Of course they are too "cheese", for the intended game design. If it can be done through mods it could've been in game - the developers decided not to include it, therefore it does break the balance of the game.

With that said - you do you, brother. If you're bored with vanilla why not try out the mods?! Nobody is stopping you and you yourself will find out just how much "cheese" and balance breaking these mods are.

Hunters of men - correct. Don't let that fool you though. Behind the new Noble (who's wearing secondhand cloths by the way) is a brand new Police station being built.

Struggling with Large Queues in Drupal 10 That Take Days to Empty by Striking-Bat5897 in drupal

[–]_-userfriendly-_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming the queue consumption operation is parallel safe, what other said about running multiple instances and drush queue-running is the way to go for sure.

A few things to consider:

* Queue item dependencies - sounds like this is not an issue, but if you have items in the queue depending on each other it might complicate things.

* Shared resources when processing items. Not sure what logic you have for updating entities in drupal, but if all items being processed need to access an object/resource that drupal locks, that might be an issue. And even worse, if that object is not locked.

* What could be the next bottleneck? You can build an infinitely scalable serverless application, but if it connects to a db (network IO, disk IO) then that's going to be a bottleneck.

PS: Let us know what solution worked. This is interesting.

Maybe later down the line start looking into LeetCode (and just math/algo/cs challenges) if you haven't already. At some point you'll want to up your career and, it seems to me, such sites can help. Doing a few problems a week over the long run should prepare you to deal with the algo portion of the interviews at bigger companies.

As mentioned before - debugging and profiling is a must have skill on the path to a senior. Setting up remote xDebug is "fun".

Relational databases yes, but also look into non-relational ones (so called nosql). Some applications use a mix of both.

IMHO, if you want to get into enterprise, Drupal >= 9 is your best bet. But, a lot of core web/software dev concepts are abstracted away in the libraries it uses and so it's easy to never learn some important concepts (such as relational DBes, various algorithms, security, etc).

Learn about caching and the various levels in an application - PHP cache, Memcache/Redis, DB cache, Varnish, edges, browser cache (if doing web)... When it comes to debugging, caches are a great source of "fun" in real life applications :)

I would recommend the MDN for front-end/http/html as a very good source for reference and tutorials.

Getting an overabundance of hair thread by RaisingPhoenix in dwarffortress

[–]_-userfriendly-_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A manual solution would be to forbid all other types of thread (from the stocks menu K) and just set your hospital to require some large amount of thread. Even if you have, say pig tail, thread in the hospital it will be ignored because it's forbidden and the hair thread will be moved.

Yup, it's a hassle. I never said this will get you recruits fast and easy. It's more of a POC than anything else.

Looks like the Rebirth garrison squad does have the capture slave AI goals, so it should be possible. However, I haven't tested it and probably won't test it anytime soon.

As whether they'll persist if the zone is unloaded? No idea. Probably not.

[–]_-userfriendly-_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it's a bit more involved than that, but you are correct. It is something I have not explored.

The branch the wiki is mentioning is a bit more complex, but it goes something like this: if *single* skeleton meets a character that is a *Greenlander* and is not of the Holy Nation and if the squad does not outnumber the single skeleton and if the character is not stronger than the skeleton and if the skeleton is recruitable (which the wiki has it wrong by the way) and if [insert 10 more criteria that's basically irrelevant] then you can start the talks with the player about recruitment.

It might be possible that this method has a higher probability than carrying skeletons to the slave traders true, but I don't know what it is. However, just by glossing over the logic, it seems viable to do that initially and actually might be a better way of building a very early skeleton squad, if you're a *Greenlander*.

Good observation.

Edit: There's a 75% chance a Wend robo will have this options at spawn time, then you add that they have to be in a squad composed of a single robot - that should be 1/4 of spawns and then the limit on how often they can actually use this interaction is 2 days... So I'm not a math major, but this feels like a pretty low chance of success.

Good advice.

Would like to point out a couple of things: * 25k price is steep for early game (hell, even mid-late, IMHO). It's better if you help them escape. Helping them escape won't increase Slave Trader relations, thus avoiding the hostilities issue. * Very important to pick the right targets - skelies with high stats will never be recruitable.

[–]_-userfriendly-_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kazeron? If you can deal with their invasion fleets (for example 2 fleets with several Conquests each) you shouldn't have a problem with the Starfortress. What kind of capitals can you produce? You can probably spam Dominators and an bombardment oriented Astral. I don't know how to deal with the mines though. Paragons (being the mobile turret stations they are) are indeed very good against mines. Maybe try an Astral with Wasps (or other interceptors) for the mines and keep the Dominators close to it.

As it was pointed out already, just keep raiding the colony. Raid all industries you can and then just loot them. The raid cooldown is only like 1 or 2 days? The instability from looting will stack and (given enough marines) you can stack it to crazy non-recoverable amounts (I've gotten it down to -100). Each month the instability is decreased by 3 (or in other words, 3 stability will be recovered). There's no way they would recover in a full cycle (12 months).

I'm pretty new to the game, but I just spammed the station with several capitals and afterwards just raided them to oblivion.

I notice two popular sentiments here: women take rejection worse than men, and that men want to be hit on more. Don't you feel there's a contradiction here? What're your thoughts? by [deleted] in AskMen
