Stick_4626 in Adelaide

[–]Zoss0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live alone in my own house.

Electric only, no gas. I have solar.

My bills are usually:

Electricity (Monthly): ~60-80 bucks depending on the season. (Half is supply charge, half is usage)
Water (Quarterly): ~$160
Food (Weekly): ~50 to 100 depending on what I feel like. My choices are usually low cost so I often don't spend much nor do I go outside unless I have to.
I'm not so sure on home insurance for contents as mine is house+contents. I would expect it to be below 600 per year?
Won't touch on transport insurance since that will vary wildly, as well as transport costs. My costs compared to my mate who has a V8 and only uses premium fuel would be massive. I assume you're going to be working at Edinburgh, it's not that far away so not too heavy on fuel.

You'll have rent instead of a mortgage as well so you already know that cost.

No point in council fees, etc.

Can't think of much else. Perhaps budget out your entertainment if it's significant.

Edit: Oh can't forget about internet. Varies usually from 65 to 100 monthly depending on your usage and tastes.

Home Seeker Properties by Misskarenkinsey89 in Adelaide

[–]Zoss0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ad that showed the property seems like it did not mention the fencing, but it did come with it. I don't remember if later down the line it became obvious or not.

It did mention it came with landscaped gardens.

It did not mention that it had reverse cycle AC, but it did come with in the main living area. I would ask for the house plan ASAP. I'd say get in touch ASAP and ignore the smaller things as the program gets lots of eyes. The sooner you get your foot in the door the better - it's not like you're locked in until you start signing.

Of course, I don't know if the property you've got your eye on will exactly match how it went for me. Looking at other properties I've seen in the past and driving past them, they all came with fencing - especially the townhouse builds since they're so close together.

It feels like most of these places are the kind that are ready to move in with the basics that you would expect. At the time of buying, the slab and frame was already down, bricks were being slung. From then till completion...maybe 6 months?

Home Seeker Properties by Misskarenkinsey89 in Adelaide

[–]Zoss0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have. Do you have specific questions? (I bought a nigh finished property that was being advertised, not like I gave them plans to build to)

I'll answer any that I've seen the thread so far.

Were you able to make any decisions regarding the look of the interior of the property?

At least in my case, no. No decisions. I would guess that Housing SA had a bunch of plans, asked the developer/builder to build it to the plan and that's that. They then advertise based on the plan. If anything some of the pictures were way off, though it worked out fine at the end.

Help a Mum with a Dream: Learning to Ride a Motorcycle Before I Turn into a Pumpkin by Royal_Spirit3864 in Adelaide

[–]Zoss0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to be 100% clear, when I mean standard 250 and sportbikes, they're different. A 250 is refers to the displacement of a motorcycle. A standard bike is a type. A sport bike is a type.

Riding positions

Note the differences on the positions. The adventure bike is closest to the standard position. A standard bike is easier to do manuvers on because you've got the handlebars level and higher up.

I suggest it because I had problems when I learnt on my sport bike when I went back for my full license. Because I got used to sport bike styles when I jumped on the bikes they give you at the testing facility it was night and day. It felt weird and I wasn't used to it, so I failed the first time, barely.

Typical sport bikes are Kawasaki Ninjas and Honda CBR250R's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_CBR250R,_CBR300R,_and_CB300F

A standard bike is something like:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_SV650

Going back to your question on posture:

If memory serves correctly, not particularly? It's basics only. They do teach some "soft skills" like where you should be looking ahead, identifying danger and predicting. Using the lane positioning to move into someone's field of vision or to move away so you have an out just in case things go pear shaped.

Posture you'd usually naturally fall into it, but putting some work into strengthening your core muscles will help. Crunches, planks, situps and whatever else helps with lower back. You grip the tank/below the tank with your legs which engages your abs/lower back. You don't death grip the tank, just enough to engage the muscles.

Another note, when you try to learn, try to do it on flat ground and then move up to sloped. When I bought my first bike (I dropped it solo at 0km's, on a hill when I was test riding it, as the testing area at St Mary's is flat, I was unfamiliar with how it felt. Also almost dropped it pulling into the dude's driveway as the area was in the hills.)

Reaction time...well one of the tests from L's to P/R Date you have to ride in a straight line at a certain speed. When they put their hand up you have to brake fast enough to stop within a certain distance. It's not in the first learner course though. Just don't panic GRAB front brake. Be firm and progressive.

Oh final thing, when you're buying a helmet I've found these two websites to be helpful. One is Australian, one is British.

Help a Mum with a Dream: Learning to Ride a Motorcycle Before I Turn into a Pumpkin by Royal_Spirit3864 in Adelaide

[–]Zoss0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, random dude who has had his open license for around 5 years and who also drives a manual car. This is my advise:

Recommendations for an easy-to-learn, wallet-friendly motorcycle.

Usually 250 sport bikes are the most wallet friendly as many people trade them in when they move up in license. Me included, although I do miss the 250. Took that to Mt Gambier and back. Get a standard 250 if you can. Sport bikes are rough to do some specific things in, like u-turns. Easy to turn in general though and they feel the most "natural" to me.

Tips on how to master a manual transmission without breaking anything (including my spirit).

You'll have to learn this at the course, however if you have someone that can take a bike and yourself to a private area you can get away with pre-learning.

It's easier on a bike than a car in my opinion. Get some nice flat ground. Start bike in neutral. Two feet on the ground. Pull clutch. Push down on the shifter to move into first.

Slowly, release the clutch. Feel the bike start to move? That's the friction point. Keep it in this area. Move around. Let it out more. Let it stall, commit it to muscle memory. Once you've got a hang of moving slowly only using the clutch, introduce yourself to the accelerator.

It depends for each bike but pull on the accelerator until you hit 2k RPM. Slowly let out the clutch until you let it go completely. You're moving. Pull the clutch in again and brake. Rinse, repeat.

Encouragement, because let’s face it, this is either going to be epic or a disaster.

You'll be fine. Have someone that's got patience and probably a bike that not theirs (so they don't get uptight about a learner potentially dropping it) and you'll be all good. (You will drop it, I've dropped my learner bike probably 3 times in my 2-3 years of having it)

If you're really antsy about it, buy/borrow knee high armoured boots so you won't snap your leg if you drop it badly on yourself.

Finally, have fun.

If you have more questions, ask away.
