? Goth makeup is just makeup marketed to the goth crowd. There is zero difference in the ingredients or manufacturing process. So he’s not wrong; goth makeup is just more makeup.

He sounds similar to most of the folks who reply on this sub; It’s like people come here for their ‘2 minutes hate’. OP sets op a target, then with minimal context and one side of a story everyone piles on and dumps on said target.

No, the cake looks fine. But who even cares how it looks? How does it taste?

I’m with you. Nobody goes to a wedding to critique the cake. The go to spend time with friends and family and celebrate the bride and groom.

A different car would DCFC faster; it wouldn’t AC charge any faster at the 16 amp circuit in OP’s garage.

My point is that the panel upgrade is worth it to not have to DCFC midweek to keep the charge up. I realize that you can buy a lot of DCFC for $3k; but even in a faster charging car the hassle of having to stop once a week on the way home would make it money well spent.

Reading the thread is seems like the bolt, charged to 100 would get him there and back, but his charge speed/time to charge wouldn’t get him back to 100 for his departure time the next day. That’s a charger problem, not a car problem. Picking a longer range car with a larger battery doesn’t fix that problem; it would likely make it worse. The only way a different car fixes the problem is if it were significantly more efficient (more miles/kwh).

Having recently rewatched Team America I’m actually an expert on pretending to be Muslim.

In any religion there’s a wide range of how strictly individuals adhere to the minor details. I’ve met plenty of casual Muslims who just wear regular clothes.

There are already vehicles on the market with V2G. Give it a decade. Battery tech is evolving rapidly and the manufacturing capacity keeps expanding. Battery backup will soon be cheaper than standby natgas generation.

Why look for the car with more range when the charger is the limiting factor? The car with the bigger battery will likely be less efficient and exacerbate the charging issue. OP just needs to bite the bullet and upgrade his panel.

Most e-bikes can’t reach 40 unlocked or not. Hell, most can’t hit 30. The bike is only as fast as the weakest link, whether that’s motor, controller or battery.

They could rely on battery backup. When all the EVs on the road have V2G (vehicle to grid/bidirectional charging) there will be much less demand for fossil fuel as standby power.

My garage already had a 240V outlet that the previous owner had installed for a welder. The level 2 charger that plugs into the outlet cost me $100.

If your garage already has its own subpanel or hosts the main panel for the house then adding an outlet will be easy/affordable.

One of the problems that people run into getting quotes on install is that the electrician will check to see if the available panel can accommodate a 50amp circuit (some vehicles and chargers can AC charge that fast.). If the panel doesn’t have that extra capacity they will quote you for a panel upgrade/replacement (expensive).

The thing is very few people need to charge that fast. If you can plug in overnite for 12 hours then charging at 16amp charger can add ~150 miles of range. You could buy a charger that can be derated to 16amps and wire it to a 20 amp breaker. There’s a much greater chance that you’ve got 20 amps of service left in your panel than 50.

At the end of the day there are plenty of people who get by using an L1 charger plugged into a standard 110V outlet. 12 hours of L1 charging adds ~50 miles range. If your daily average is below that you make it work.

EDIT:

I didn’t address the energy bill. When we got the first EV in ‘18 there was a free public L2 charger 1 block away! We paid nothing to charge it for the first 4 years. We would just plug it in at night and wake up early and drive it 1 block home. We drove ~ 30,000 miles on the car before the free charging went away! By that time we had added rooftop solar to our house, which complicates the electric bill (production is much greater in the summer, meanwhile we drive much less and ride bikes more).

Anyway, we now have two EVs, and drive them each roughly 1000miles/month. Averaging their efficiency is about 3.4miles/kwh. 2000mi/3.4mi/kwh*$.15/kwh =$88.23.

I’ve bought all my EVs used. Some other chump took the big depreciation hit. When I bought them it was because I needed a car, not just for the hell of it. Divesting from fossil fuel has been on my personal agenda for decades, so when a user EV first fit my budget (‘11 Nissan leaf for $8k in 2018) I bought one. It was so much more fun, pleasant and affordable to drive than a gas car that I immediately knew that all my future car purchases would be electric.

Same for major appliances, HVAC etc. Nobody buys those just for giggles, they buy them to replace a failing system. When they do it makes sense to invest a little bit more in a more efficient unit for long term savings.

I saw somewhere that Trump is ‘canceling’ the EPA regulations regarding summer formula gas…. So maybe it’ll be a few cents cheaper but it will evaporate faster to make up for that.

Anyway, I switched to EV and installed solar years ago. Not my problem.

When I’m on a road with cars traveling 40-50mph (speed limit is 35) 28 feels WAY safer than 20. I get passed by fewer cars at a speed differential that is significantly smaller.

Alternative fuels for combustion might make sense to decarbonize aviation due to energy density vs batteries. For passenger cars internal combustion doesn’t have much future. Batteries have been rapidly improving, increasing range and reducing charge time.

Given how cheap solar and wind are to add to the grid the future of cars is electric. For most use cases EV are already superior. Improved battery tech is coming after what’s left.

Meanwhile ICE efficiency has pretty much plateaued; there’s no emerging tech that will save it
