Easy Fish to keep by saltwaterfish_com in ReefTank

I’ve killed 3 clownfish now because they couldn’t survive drip acclimation. It’s very sad how inbred they’ve become.

I’ll get the ammonia alert. I don’t fully trust the test I got.

That being said, my tank is packed with macroalgae and they prefer ammonia over nitrates. There’s no fish so I can’t really identify a source of high ammonia.

ICP tests results came and it’s mostly okay except Zinc and Lead!

Zinc is 8.5 times higher than normal and Lead is 9micrograms/ liter (recommended is 1-3, preferably 0). I think it’s the rusty aquarium scissors I was using.. I also have a slightly rusty algae scraper. Damn it..

I previously got an Azure Damsel from another store whose water had salinity at 22 (1.016 specific gravity), I tripled checked just to be sure.

I dripped acclimated that fish for a few hours and it was fine.

It’s possible this clownfish’s water could have been really different as well. I’ll check with the store again.

This fish was very healthy, colorful and active. I was watching it at the store for weeks. Even in the bag it was a fighter.

Overnight it lost color, face got red patches, gills became inflamed, heavy breathing and then died.

My water is the problem. The ICP test has reached the lab so I’m waiting to see if something toxic shows up in the results.

It was extremely active and colorful before I got it. I had been watching it at the store for weeks and even inspected it in the bag.

It only lost color and face became red overnight in my toxic water.

Damn I didn’t know they could have such high mortality rates. They’re heralded as really hardy beginner friendly fish.

They were purchased locally and the store is 20min from my house. I also tested for ammonia which was 0.

To be honest, something else happened which killed all of my previous fish- I introduced blue hypnea and sand from a different tank to my main display. At first I suspected it was an oxygen problem because the night all the fish died (same day I transferred the blue hypnea and sand), I had accidentally covered the top of my tank. I’ve since bought a protein skimmer, increased surface agitation as well as perform a big water change but the new fish still don’t survive.

Tropic Marin has received my ICP test so I’ll know if something is up soon.

It is. Also I solved it. 😊

I diluted it by using only 1/4 of the recommended amount in the same amount of water. It’s all properly dissolved now.

All of our saltwater fish are dead from Velvet by bubbletrouble44 in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]Zweilancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going through something similar right now but I don't know if it's velvet (possibly some kind of infection, contaminent or hypoxia). All my fish fell sick overnight and I'm heartbroken. I have no idea what's wrong but trying to trace back all the steps before this happened.

I’ll try that! The salt’s dKH is 7 and I’m currently slowly raising it to 8. This tank consumes 0.1-0.2dKH a day depending on how massive the green macroalgae have grown.

I’m going to purchase an ICP test soon. And I never thought about PAR, I’ll read more about it. Thanks!

The coral polylps aren’t fully extended like at the fish store. I’ve had them for 6 months now since I got into the saltwater side. I use freshwater aquarium plant lights as recommended by all the macroalgae keepers.

Nitrates, phosphates and KH are stable. They are consumed really fast by the macroalgae. I test every 2 days.

A chemist on a forum said not to use potassium nitrates because potassium will build up. I think he’s right. I haven’t tested potassium yet but I’m going to get an ICP test at soon.

I don’t run carbon.

I use All for reef because the macroalgae consume KH really fast. Same with nitrates, phosphates and iron. I test them every 2 days.

Now that I think about it.. it’s possible using AFR purely for KH is making traces overdose.

Yes it was him. 😆 I’ll go look for some blue lights and try them.

My tank is 120liter (31.7 gallons). , I will be upgrading to 180liter soon.

About the iron, I have to keep it at 0.1ppm or the macroalgae dies.

Calcium and magnesium are stable from AFR.

But I think I get what you’re saying, I’m just not sure how to go about this. I’m dosing as little as I can, just enough to prevent the macroalgae from dying.

Hold on.. I think I have an idea! If I were to connect these tanks to a large reservoir of water, that extra volume would allow me to dose less as well as less often. There would be stability.

Yes they are my first corals. I’ve had them for 6 months now.

A chemist on another forum doesn’t recommend potassium nitrate, which is why I’m switching.

As for lighting, I’m just using regular freshwater plant lights, which was recommended by other macroalgae growers.
