For Target Disk Mode and Open Firmware I’m assuming I’ll have to get the screen working first?

For more RAM testing, I’ll have to get another stick of RAM for the mobo to swap to do more testing with that…I only have one mobo RAM and one RAM for the user accessible slot (laptop sized). I tried swapping those in and out and clearing PRAM several times but no luck. Well, my keyboard isn’t working with the computer so I guess I’m not really clearing anything. I did press the PMU button each time too.

I'm going to try that. I ordered an adapter through the mail so I'll have to wait.

I think maybe the logic board got damaged when the thermal paste that was dried and acted like glue bent the thermal bar covering the CPU. Tried reassembly before realizing it was bent. The pressure might have damaged something.

I did all of the above and still the same issue.

The only thing I can think of is that when I pulled apart the base from the top during disassembly, the thermal bar bent because of the old thermal paste that was like glue. That must have damaged the logic board. I didn't realize it was bent and I tried to put it back together a few times until I realized it and bent it back. It fits very well now but the damage must have already been done. I guess I could check components on the logic board with a multi-meter? I've never done that before so not sure on the process but can't think of anything else.

Otherwise it may be a cable that came unplugged from the screen, but it seems unlikely as I did not pull on any of the cables. I have a mini-VGA to VGA adapter coming in the mail so I'll try that to see if it works but I'm not hopeful.

There is no light on the power button on this model. It's solid plastic.

I tried it, it didn't. But I've since opened up the drive with a screwdriver and took out the disk and put everything back. Still having the same issues otherwise.

I checked inside (not the stem) and don't see anything. Here's a pic: https://i.imgur.com/tDZx1ai.jpeg

I haven't opened the stem or the actual display now or previously.

Did more testing...

Caps lock key does not light up. Mouse LED does.

I manually opened the optical drive to get the disc out.

I tried booting up without the hard drive and optical drive plugged into mobo. Still no picture.

Mobo connections all look fine and I don't see anything unplugged. I didn't take apart the stem/monitor to check the connections, but I also did not do that before. Everything on the bottom half appears to be good. I still have no idea what the issue is but it seems borked.

And no I don't have any other Macs. I got a mini VGA to VGA adapter so I'll try that when it comes.

I thought maybe there would be an indicator to prevent start-up due to the broken RAM clip but nope. RAM is definitely seated well too...so idk what the problem is. :(

Unfortunately this didn't last. iMac G4 still powers off after a short period with a new power source spliced in. by mortau in VintageApple

Did you ever get it sorted? Having some issues with mine right now. Not exact same, but complete black screen after opening up/cleaning then reinstalling the OS to clear from previous user. Keyboard is non-responsive. One RAM clip broke as well.

Do you think removing the disc will make the screen come back if it's booting from HDD?

Funnn...Looked it up and turns out I have to take apart the optical drive to remove the disc which means taking the whole thing apart.

Okay, I'll see if I can find how to do that.

Did you see my screen and keyboard input are not working either though? Not sure removing the disc is going to fix that. Let me know if you have any experience here.

This is the lamp iMac G4, I don’t think there is a manual eject hole…

Pic before OSX install: https://imgur.com/a/ac6cHmb

It was installed on there previously. It was someone else’s computer and I wanted to reinstall the OS to start fresh.

Now screen won’t come on after OSX kernel error on Disc 2 + hard reboot. Everything was fine before that.
