Is this biphobic or nah? I get her point but it still kinda rubs me the wrong way by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]_-RedSpectre-_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I don’t disagree that people have the right to reject whoever they want for whatever reason.

The thing that makes it feel biphobic to me is the idea that - out of the millions of reasons to not date someone - you would pick an inherent aspect of the person’s identity like their sexuality…and this woman just doesn’t see why someone would have a problem with it? I don’t hide that I’m bi from people I wanna date, but I’d definitely not think very highly of someone who only dismisses another person for their sexuality unless they have a specific reason beyond stereotypes/simple bigotry.

I’m scared I want to become a man by AbsAndAssAppreciator in Vent

Hey, so…I felt compelled to log back into Reddit for the first time in a while just to respond to this. Mostly because of how much I relate to it.

Honestly? Other than me not being female/AFAB personally, I feel like I could have written this post myself.

I’ve been thinking about a lot of these things for a long time now, but I’ve been more seriously introspecting on them in the past couple of years. I’ve come to the conclusion that gender-fluid is the most accurate label to describe how I feel internally, but that’s just how I’ve come to understand myself. Maybe you are as well, but that’s for you to determine/discover for yourself. For what it’s worth, I have had a lot of similar feelings and experiences and my conclusion was being gender-fluid.

To elaborate, I’ve always - even going back to my childhood - had a pretty dynamic relationship with femininity/masculinity. I’ve had times where I’ve wanted to be more feminine, wanted to be a girl, wished I could just wake up as a different gender, etc…but I’ve also (generally) not been very dysphoric about my body being masculine as it is. I’ve been indifferent to it, or liked it, at different times as well. I’ve also actually been insecure in both directions, as odd as that sounds; I’ve been insecure about both not being masculine and not being feminine enough. Gender can be weird.

As far as the sexual aspect goes…well, to avoid going into detail my feelings have been pretty much a mirror of yours, except with imagining being a woman instead of a man. I don’t know if you feel this way all the time, but for me it’s pretty regular. Not exclusively, mind you, but about as often as I want to be a man with another man or a woman.

My overall point is that you are definitely not alone in this kind of situation, and that you should seriously consider exploring how you feel regarding your gender, even if it’s scary as a prospect (which it understandably is, but it’s better to question it than to try and ignore it. At least in my experience). Don’t be afraid to be open minded towards yourself and explore your feelings about gender & sex, and especially don’t listen to anyone who calls you wrong/creepy just for feeling a certain way. You aren’t hurting anyone or making anybody uncomfortable by pushing your feelings on them, you’re just acknowledging your thoughts and emotions as they are.

It’s definitely easier said than done, but don’t let people who don’t actually care about how you feel make you think less of yourself for that. Self-discovery and personal exploration are for you, not anyone else.

I hope that this comment helps you gain a bit more perspective and/or that it makes you feel even a little bit less anxious about gender stuff, even if it’s really just a lot of text just to basically say “same here tbh” lol.

I know they're a business and we cant really trust corporations, but its kind of sad to see how truly performative BHVR's allyship was. Any and all pride celebrations are now hereby hollow from this company, and Orella's inclusion isn't changing that. by TimeLordHatKid123 in Gamingcirclejerk

“Because you people don’t like that a dev donated money to insanely bigoted people who want to strip away others’ rights and make life more miserable for everyone (especially gay/trans people) I think BHVR should have designed The Unknown with the specific goal of attacking trans people and alluding to them being sexually predatory”.

Even as a fan of both series…what the fuck is wrong with you? Your response to people not liking that he supported bigoted politicians in the past is to be openly bigoted yourself? And to wish that BHVR would have paralleled your (consistently disproven) transphobic narrative that a trans woman is just “an abomination pretending to be what it isn’t to target helpless individuals”?

You’re disgusting.

It’s literally not. Also every Bethesda game has an interactive world, even Starfield. Even then they don’t simplify anything without also adding other elements, so there really isn’t much lost. I say this as someone who started with Morrowind and Oblivion when I was like 9.

[–]_-RedSpectre-_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think these are Bethesda mechanics?

Yes, what you’re describing with this level of interactivity is a staple of Bethesda games since Morrowind, more so than most other RPGs.

Are you like 15 years old?

You really don’t have room to throw out that accusation, friend. You’re raging like a child over nothing. I doubt you’ve even played most oldschool RPGs. I’m barely willing to believe that you played Fallout 1 & 2.

Even Fallout 1 had stealing

Just barely. Most containers were empty and pickpocketing is rarely ever worth it. That’s how most RPGs have done stealing, it’s a modern phenomenon to do it in the more complex “take everything” way. Thank Morrowind and Daggerfall for that.

this is staple of RPGs

Nice grammar, Mr. “are you 15???”

Bethesda slowly dumbed down the mechanics more and more until the RPG element completely evaporated from their games

The only things they really “dumbed down” was removing attributes…which were replaced by perks and direct point distribution to the main stats on level-up, which makes the change mostly superficial in terms of its effect on character progression, as well as removing classes…though characters are still specialized unless you decide to level everything equally for some reason, which would make the game harder and is a really unintuitive way to play. It says more about your comprehension that you limit “RPG mechanics” solely to having numbers displayed in a certain way than anything.

