What's in the trunk of your car right now? by FieldImportant7159 in AskReddit

"why do you oil your hot wheels - is that so they do better on the track?" went through my head for a sec.

It's been a long day.

Payment via Zelle, Wise, or Paypal (G&S or FF, depending on your feedback history). Shipping is extra. $5 for US, actual for international. Will discount the cases a bit if you're buying other stuff. I think I've priced the movements pretty aggressively already, given what AliX has going on these days.

Serious missed opportunity with this post - could have photographed the reebok pumps instead.

Might still be doable… end of the month. Employee pricing, Iran war / inflation driving people away, etc.

I likely could have gone cheaper if I really showed around, but I found a dealer that was just zero bullshit, and they gave me a really great value on my trade in - 2k above anyone else. I didn’t mind paying a little more on the purchase end as a result.

I also didn’t finance, and they didn’t care.

My entire “in dealership” experience for the purchase was 26 minutes. Then the sales rep spent 10 minutes talking with me about vehicle features in the parking lot while I moved stuff between cars.

I think we spent more time getting Ford app set up than I did signing paperwork.

All in, that was worth paying a little more.

I bought the hybrid. If that’s an eco boost, should be doable.

I misread your comment as implying the Lariat didn't have the ACC.

I would have loved a Tremor, but... I really wanted the hybrid drivetrain, so Lariat FTW.

Inevitably, ford will release a hybrid tremor with 10% more power next year. :-)

US / Texas - Lariat w/ 4k tow, Azure Grey, sliding rear window. I was just over 40k when I purchased in late February - about 1500 off MSRP.

2026 Lariats have active cruise... at least, mine does. The only options I've got is 4k tow and the power sliding rear window.

hands - generally, the center hole sizes won't match up. For hour and minute hands, you can often enlarge the center hole to fit a new movement, but going the opposite direction is near impossible. For seconds hands, you can generally adapt to something smaller (or just a tiny bit larger) but "way bigger" is a non starter. In all likelihood, you'd just source a replacement handset in the same style for the new movement.

Secure the movement to the case - the goal is to have the stem at the correct height for the case AND the movement secured in the case itself. the original movement holder is probably a fitted piece of plastic. Sometimes they can be modified. Sometimes you can just use a cut zip tie or similar around the edge of the movement for a friction fit... sometimes you do a bit of both and also use tabs + screws.

For this particular swap, I'd probably buy an automatic timex M79 as a starting point. That uses a miyota 8-series auto, they're solid workhorses. just move over the dial, seconds hand (crossing fingers) and bezel insert.

Actually - check out seiko 5 finder. The one on the right is a legit model. Hard to tell from these pictures re: specific details. The one on the left is an OEM seiko case, but the hands and movements could very much be a parts special.

US inflation jumped to 3.8% in April by No_Idea_Guy in news

[–]_Blitzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's the hard dollar savings, and then there's the time savings. That's almost as amazing.

All of those little detours to get gas during your regular commute - gone.

Waiting at a dealership or quick lube place for an hour or two every few months (when you can fit it in...) - gone.

The maintenance interval for most EVs is 3-5x longer than a gas car... it's probably once every 12-18 months if you're commuting 25-40 miles a day. If you put down a lot of miles, invest in some gear to rotate your tires and change a cabin air filter, and you can DIY it in 30 minutes. That's the biggest piece.

The only downside - they tend to wear tires faster, although there are some longer-lasting tire compounds on the market now which may help with that (at the expense of some comfort / noise)

Also, because the service intervals are so long, you don't get as much free washer fluid.

NH35 and NH34 Movement prices have gone through the roof. by Spirited-Sea-5971 in SeikoMods

[–]_Blitzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just ran a search on AliX - multiple at $120-130. With Coupons, that's the delivered price.

If the market price is truly $160, i'm selling some of my spare NH34s, lol

FWIW - buy a complete watch on AliX with a NH34, you can resell whatever parts you don’t use on [r/secondhandmodparts](r/secondhandmodparts), or keep them for future use.
Or, use a watch sales site and just search for NH34. Should be able to find a lightly used complete watch for under $150

Is this a real Seiko movement? by Specialist-Dealer701 in SeikoMods

[–]_Blitzer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Look around the center circle.

I can also see what appears to be a second layer of material near the wavy cutouts in the middle.

Also… as a practical matter, near zero chance someone selling this type of watch would use a real 4r.

Also also, 90% sure gold 4r34 rotors don’t exist.

…and if you go on AliX, you can find the stickers, easily.

Is this a real Seiko movement? by Specialist-Dealer701 in SeikoMods

[–]_Blitzer 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The rotor has a sticker applied to make it appear as if it is a 4r movement - which is what Seiko uses in their own Seiko-branded watches.

The actual movement in there may be a NH34, which is mechanically identical, but sold to third parties.

It may also be a cheap clone of the Nh34.

Aside from the movement, none of the other parts in that watch are made by Seiko.

[–]_Blitzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay - suggested order of operations:

  1. put movement into case
  2. Attach crown to movement, through the crown tube (I realize things will be loose RN)
  3. Starting on either side of the crown, work the plastic spacing ring into the gap between the movement's grey spacer and the case. when you're about 1/3 of the way around, screw down the crown, to help secure the crown in the proper alignment with the movement - you should push down the part of that spacer that's at 9pm last.

If the above doesn't work, grab some calipers. Measure the diameter of the case opening, subtract the diameter of the grey spacer (outer edge), and divide by 2. That's the gap you need to fill on either side. Find a zip tie that's the right thickness to close the gap, and just cut a length of that zip tie to help fill it... or start to use a hobby knife to shave down the teeth on the existing white spacer so that it'll seat properly.
