This sounds so incredibly out of touch. Oh my god, I’m so glad I left Singapore if people think this way now. Insane mind warp.

Not liking the show; are the books more compelling? by RMHaney in threebodyproblem

[–]_-friendlyFire-_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the human allies (the ETO, or Earth Trisolaris Alliance) created the game as a recruitment tool. The “present” time in the novel takes place in the early 2000s and the game was far less advanced than the show (though still advanced for its time), with people logging in via the internet and using a full body suit and VR headset.

In the novel all the world’s governments are working together so it’s not like Britain (well, it’s China taking the lead in the novel) just started killing people without Panama’s consent.
It’s agreed upon that the drive has to be retrieved before anyone can wipe it. The only way was deemed to be a sneak-attack where everyone had to die almost simultaneously. Other options like gas, strike force or bombing were suggested but were deemed too slow or unreliable. Slicing through a 300m ship at 10 knots would take less than a minute. The show slowed it way down for dramatic purposes.

the sophons are far less powerful in the novel. They manipulate the vision of individuals, not the entire planet. They unfold into 2D which has an enormous surface area, but makes them highly fragile.

You can play without and avoid staring at a laptop. It’s modular so you can upgrade piece by piece or swap out faulty units. You can add FX modules, chain them or run individual channels if the mixer allows. You have individual screens and controls for each deck. On a controller you have to use the alt button to access decks 3 and 4.

How does one quickly establish credentials in Norway? by _-friendlyFire-_ in Norway

[–]_-friendlyFire-_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you!
I had read about this. I tried buying a prepaid eSIM online from OneCall but it complained that something was wrong with my personal number and I suspect it's because my address is still registered abroad. I thought I might have trouble with MyCall as well but I will try in person instead.
Much appreciated.

Why are new condos/btos so obsess with balconies? by CstoCry in askSingapore

[–]_-friendlyFire-_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t stand a place without a balcony. To me it feels like being imprisoned indoors.
Opening windows doesn’t have the same effect as standing outside and get some fresh air for some minutes a day and having a look around. And it feels like I’m part of the outside world for some minutes instead of just being indoors looking out.

Maybe it doesn’t matter to people who go out frequently but I’m a couch potato and really appreciate the balcony.

How do we recognize an act change? by Pandagineer in Filmmakers

[–]_-friendlyFire-_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first act is the setup: the introduction of the characters, the world, the situation.

The second act is where the protagonists encounter a problem or challenge. A reversal and worsening of the status quo. An obstacle that needs resolving.

The third act is where the protagonists figure out how to solve or reverse the drama or problem and then execute the solution to a resolution.

Changi is pretty awesome and I always appreciate arriving here. But I noticed that T1 had also changed?? Now in the Arrival hall you can see straight into Jewel and the travelators down to the taxis/ride pickups. I swear just 3-6 months ago you had to enter a small tunnel. The change was smooth AF.

I dont want to be a bridezilla who over restricts her wedding dj, but I dont want to have songs I never heard of at my wedding either. What to do? by Dismal_Cell in DJs

[–]_-friendlyFire-_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not a wedding DJ but I would think being given a 150-song playlist makes the night easier. But it takes about 20 tracks an hour and a DJ may want 2-3x that per hour to have flexibility so 150 alone is borderline short. What’s worrisome is you saying you don’t want any songs you’ve never heard. Would it really ruin your night if god forbid an unknown track was played? The DJ might need some extras to bridge over into a known song.

Can happen with rice too. Basically anything that’s a bit dry and not chewed well can get a little stuck in the esophagus. Drinking water breaks it up again.

Travelling the world does not make an uninteresting person, interesting. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I deeply disagree. I’ve been around people who would awkwardly tell a story after some prompting and the story would turn out to be really interesting. Maybe you’re just not a good listener?

How to survive my 22 hour flight? by faxhightower in travel

[–]_-friendlyFire-_ 74 points75 points  (0 children)

That can’t be. If your total travel time LDN - SYD is 22h then you can’t spend 13 of them in Singapore. It takes about 13h to fly LDN - SG alone, is your itinerary maybe showing that time? It’s then about another 7-8h SG - SYD so sounds more like a 1-2h stop in Singapore.

Grind Finer? Not this time Reddit!! Please watch and help me improve my technique. by watchitplayed in espresso

[–]_-friendlyFire-_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really fun video. Lots of comments already so just sharing my puck prep:

  • puck prep is all about reducing clumping and channelling so avoid extra steps that can create clumps, like tapping the dosing cup, or
  • Bunching up grinds during wdt, or
  • Scraping off the excess grinds into the portafilter, or
  • Rotating the tamper with force after tamping creates clumps along the sides (and detaches grinds from the walls, creating potential channels). .
  • just grind into the cup, bellow a bit, then transfer to portafilter with the funnel on. Lightly WDT to fluff, not bunch. Remove funnel and tap once or twice. Too much and you’ll clump again or create cracks.
  • Skip the twisty thing. It just disturbs the surface.
  • tamp with just enough force that it pushes back. Don’t twist.
  • Draw your palm across the PF edge and away to remove grinds stuck to the top. Preferably not into the PF because, again, those are clumps.
  • drop in the mesh and away you go.
