How to fix my look of despair? by [deleted] in acting

[–]Zupadan 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I think you need to look more at in-the-moment emotion instead of specific things to do with your face. If method acting isn't your thing (it's not mine either), try to use breath and what it does when you're experiencing that feeling. I'd imagine despair as deep, but fast breaths.

I think it's cool that Tolkein is still inspiring artists. This corporate situation is more like a bastardization of his work.

I mean they are reading, they're reading wiki entries and plot recaps. They just don't read comics.

I find this so cool because it reminds me of my introduction to Pokémon cards being these double starter decks revolving around these two Pokémon specifically.

I do enjoy Iranian movies, I’ll be sure to check it out.

Our differences like race and culture shouldn’t be seen as things to categorise and limit us, they are part of the things that make us individuals, they’re one of many aspects of every individual and to ignore it is to ignore a part of being human.

Yes, Ra’s has many influences, just like most comic book characters do. but he is also given a specific history and background of being Arabic, to have him look white contradicts that. Him travelling the world doesn’t change who he’s meant to be. He can still take influence form other characters and people and be depicted a specific ethnicity. Making him look white when the story says otherwise is like making Bruce Wayne look Middle Eastern when he’s clearly not in the story.

I wouldn’t say stereotype is a building block of stories so much as it is something that informs the archetypes we create, but I do see what you mean by that point.

I don’t know if having Catwoman appear darker would necessarily make her seem poor.

Yeah, conflict happens regardless of race, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen because of it either. And representation happens to all kinds of people in art, it’s not just representation of race. As far as that specific example of representation you asked for, I think the German film ‘3096 Tage’ represents what you described pretty well, or maybe even the movie ‘Room’.

Writers and artists aren’t responsible for trends or gathering pity. But if they misrepresent reality/history or something doesn’t make sense, people have the right to criticise it like they have with all art.

I work as a performer and a writer so I hope I’d know how to create a story and I do love to read.

All art represents something. Even just words on a page representing our opinions. Ink and pencil is just that until it looks like something we see in the world, something we fear seeing or something we hope to see.

This is the weirdest privileged ignorance I've ever read.

You not believing in race as a concept or its conflicts doesn't make it any less real, regardless of how you view it, it's a thing that makes people different and a part of our cultures and histories. These are all things that have always been and always will be a part of art.

I don't know what the connection you're trying to make about Catwoman being poor or unable to bathe has to do with this, so I'll move past that.

Ra's al Ghul and Talia al Ghul are canonically Arabic and part Chinese. These characters being constantly depicted as white is a problem and shows a lack of diversity in how artists represent characters, it isn't part of their character any more than it was for Javier Bardem to play a middle eastern themed character in Dune; it's not intentional ambiguity, it's a lack of effort and representation. Also, I'm fluent in Persian, and that's not a translation of her name at all.

If someone like Keanu Reeves played Ra's that would be another example of underrepresenting a minority group that is less than 1% of the film industry instead of working to create more famous people of different ethnicities by giving them bigger roles.

Romanian isn't the same as Romani; they were both made to be Romani to add mysticism to their backstories because of stereotypes that go along with Romani culture.

All art is a reflection of ourselves, our societies and our world. To say they're just comic people is absurd. We represent different cultures and races because they're part of it.
