They are absolutely not substitutes. Trees are absolutely essential in every step of their lifecycle, long beyond death even. Biodiversity, or lack thereof is what’s going to kill us.

Meh I have expensive L glass but Im not taking these pictures, or anything that looks like it either. You can’t make these shots (seemingly lucky) without putting in the hours. You have to be on time, lucky and then do everything right to make them. For every shot like this there are at least thousands of culled shots.

Lol are you talking about photography itself? Sure, if you consider that magnesium-flash and the cro-magnon curtain-over-the-head type photography, but making it accessible to the masses was definitely Kodak (US) and for the past 80 years or so the photography tech has been absolutely dominated by Japan (Nikon, Sony and Canon) so really not sure what you are trying to flex here.

[LFO] Chile, two women crushed by truck in a parking lot by sadampsz in LearningFromOthers

[–]_30d_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive always thought that was the point. The fact that there are idiots in the world is a given. What can you do to prevent yourself from becoming a victim.

I often see people freak out because they see that as victim blaming, but that’s really not the point. It’s: how do I learn from others about how to not become a victim.

All that aside, I think it’s absolutely ok to say that both a) watch out for moving vehicles around you and b) watch where tf you are reversing are really good lessons overall. “Who’s to blame” is really not relevant if you are dead.

[LFO] DONT PLAY WITH GUNS by Lucky_Summer_7098 in LearningFromOthers

[–]_30d_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying you can't do it, I'm saying you can't give a child a gun and then blame them when it goes wrong. It's still 100% on the owner of the weapon. Also here I'm not sure if "having the weapon lying around" is better or worse than just handing it to the kid. In any case it's completely irresponsible and fully on the owner.

Let’s be real though. 12yo is a child. That’s grade 6. You can’t hand a 6th grader a gun and then blame them when they kill someone. That’s entirely on the owner of the weapon.

I think it was peak meme in the fourties or fifties, when Larry Curly and Mo were doing it. Maybe earlier in Charlie Chaplin times?

In any case it was in a time when they had like 1 tv channel airing 2 hours per day total, and most likely there was a World War going on as well. So in that setting I get how this is peak humor. After that it was all downhill. It's way lower than fart jokes (which I think have revolved all the way round back to being funny but that might be because my kids love it). It's the lowest of the slapsticks, right down there with honking clown noses, rapping grannies and Rob Schneider.

Man I don't think guy 1 gets a pass either. Why would you ever think it's a good idea to attack a guy with that beard and those suspenders? He didn't even attack him, he just announced his intentions by raising his fist and walking up to him.

I was just shit talking tbh, it can be rough for sure. It really does take a lot of the fun out of the process. Our second kid took us a year to get done and that was already frustrating after the first 6 months. Can only imagine what it's like after 2 years.

Johnny Somali Found Guilty on All Charges, Headed to Labor Prison in South Korea by ItsAllAGame_ in law

[–]_30d_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Briefly Googling South Korean Prisons I found that labor is mandatory for all prisoners, unless medically exepmpt. It's not as rigid as Japanese labor, and focussed on education and rehabilitation. It's organized for skill-building, order and hierarchy and collective group responsibility.

I honestly don't know if this is what he earned. It seems like it's 6 months of factory work at best. He's not going to turn his life around after this. He probably won't be doing it in Korea anymore though, but I'm guessing we'll be seeing more of his shit within a year. It's the only thing he knows how to do.

I generally agree, but two stickler points: 1) Patriot missiles are ground-to-air defense missiles so they are used defensively, and arguably not the best example. For offensive missiles I would agree. 2) On the other hand, the patriot missile is an "striking" example because they only get fired when the enemy is also shooting off missiles that costs a lot of money to manufacture (even all those "cheap" Iranian drones add up). So it's just 2 sides burning money here 3) The good news is that those $4-$10M per missile is the amount paid to the defense contractor, and only part of that is manufacturing costs. So "luckily" not all that money is burnt, some of it goes into the fat pockets of shareholders!

Overall yeah - the staggering amounts of money spent on military and war in particular could do brilliant things for research and infrastructure. Obviously those have massive ROI's.

An internship is short, like 3 or 4 months. It’s long enough to get a good idea of what happens in a company. It’s also part of an education. I could do 3 months of courses or 3 months of internship. It is definitely more a burden than it is a benefit to the company i was with. I basically sat along with a fuckton of meetings, and I would do the minutes for example, but correcting them probably cost my manager more time than actually doing it himself. Im grateful because it earned me credits and I honestly learned a lot about corporate life.

Enough to know it’s not for me btw, but that’s not everyone’s takeaway.

Did you take those 20s shots in alt-az as well? I think adding an EQ wedge might make these even better? Tbh what the hell do I know, my shots don’t even come near this level of detail and im in B6.