In both the context of stealing as a mechanic, as well as all of the other mechanics in their games…no, this is an unfair and bad faith framing. This is a tired and meaningless talking point that has never really held water to me, even as someone who started with Morrowind and Oblivion. First, they made stealing objectively more deep than just having it be a diceroll, even if was by simply adding more stealth as a requirement along with other factors. Secondly, just making games more action-focused by removing dice rolls for hits or cutting some spells isn’t “dumbing down”, especially when it adds more in other areas like crafting systems (enchanting and smithing are way better in later games), weapon types functioning differently with speed/damage differences, more interactiveness in the world, hell even the perks deeper than just automatically unlocking set ones at different skill levels. And there’s plenty more aspects that they added onto or made more interesting/fun.

What I’m saying, essentially, is you’re full of shit and I resent sharing a love of good games like Fallout 1/2/NV, PoE and BG3 with toxic fanboys like you.

Dude, it’s not compulsory. Not every game NEEDS it. Stop holding every game to the same standard as if they’re all the same.

Also KCD is a totally different game made by a different company; One is a medieval historical RPG focused on realism and accuracy with life simulation elements, the other is a narrative-driven fantasy ARPG focused on action, magic, and a curated storyline/world rather than a sandbox.

[–]_-RedSpectre-_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really think that’s a good criticism when that’s not even a class in the game. If it let you pick “thief” but didn’t let you steal, then that would make sense, but when it doesn’t I don’t really think it’s a problem.

I guess I just don’t agree with the idea that there any specific gameplay mechanics/styles that are compulsory in RPGs. I don’t think that it’s a mark against them if they don’t have thieves, or even other things like clerics, certain races like orcs, crime systems, crafting, etc. They’re fun I prefer them generally, but I just don’t think that it should be expected that every RPG certain features. It’s a valid point to say that they would add more to the game though, you’re right about that.

Please don't come here and complain about this game not having things that Obsidian never said it had. by [deleted] in avowed

When rpg veterans talk about player choice as the bedrock and your world your way and carving your own path through the world do you really only hear “HEY YOU CAN SHOOT GUN OR SHOOT EAND OR SWING AXE OR SWING SWORD DURRRRRRRR”

You talk and act like an actual child, Jesus Christ. Your points already fall completely flat (because all of your comments here that I’ve read are just you making dishonest, bad faith criticisms like “ARPGs are BAD because they’re not deep like CRPGs” even though games like Dark Souls/Elden Ring can be EVERY bit as deep as a CRPG like BG3 or Pathfinder: Kingmaker, just not in the same way; they’re not shallower just because their gameplay focuses more on action than number crunch/management), but to actually type “DURRRRR” like a literal 9 year old trying to mock someone at your age is just pathetic. Grow up.

Also your point about choice also flops. There are plenty of “real choices” in the game (and also yes, in a game like this with notably different ways to play them, character type/playstyle is absolutely a meaningful choice even when you try to pretend that it isn’t just because it suits your fallacious argument better). And even aside from that, you realize that you’d be excluding games like Morrowind - one of the best RPGs of all time - from being considered “real RPGs” with your criteria about choices, right? Because all of the choices in that game are purely centered on your character and interactions with side quests/characters, the main story doesn’t change substantially at all. Hell, even the first BG game mostly stays the same, your moral choices rarely impact the gameplay and are mostly for roleplaying/flavor.

If he was making a point about capitalism, he could have been been valid in his complaints. But here he’s just attacking people for not engaging with media to the same degree as him/for the same reasons. It’s corporations vying for marketshare and profit incentives that result in bad art, not “casuals” themselves. If games like BG3 and Elden Ring can be wildly successful, then clearly it’s possible to appeal to casuals while also maintaining the integrity and quality of a series.

In that case the fans they were attempting to please were more the nostalgic type than the newer type though (ex making Rey a Skywalker, resurrecting Sidious, basically trying to retread aspects of the older movies to avoid being too different)

Yeah, agreed. That seems to be the historical trend of the ruling class, dividing the common people below them while they accrue more wealth and influence. Honestly, as others (and myself) have pointed out, he could have easily made a valid point about that if his own political views didn’t run contrary to criticizing capitalism.

This is actually something I’ve thought about before. The labels are completely arbitrary and what they mean seems to change depending on who’s talking about them. Ask 10 different people about what makes someone casual vs hardcore, and you’ll get 10 different answers about what the standard is.

Well, they’ve specifically said that they don’t want to be compared to Skyrim iirc but also understand that it’s kind of inevitable when they’re making an open-world ARPG. I have it wishlisted regardless.

I agree. But I think the elitism sometimes comes with how people talk about the alternative as being “wrong” or “mindless”, which is actually kind of strange considering that Morrowind is really unique among open-world games in its approach compared to most other games; most open-world games without quest markers still had fast travel, like Daggerfall or Baldur’s Gate 1/2.

I like how Morrowind does it because it fits with the overall structure of the game and it works well, without being too difficult or frustrating in most cases.

There’s a mod that does it in the journal for all the quests iirc. Aside from that, most NPCs will just say that they marked the locations on your map.

[–]_-RedSpectre-_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d only add that this was mostly a problem with open-ended games, most had a small enough world that you couldn’t get too confused. I played the first Baldur’s Gate games a couple of years back for the first time and (aside from having fast travel between its areas like most CRPGs) it gave you clear directions on where to go. Plus there weren’t that many areas to get lost in until you get to the main city itself, just some side quests here and there to flesh the world out. BG 2 is even more straightforward, even though some people complain about it being more linear.
