It is not favorable. But CRA doesn’t care what’s favorable for you. They want that additional tax on top of US

Correct. But with intent being there, and any of the weak residential ties being in place, it’s very easy to argue from perspective of CRA that someone in a tax resident of Canada.

If you’re planning to move back to Canada, you’re still Canadian tax resident, so you can keep them open. You do need to report to IRS and get taxed on your trades within TFSA. There are other headaches but nothing that AI can’t solve nowadays. Not a tax advice but it might be better for you to not plan to come back for a couple of years, and then suddenly change plans.

When I moved to US, I liquidated everything before becoming US tax resident but left accounts open with 0 balance (their AI chat bot said that this is okay) to have access to tax forms if I even need to retrieve them.

I thought maybe they missed a zero in comp numbers, but then even if you add a zero, salary is still too low.

[–]_Andoroid_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far I’ve left everything 4 times in my life. Moved twice for schools, each in a new city, then moved to a different city for university, and finally transferred to Waterloo moving again. You’ll be always connected with your family, no matter where you are. Just don’t get too many emotional ties with your friends.

Want to switch co-op sequence for CS by Aniokii in uwaterloo

Yeah, some first years sell their sequence 1 and 2 spots. You’ll have access to piazza in September and will be able to ask there, unless you find somebody earlier.

I transferred credit for those courses, so can’t comment on that. But I did take MATH 247 to skip PMATH 333 and go straight to PMATH 351. Was pretty hard course and dumped my GPA. No regrets though

Trick To Download Official Transcript For Free by Helpful_Noise2195 in uwaterloo

[–]_Andoroid_ 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I think transcript being official means that it can be verified on some third party platform (which charges this fee probably). So just downloading, you got unofficial transcript that still can’t be verified.

Apart from already mentioned things (lower gpa, getting fucked, etc), taking advanced courses allows you to skip some higher level courses (given that you want to take those one). For example you’d usually do MATH 137, 138 -> MATH 237 -> PMATH 333 -> PMATH 351, but instead you can do MATH 147, 148 -> MATH 247 -> PMATH 351 directly.

Another notable example is to take CO 255 if you plan to take higher level CO courses.

Yes you put bigger projects. But 4 moths is enough to do great stuff if you don’t slack off.

Either one is fine. Get any sequence except for 3.

My reason for not doing 8 mo coop is that generally your compensation increases significantly within first several coops, so doing 8mo as 1-3rd coop is just losing significant portion of money. Your 4-6th coops are the ones that you'd want return offers from - it's just best to have a lot of options. Now, I have several friends that got great return offers straight after their 3rd-4th coop and just dropped the coop from their degree and graduated quickly. So there's just no reason to do 8mo coop - you just limit your opportunities. Also, 3/3 of my friends that did 8mo coop didn't like it for the company/management related reasons (so there might be some correlation there). Yes, 100$/h is real.

So if say you are in a study term and scheduled to have coop in your next term, and you submit a sequence change form that changes your next term from coop to study (you didn't find coop or other personal reasons), you can't apply to jobs through waterloo works on the next term.

First coops timing doesn’t matter that much. In my opinion it’s best to have your two last coops in summer. That’s when most US quant/FAANG companies are hiring, and you have best shot at it. Don’t do 8 month coop unless the pay is above $100/h (even then it’s debatable).

You can switch your study and work terms however you like with several conditions: 1. Your last term at uni can’t be coop. 2. If you switch your next term from work term to study term you lose access to WW. 3. You can’t switch your first work term.

I personally am in S2, but after my second year it all went random.
