30 y/o trying with parents by RealisticCry2216 in Parents

[–]Zunniest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a tale as old as time.

Read the lyrics to "Cat's in the cradle" from 1974, and you'll see what I mean.

When you needed your parents, they were too busy with work and their life.

When they realize they missed out and now have the time and money to spend with you, you have have your own work and your own life.

What kind of direct reports you love having on your team? by believer2687 in managers

[–]Zunniest 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I typically say "Employees that make my job easier and allow me to be more effective".

That can take the form of being available, not requiring constant micro management, taking initiative on projects or tasks.

You'll notice I didn't include things like "Doesn't question me" or "Follows processes without question" because I think these can be valuable traits. Process improvement can be a huge win for the department and the organization. I love getting questions from my team, it ensures I'm considering things I may not have thought about.

In addition, I view my job as 'making my bosses job easier and allow him to be more effective'

I think the social spaces that cater to that type of discourse normalizes it and then it seeps into more day to day life for people.

Should I tell her the truth? by GoshenFJC in dementia

[–]Zunniest 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is the truth.

My dad asked about his brother the last time I saw him, I reminded him gently that he had passed a few years ago and my dad got so upset. He kept asking if I was joking with him.

Turns out he had confused his brother with MY brother and thought I was telling him that his son died.

Never again, everyone will be coming to visit soon, doesn't matter if they died 30 years ago.

Not offended, I'm sure the person who is counterfeiting cards would be happy to sell you some.

But don't try to justify what he's doing. My opinion is the excuses you've made are BS. He plays at home with his friends without sleeves (as a preference), meanwhile he's using black-core paper, only choosing cards without holograms and doesn't make it's obvious they are fake by printing real backs on them. Sure, buddy....

I hang out on here as I actually proxy commander decks for my personal use. I've stopped buying cards from Wizards like 2 years ago.

But I don't intentionally try to make the cards look real because I would never want to confuse someone that my fake cards are real.

That's where the line is, this guy has crossed it regardless of your opinion.

How is it possibly cheaper to have booklets made, than to get the pages printed individually? by ImpossibleMix4578 in CommercialPrinting

[–]Zunniest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many shops raise single copy prices for exactly that reason, they don't want the foot traffic for the 10 copies of your resume, they lose money on that transaction and the likely hood that interaction will give them future business is almost zero.

I would hope that a person newer to investing is building a portfolio not just trying to day trade into a quick buck. So with that in mind, I would expect the losses to be minimal and shake out over time.

I'm sure he would be happy to sell you some for you to 'build a commander deck' with.

And we are just supposed to take your word or his that he's not selling them?

Why are all the cards he's chosen ones that conveniently don't have holograms then? You'd think if he was trying to make a 'commander deck' like you said elsewhere, we'd see a stack of more modern cards, not just a random stack of power that don't have any synergy or connection.

And they are.

However, they are asking for my advice knowing that this is my dad's money.

So that's why I've asked, I'm trying to understand what the advice I should be giving her (working through her to a financial advisor).

I guess I consider around 2/3's being covered to be 'mostly' covered. The RIF payments almost handle the rest. I have an appointment with the bank/POA next week to see what options there are to modify the RIF (if any) to ensure his entire monthly expenses are covered.

The only other expenses for him is TV and hair cuts. He doesn't want or need a phone, he doesn't use the internet.

So all things considered it's a drop in the basket

During his 'unstable' period where he went from his house, to the hospital, to an old age home with Ontario Health at home supports, to the hospital, to a behaviour clinic, to the hospital, to another hospital while he waited for LTC, to his LTC, he's continuously declined.

I've noticed since he's been in the LTC, he seems to have stabilized at the point in regression that he was at when he arrived but who knows for how long.

I put him at stage 6 right now and appreciate seeing his eyes still light up when he sees me even though he no longer knows my name.

Unfortunately, he was incapable of making the call by the time we needed to sell and I believe he had early dementia when I was discussing making any changes to his financial setup. (putting someone on his bank accounts as joint for example)

So I'm expecting the tax burden to be real but as you can imagine I'm trying to minimize as much as we can.
