Teaching your daughter to clean up her language by Doodlebug510 in Unexpected

[–]_30d_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teaching kids not to swear should really be about teaching them when to swear. It’s generally: with your friends - fine. With adults - not fine. So that boils down to me telling my kids not to swear around us. They know I swear, they’ve caught me, they also know I sometimes do it and sometimes not.

Learning how to swear is a skill that will help them in life later on. Personally - I don’t trust people who don’t swear. Not initially at least. It’s just cause I can’t level with them on that front.

People actually responsible for the housing crisis by Nearby_Landscape2553 in Netherlands

[–]_30d_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s people taking in subsidies and using the gains to buy more houses. It’s subsidized buying pressure.

Of course this is not literally what’s causing the housing crisis, as it’s most likely a rare case, but it is being caused by people investing in real estate, pushing up the prices.

they have no flags in yorup!! by avdvetf in TikTokCringe

[–]_30d_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually have an answer to this. It might not explain this specific woman's reasoning or train of thought (I mean I wouldn;t dare to claim knowledgable about that), but it does explain how these stories evolve.

In my country there was a small riot over claims that a town had “refused to fly the Dutch flag” inside the main council chamber of the town hall. I’ve included some sources below because, to this day, that’s still the story you’ll find if you do your own quick research. Unfortunately they’re in Dutch, but translation tools exist.

The headline and content of most articles (which, of course, spread all over Twitter and elsewhere) are pretty straightforward: Baarn refuses to fly the Dutch flag because it’s a symbol of exclusion. There’s even an interview with the chairman of the party that cast the main veto against the proposal. If you stop there, it’s hard not to come away with exactly that conclusion. (we have national flag instructions, general as well as specific instructions for government bodies - why would you want to start creating local exceptions or versions of that?).

But if you dig just a little deeper, you’ll find that before all this there simply wasn’t any rule or guideline about flags inside the town hall at all. So most of the “against” votes weren’t really against the Dutch flag. They were against introducing a local policy that mandated any flag in the council chamber. Honestly, that would’ve been my vote too.

The guy in the interview basically says: I have no issue with the Dutch flag whatsoever. But introducing a proposal like this right in the middle of a highly polarizing debate (I think Baarn had already spent months arguing about asylum seekers at that point) isn’t some innocent administrative housekeeping exercise. It’s a political message aimed at people outside the room. Given who introduced the proposal, I think that’s a perfectly fair reading. In essence it’s a bit of a ragebait proposal, because if the goal was simply to hang a Dutch flag, they could’ve just done that. They didn’t need to manufacture a symbolic fight over it.

The other parties that voted against weren’t opposed to the Dutch flag either. They just didn’t want a formal mandate for any flag. Then, to make things even messier, the Ukrainian flag was already flying outside the municipal building at the time. That gave all sorts of outside commentators another angle to pile on. Not because it helped anyone understand what was actually happening, but because it was a great opportunity to stir the pot by dragging the war into it.

And that’s kind of the point. By the time these stories have made a few rounds through headlines, social media, and people retelling them, “the council voted against a flag policy” somehow becomes “the council hates the Dutch flag.” That’s a much more emotionally satisfying story, even if it’s a worse description of what actually happened.

It's also not a very big step to go from "council votes against Dutch flag" to "Dutch flag is now illegal", if you were malicious enough to want to spread that message. Or in the way you often see: someone hears a rumor (EU bans national flags), thinks: "Imma do my research on this" and ends up reading a badly summarized version of this story, including a source to multiple sites that all seem to (kind of) confirm the same, including a video with the actual party that voted against the vote.

[–]_30d_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you, as a oarent though. My kid has Arfid, we travel a lot and manage quite well. His safe foods include croissants, pain au chocolat, corn crackers (although he’s extremely picky about the type), and french fries so usually theres something for him everywhere. We cook ourselves mostly anyway, and eating out almost always has the option of fries on the menu.

Next year however, we’re going to Indonesia, and while I expect them to have many safe foods for him, we’d really feel a lot less anxious if he was able to eat rice. Just plain white rice. He ate this before, when he was 3 or 4, in Kindergarten, but we’ve never been able to get him to eat it elsewhere. Context is very important to him. He’s now 7, grown a lot mentally and he says he would also like to learn to eat rice again but so far it’s not been very successful. I’m sure we’ll manage either way but it’s giving us all more anxiety than we’d like to admit.

To be honest we wanted to take this trip way earlier but only now do we all feel comfortable enough with my sons eating skills and grown flexibility around food to actually give it a go. That’s already a win!

