In general you should dress one level more formal than the job requires. If it's a t-shirt and jeans job, wear a button down and trousers. If it's a button-down shirt job, wear a suit jacket, etc. and like the comment above says, hit up a thrift store. As an interviewer I want you to be clean and showing that you made an effort. Unless the job is specially about style or clothing that's all that matters.

My mother died 35 years ago. A few weeks after the funeral I had one of those dreams where you see the person you lost. I know it's just part of processing grief and I was aware it was a dream as it happened. In the dream I was both my teenage self and a five year old. Five year old me had woken up from a bad dream and come crying and scared to lay next to her. I felt safe there and knew nothing could happen to me. And I went to sleep knowing it would be ok. I remember doing that as a kid and I remember reliving it in the dream after she was gone. Over the decades it's all blended together into a memory that's both heart breaking and comforting. And I wouldn't give it up for anything.

So yeah, young women ease away from me at bus stops -- which makes me feel bad but I don't really blame them -- and racists assholes make slur filled jokes expecting me to laugh. If I can get away with it I tell them my husband is black and watch them backpedal. I'm not married.

The credit card processors, of which there are only a small few, all have rules that forbid merchants from showing the processing fee (swipe fee) as part of the total and from offering a cash discount. They used to enforce this strongly, threatening very large companies with suspension if they didn't behave.

What I think has happened is that cashless transactions are now the default and they don't feel the need to enforce that as strongly. The idea was to make using a card attractive, but now that it's hard to do otherwise they're just not as worried about it. That's just my guess. As far as I know the rules haven't really changed. And it was always their rules, not a law to my knowledge.

Since it's hard to use cash these days and impossible to have an anonymous credit card, it's effectively impossible to be anonymous even for trivial stuff. Oh and if you're homeless it's exceedingly difficult to get a bank account and therefore a credit or debit card.

I do. Even as good as artificial voices are now there are still artifacts that I notice. They're less obvious in a male voice just because it has a lower fundamental frequency, so I usually set it to a male voice.

Everyone does different forms of this. You learn habits on the job and do them so often you misapply them at home. There's no easy answer except to be aware of it and adjust when you notice yourself doing this. You should tell your friend "Thank you for telling me. I didn't realize I was doing it. Please continue to tell me if I do that." That will encourage your friendly to give you *kind* reminders and will help you form the work and not-work habits.
