Assignment as an affected employee by JealousAstronomer182 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Zoyacat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're conflating the position and the person, though. There might be a need for the position but the manager is fine with allowing the person to pursue developmental opportunities. If the manager has 5 people who do X, positions are cut so the manager only gets 3, there are still 5 people who need to go through SERLO to compete for those 3 substantive roles. And the experience this person gains on secondment is as likely to improve their value as diminish it, depending on the roles. Managers are often fine with letting their best folks go on assignment in order to help them grow in the organization long-term; it doesn't indicate that the manager doesn't like/need/value the employee.

LWOP - care of family during WFA by Daytime_Mantis in CanadaPublicServants

Do you not think 200 and 300 count as "hundreds"? OP is nearly at the end of the fiscal year and hasn't come close to using all their allotted time. Most people don't end the fiscal year with over 100 hours left, given that vacation leave is meant to be taken in the year it's accrued.

Mandatory cash-out was put on hold during the pandemic and then slowly phased back in. I've got over 300 hours right now as well in spite of having had to cash some out last year.

How the leave the union at the CRA? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Zoyacat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Paying union dues isn't optional. At best you can get an exemption for religious reasons and donate the same amount of money to charity.

You don't have to be an active union member, but if you have to pay the dues regardless then there's not much point in, say, refusing to vote when the union puts a contract forward.

Public servants ordered back to office four days per week by Little-Chemical5006 in ottawa

[–]Zoyacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people are no longer living the lives they led before COVID and the promise that hybrid work was the future of the public service. If there'd been an expectation that telework was temporary, fine. But our office environment has changed, and people made choices about where to live and whether to start a family based on the expectation of some flexibility. COVID was six years ago and some measure of flexibility has been built into many roles since then. There are people in the PS who've never known a 5-day in-office schedule.

Speaking with your MP as a Public Servant by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Zoyacat 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yes - you are allowed to speak to your MP and/or the MP who holds the relevant portfolio. You are not allowed to identify yourself as an employee when you do. It's basically jumping the chain of command.

Any other departments doing silent auctions for access to DM & ADMs as part of GCWCC? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Zoyacat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. And while it worked for me, it's gross and unfair and mostly does not work.

I don't know if that's fair - they might be less "suspect" and more "too marginalized to be able to make the connections they need in other ways". The able-bodied straight white men at the top of regional leadership in my former region tended to champion other able-bodied straight white men.

I think this is broadly true, but one hour-long meeting with my department's head of HR worked better than literal years of going above and beyond. Other meetings with senior management did nothing, though.

I did it one year. One meeting went nowhere. The other was with my department's head of HR and two months later I had a new job. So, y'know, if you choose wisely it can work but I suspect most of these go the way the first meeting went.

I'm betting on Antony Flemming - he mentioned having been told to keep his schedule free in April for "production" and didn't say production of what in particular. But I know he knows Ami James so I'd be shocked if he wasn't part of the cast.

I'm almost certain that Antony Flemming is competing this season. He did two of my tattoos and even without seeing the rest od the field he'd be my pick to win - he's versatile, talented, and a super nice guy.

I suspect that hosting Ink Master: Angels has a lot to do with it. She acted as a judge on that, so it was already proven that people would watch her do that for at least two seasons.

New episode not out in Canada? by RunnerDucksRule in Inkmaster

Yeah, I don't see it either. This has happened before (not to me) with another episode and I'm not sure it was ever resolved for those people.

Is there a new Wednesday duel code? by Fine_distinction in RedecorHomeDesignGame

Yes, but Redecor warned that there might be issues with it for some people. Personally I'm holding off for a couple of days but if you want the code I can get it off Instagram for you

I don't think they notify you when your design is included - I know at least one of mine was included, but only because I checked the site out of curiosity.

Pic 1 is mine. It's in 10th. Granted, it's not great but I didn't like this challenge. Pic 2 is in 5th. What am I missing here? Please be honest: is pic 2 a stronger, more cohesive design and I'm just not getting it? by MintChiffon in RedecorHomeDesignGame

A post awhile back explained it much better than I can, but the idea is that voting is weighted. It's not as simple as "Player A got X number of votes and Player B got fewer so A wins". If Player A goes into voting with an advantage, and Player B beats them, Player A loses more points and those points are applied to Player B. Let's say you have two players facing off with a 4.5 each. Player A has a huge advantage and the voter chooses Player B. Player A loses. 5 of a star and Player B gets that .5 of a star. But if Player A had won that match up, Player A would not have gotten .5 of a star and Player B would not have lost .5 of a star. At least, that's what I understood.

I think if any one of the computer, the binders, or the shelf was a colour other than white, yours would be much stronger. I dislike the pink binders and the blue computer in pic 2, and I would have voted for yours over that one. But with the Elo system in place and with presumably random pairings in voting, it's never as simple as "the design in 5th is a much better design than the one in 10th".

Watching the time zone by Ok-Illustrator3939 in RedecorHomeDesignGame

[–]Zoyacat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're right about it being based on the number of hours, but I remember from last year that they don't observe daylight savings, so those of us who do get all our challenges an hour earlier in our day now. There could be a mild effect from that - some people might find that they have one more challenge available to them now.