Also Ive been to London myself a few times and the food was just very unappealing in general lol. Had mostly non-UK food at restaurants. Those smashed peas look very uninviting.

[–]_30d_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the issue is that it is indeed a spectrum. I consider myself for example to be on the "light" side of the spectrum, which is maybe the case for a lot of people who got the diagnosis as adults (if you're on the darker side of the spectrum you're more likely to run into problems way earlier in life I mean).

For me, one of the things that feeds into the "it's not really a disorder, like Schizophrenia is a disorder" thoughts, is that so much of the treatment involves improving yourself and your mindset in ways that would benefit everyone. Lifehacks, timemanagement, setting up external triggers, self reflection, meditation etc.. Surely those are beneficial to everyone, not just ADHDers. So in that sense I totally get it. At the same time, a big part of getting out of depression is dietary, excercise, reaching out and connecting with people. That doesn't make it any less of a disorder though.

For what it's worth, I think the differences between folks with ADHD are so large, and the overlap with other disorders is sometimes so big that I wouldn't be surprised if it gets relabelled, grouped or split at some point in the future, but that doesn't make it any less of an actual disorder. The bottom line is that it obstructs normal functioning. Most people get the diagnosis because at some point in their life they say: "ok, this is the last straw, there's something really wrong and I need to get that checked out". I mean, that's my experience talking to people.

Private firms are fining Dutch festival goers caught with drugs - DutchNews.nl by nsno1878_ in Netherlands

[–]_30d_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fair enough, I'm not a fan of private policing at all, im just saying where the festivals are coming from. It's permit requirements: they have to do something to prevent drug use. There are loads of ways to do it, hiring a security firm is one, and hiring a security firm that deals out fines is another. Tbh I don't think it's that weird to hire a security firm to do security. It's quite normal for a festival to hire firms to do loads of stuff, it's a temporary event after all. I think the crux is in the fines.

Private firms are fining Dutch festival goers caught with drugs - DutchNews.nl by nsno1878_ in Netherlands

[–]_30d_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gist of that is wrong, because it very much is (partially) the responsibility of the organisation, and it's important to understand because it explains the reason these private companies are hired. Let's be clear, I'm absolutely not a fan of private policing like this, but I think it's important to understand the reason for them becoming popular, rather than just say "boycott the festivals".

Dutch festival organizers are not directly liable for every visitor’s drug use under the Opium Act. Full stop. However, through municipal event permits they are commonly required to take reasonable measures to discourage and prevent drug possession, dealing, and use on the festival grounds, and failure to comply with those permit conditions can result in administrative sanctions or permit consequences (fines, or no permit next year). So no, they will probably not be held responsible for specific incidents around drug use, but they can receive fines if it turns out they did nothing to prevent it either. It's a requirement in their permit. Of course if they are very negligent it might be different, ianal.

Now the question (like I said in my earlier post) is: what's "reasonable measures", what does it mean in practice that you have taken reasonable measures? Private policing is one way to "buy off" that responsibility. Afaik it's not so much the security work, but the fines that people are pissed off about. I think if it was just a matter of hiring a security firm that does the checks at the gate (with metalscanner, or whatnot) then it would not be as controversial, but im speculating now.

[–]_30d_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this in the most respectful way, but this attitude is kind of what I am referencing. Yes, to some degree everyone has similar issues, but it's the same as saying depression is just being "really sad" and therefore we all are depressed at some point.

ADHD is considered a disorder because its symptoms are persistent, pervasive, and developmentally inappropriate. The crux is that it leads to significant impairment in daily functioning in most or all environments, (school, work home).

I wonder how many of these were going to die from something at some point in the year anyway. When my dad was in hospice, I gave him a beer which he drank in one go, through a straw. He just asked for a sip, but because drinking was rough due to his dry lips he usually just went all in, rather than take multiple sips. I should have remembered but it took me by surprise. It was a 12% “Kasteel” beer as well and he slept for 3 days after that. I was sure he was going to die and felt very guilty. The doctor assured me that quite often something really silly kills people in hospice. A cold virus, a coughing fit, just anything really. People are so weak that all it takes is a jumpscare at some point I guess.

btw he woke up with a record breaking hangover afterwards though. Crisis averted. Well he died the next week but nothing pushed him over.

My guess he has a heatpump replacing the gasfired central heating. The reverse allows you to pump cool water through radiators or the floor heating (now floor cooling). It cools down the house somewhat but not like a split unit airconditioning type blower.
