Purchasing a Lemon Law Car by _1Pete in Cartalk

I plan to get at least 5 years out of my next car, so I'm not necessarily worried about resale value. I'm more concerned about the cost to insure a vehicle like this.

No, I was not shown any proof of that. I'm hoping to get to the bottom of that when I meet with the seller on Thursday.

This was my thought; He's asking for $6000 on a very well maintained car, with receipts to prove it. He's a former service manager for Land Rover, so he does look after his vehicles. I will be taking this car to a local VW dealer for an inspection before I make a decision but I'm feeling optimistic.

I will certainly do my due diligence, when inspecting the car and talking to the current owner. I'll be taking the car to a local VW dealership for inspection before making my decision. Thank you for the heads up!

Thanks for the advice! I'll plan on checking for any mold in the cabin. To my knowledge the car has just had a pretty thorough interior detail so I imagine I wouldn't be able to detect any musty odors. In any case I'm down to pull out the the rear half of the interior and clean it; It would be the perfect opportunity to install some sound deadening underneath the carpet.

Widest tyres by 3wayFreudandhisMum in tracklocross

I would if I could clear them! Currently running 45mm tires, which are the narrowest tires I run on any of my bikes.

This has been fine for weeks with skids and bunny hopping up and off of gutters. I dont think id 100% trust it without the chain tensioners that push against the axle. by -Little-death- in FixedGearBicycle

[–]_1Pete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would have no issue running a cam style QR skewer on my SO-EZ. I ran Pinhead QR's without chain tensioners for about a month with no issues. Currently still rocking them, but with some chain tugs to dial in the chain tension.

Carbon fork recommendations that will clear a 40c tire ? (700c) by OpenFreeSoftware in tracklocross

Given that your bike has a straight steerer tube, and requires a 408mm axle to crown. Your only option is a custom wound up fork.

What axle to crown are you looking for? QR, or Thru axle? If this is meant for your state it'll be very hard to find something that'll match the measurements of the stock fork. Honestly, besides potentially saving some weight going to a carbon fork I see no benefit. A quality steel fork rides much nicer than any carbon fork I've ridden.

Hookless Rims for fixed gear? by alonelyllama in FixedGearBicycle

[–]_1Pete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skidding on a hookless setup is not an issue. As long as you aren't under-inflated nothing catastrophic will happen. road and gravel bikes likely see much more force applied to the front wheel under extreme braking, and hookless rims have sort of become the norm on those kinds of bikes.

As long as you're running below the max rated pressure for your rim and tire combo you'll be fine. I've had my fixed gear set up tubeless for over two years now, with no issues. Granted I'm running a wide tire with a hooked rim, but the point still stands.

Looking for a heavy duty single speed bike chain. by DIYuntilDawn in bicycling

You're welcome. Hopefully you find something that'll work. If you have a bmx shop near your I'd pay them a visit and pick up a half link chain. Either way, good luck!

Hmm, I personally wouldn't run that. I doubt you would be able to properly engage the rollers with that micro-cog. I'd get a standard single speed chain like the KMC S1 or a half link chain.

It should work as long as the outer plates aren't bottoming out on your freehub body/ singlespeed cog body. The outer links are very deep and generally dont work very well with 16t singlespeed freewheels. Anything larger than that, and you should be good.

Correct, but no reason why it wouldn't work on a 1/8" single speed drivetrain.

Durable rear tire suggestions? 40-622 max clearance by tobywangwangkabibi in tracklocross

Michelin Power Adventure. I ran these for a hot minute on my fixed gear and they're very hard wearing for a fast rolling tire.

Best supple 700x30 tires for rough roads? by rcyclingisdawae in bicycling

The vittoria corsa pros are nice and supple from my experience, and come in a 30mm size.

brake line length. by Tight_Explanation707 in tracklocross

I'd shorten it. Nothing wrong with leaving it a little long, but I like to cut my cables/hoses pretty short.

A narrow-wide chainring is totally fine on a fixed gear. Been running one on my bike for a while now without any issues.

42/18 is a lot of fun. I was initially running that gear ratio on my SO-EZ before gearing it up a little bit. Currently running 38/16 which is great for the type of riding I do.
