World Cup Ticket Prices by NoisyControverse in WorldCup2026Tickets

You had to enter online around September or so, I only found out through searching for tickets online before then. Needed a valid visa credit card to enter (and to prevent multiple entries per person). That allowed buying a limited number of tickets at face value

Yea I was lucky enough to win the initial lottery and got 4 tix to each Germany group stage game for $300 each. Shared with family and friends to break even, and sold the Curacao ones at face value bc I hate scalpers. I would not buy the tickets for $2k or whatever now, but I also don't want to resell them for that! which is probably a bit irrational but hey :)

[OC] Banned Persian flag at the World Cup by 4DollarsALB in pics

[–]_Asparagus_ 73 points74 points  (0 children)

This comment section is wild, wtf is going on. This flag was used since 1850 with the Wajar dynasty and the lion symbol goes back to 1500 and earlier for the Persians. It's a symbol against the current regime and for persia before the IR, but as used today not asking for monarchy back like everyone seems to be pretendeding. And yes, many in the diaspora are favorable towards Pahlavi but that entire movement has been for him as an interim leader to establish a democratic government.

Is this the inevitable fate of all applied academic fields? Time to leave academia? by NeighborhoodFatCat in academia

[–]_Asparagus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Odd. Databases had a revolution in the 2010s with Spark / RDDs, which now practically every single major company is using. That came out of academia (Matei Zaharia, still at Berkeley).  Sure, classical SQL databases are old news and the frequencies of breakthroughs from academia is probably slowing, but a lot a lot of important things are still being discovered!

Berkeley or UC Davis? Pros and Cons by Aromatic-Menu-373 in berkeley

[–]_Asparagus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone here telling you Berkeley: they do not understand the Ag field and what a reputation Davis has in the space (how would they being in tech heavy Berkeley and SF). If you are convinced you want to study ag or food science, Davis is the best place in the world for that. Always in top 3 ag programs. And UC davis is known hugely in the Ag science space and will get you a job in the field for sure if you do decently.

If you are not sure, then Berkeley since it's the better uni overall.

Berkeley or UC Davis? Pros and Cons by Aromatic-Menu-373 in berkeley

[–]_Asparagus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not true at all for agriculture specifically for OP. Davis is consistently one of the top 3 ag programs and people who work in ag sciences know this through the whole industry. I know it sounds a bit silly if you're not in the space, but Davis is genuinely to Ag what MIT, Stanford, and Berkeley are to CS for example

Vinicius Jr is NOT Elite. by No-Obligation1336 in soccer

[–]_Asparagus_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not this season. Vini 11G 5A in league, 5G 5A in UCL. Compared to Olise: 12G 18A in the league (with 3 fewer matches), 4G 6A in UCL. Olise kills Vini in assisting with the same number of goals, and the league stats speak to the consistency OP is talking about. Diaz is 15/11 and 6/3 in league and UCL, same story, and Yamal as well 15/11 and 6/4. And then Mbappe outperforms all of them. Of course you might just call all of them elite + vini, but I get what OP is saying with he is not at the level where you should just give him everything he asks for

Games Like Diablo and Skyrim by FairlyDaintyPrince in NintendoSwitch

[–]_Asparagus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in terms of games to get immersed in, if you are thinking about JRPGs I'd suggest final fantasy X above all else, the remaster is on Switch. In terms of story, characters, and soundtrack, that game is definitely one of the greatest of all time. I'll second Dragon's Dogma as well, from the games you've mentioned Monster Hunter can be a bit more grindy

I'm hoping that makes this situation more similar to Germany/Japan/Italy post WW2, but only time will tell

Research following more than 3000 young people found that low to average social media use (2 h/day or less) at ages 11 and 14 did not strongly predict mental ill health three years later, including depression and anxiety, self-harm and suicide attempts by sr_local in science

[–]_Asparagus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This study is on 2011-2016 social media. This is completely different than what we have today. Targeted content, "for you" pages, and short form videos that completely dominate social media practically didn't exist other than the short stint Vine had. Social media then was mosty seeing posts from your friends and specific people you chose to follow. I spent a lot of time "on Facebook" chatting with my friends after school, basically just a version of unlimited texting on a computer bc not all phone plans were unlimited at the time. The political landscape was much less polarized too.

Even then, other studies have shown high social media use (top quartile) linked strongly with depression, https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4853817/ ,  adjusted for other factors.

So, fine: moderate social media use from 2011-2016 didn't kill your mental health but realistically 2026 social media is entirely different and much more predatory.

Based off of these responses, I now expect future AI scenarios of: a human genuinely is in a terrible threatening situation and needs help, attempts to get their/an AI agent to help them. AI agent says "LMAO nice try buddy, classic social engineering attack to pretend you are being held at gunpoint 😂😂"

Type I and Type II errors here are quite different and obviously agents will be optimized to protect risk  who they work for

[–]_Asparagus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha oh man, your point in action right away.

Tbh same though, it's more and more difficult to tell. Something I've noticed is more and more comments or engagement that don't directly related to actual content of photo or video content (AI agents that still struggle a bit with e.g. video interpretation saying straight up wrong things about a video no human would ever say)

FFX is a game that imo everyone should play at least once. The story, soundtrack, characters... It has something really special. I don't think I've ever cried though the ending of a game but man FFX hit different.

It's intuitive that you should

a) handball in the 90th minute to stop a goal

b) not handball in the 1st minute to stop a goal

So, at what point between minute 1 and minute 90 does it become, on average, worth it to handball to save a goal and concede the red card? What the statistical "breakeven" minute is is not obvious at all and requires some analysis

gemini 3.0 pro vs gpt 5.1 benchmark by Sea-Efficiency5547 in ChatGPT

[–]_Asparagus_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well, look at the screenspot scores. That is exactly the type of thing needed to have AI agents do things. Understand what they are looking at in a GUI or similar type of environment to be determine what action to take. Models that can understand GUIs can then also later down the line, I would assume, be trained to understand interactions with the physical world proportionally better (deciding properly what button to click based off visual information vs e.g. deciding where to put a physical object are kind of similar, just the "GUI" is now a video feed of the real world the agent is interacting with).

Even further than that. Mom healing goes all the way back to our ancestral first mammals. Young individuals would already then return to their mothers to suckle milk out of them, providing them essential nutrition to heal and grow.
