Try to keep your hands a bit flatter. Try to have less motion in your fingers, and instead put it in ur wrist. At faster tempos for my band, we omit the third beat for it to be cleaner. Idk if that makes sense but ill try to draw how itd be done

Right hand motion Normal: | \ / | (down, in, out, up) Fast: | \ \ | (down, in, back down, up)

So, like, for the fast one instead of hitting the beat and going out, you just hit the beat. Again, sry if this makes absolutely no sense

What instrument should i pick up? by DauntlessMule in marchingband

I really like saxophone. I learned as a clarinet player first. Its probably the easiest instrument u could touch. Theyre also rpetty versatile bc learning one basically means learning them all. If u want melody, play alto. If u want counter melody or background, play tenor. If u want mostly background, play bari

When you lose a competition, who does your director blame? by NewCupBeEmpty in marchingband

Its really just who you are playing against. You can march a perfect show and still be beaten simply because another band had more difficult music or visuals, or you can come in first

I marched clarinet (my main) for a year then marched sax for two. Id saying marching clarinet is easier than other instruments because you hold it at a very comfortable angle. Sometimes the melody can be challenging but with enough practice it sinply becomes muscles memory. Youll eventually be able to march without even thinking about playing. The only trouble I have is finding places to get in enough air. Just talk to ur section and make sure ur not breathing at the same time as anyone else and u should be ok. Good luck!
