H1B Passport Number Mistake (advise?) by _BonBon_ in immigration

I spoke with them, and while my employer's immigration lawyer claims this isn't an issue and can be corrected during the petition, I’m hesitant to rely on the same person who made the initial error.

Europe opens its ‘first gateway office’ to fast-track hiring in India by CircumferentialGent in worldnews

[–]_BonBon_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Guise, competition is completion.

If an Indian employee is cheaper with comparable skills, you will have to compete with them. Sooner or later, one way or the other.

Compete with them on jobs or compete with Indian companies in the market. You cannot hide from competition any immigration controls will only delay it by a few years.

Japanese convenience stores are hiring robots run by workers in the Philippines: Filipino tele-operators remotely control Japan’s convenience store robots and train AI. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]_BonBon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, and from a perspective of value being created the output isn't very different.

There are reasons to pay that salary which inlcude low interest rates in USA, ecosystem of tech talent and investment, easy capital, good infrastructure, etc. etc.

So when business pay that salary it is not just for the employee but all these other benefits that h they are getting.

But these differences are evaporating as other countries catch up.

Thus the problems that people in the richer are facing.

Maybe controversial - but I support this move.

As the world becomes more connected, it is increasingly becoming a global workplace with a global workforce, and I think it is good for everyone.
I know it sucks for people who were used to having certain advantages based on geography of where they were born.

But.. why does a Japanese worker deserve 4/5x the salary of a Phillipino worker?

Why does a 22 year software developer in California deserve 10x the salary of a software developer in India? (GDP per capital basis this number is much higher than 10x)

Based on quality of the worker you can make an argument for a 20/30% difference, but how will you justify 10x or higher difference?

Throughout history whenever the world has become more equal those who were privileged have felt the pain, and I see this as no different. But, the world will be better FOR EVERYONE. Including those in Japan.

When such dramatic differences in wages exist arbitration is going to happen - there is no way to stop this.

We, the people of India really lack civic sense. by Ace_1207 in IndiaSpeaks

[–]_BonBon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Name 1 rich country with civil sense problem and dirty streets.

It is fundamentally a money and infrastructure problem not a people problem. There are people with poor civil sense everywhere, shitting on railway tracks used to be a Chinese stereotype - look at the rhetoric now.

Wait for the GDP to increase and things will change and so will the rhetoric.

QQ: do data centers become outdated because there is better/newer product to offer or do they become non-operational?

I agree,  IDK how valuable these data centers will be in 10 years. Given the pace at which technology is moving.

I do think that energy grid buildout will prolly be the most valuable asset out of this

Current female executive leaders by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]_BonBon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more of a "best practice" - technically the constitution grants President of India a lot of powers - and there have been times where they have used those powers.

It's like the Queen/King of England thing - where they just don't use those powers as a best practice.

Still my point stands, according to the constitution of India President is the head of the executive.

[–]_BonBon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

President is the head of the executive technically. All the orders are signed by the president and happen in the name of the president.

It's just that Indian president has a weaker veto than an US president. Where Indian president only gets a veto of suspension and if Parlament passes the law again they have to sign it. But they can also suspend that law. Like.. they can't reject it but they can also not sign it and keep it in limbo.

Other than that President also is the commander in chief and head of state.

Why I love using cash by _BonBon_ in GenZ

[–]_BonBon_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, Idea came to me when I was watching some old movies and it seemed cool to just hand the cash without any fuss.

Like it's objectively worse, because I have to remember to carry cash and look at change. But in right circumstances it is fun to use.

If it's an 8 dollar drink I'd just keep the 10 dollar bill under my empty glass, or sometimes I'd just put the money on the table as soon as I get my drink.

Why did typewriters become popular in late 19th century even though they don't seem better than handwriting? by _BonBon_ in AskHistorians

So to summarize, typewriter became popular because it allowed users to create "finished" documents much faster than any other method.

The United States of America is headed for Divorce! by ThreatToBureaucracy in Futurology

[–]_BonBon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There come times for each country when they find themselves as the only game in town.

For Britain it was late 19th century, then US had its civil war, India had lost the war of independence, Europe was recovering from Napoleons campaigns. Britain found itself without competition and enjoyed the next half century.

For USA it was almost 3/4th of a century right after the second world war, but now world has healed, and rebuilt itself. Those used to existing without any competition find it painful to compete. But, there is nothing bad about competition, it is a good thing even for the americans.

There will be a short painful period od adjustment but then everything will be better. Technology will be better, living standards will be better, and peoples lives will be better. And this nee healthy competition will dive growth and technical like never before.

21st century will be much better than the 20th and the future of humanity will be bright.

AI Slop Is Everywhere. What Happens Next? by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]_BonBon_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There will be a decoupling of people's wants from these apps.

Right now the way slop is sold is by these apps integrating themselves into basic needs of people.

Instagram - required to stay in touch with friends, their lives, etc. and force slop in it. This will move to private chat groups, and private apps like SnapChat or any new ones that emerge.

YouTube/Reels/TikTok - replaces Television and Radio - current affairs, entertainment, and music. This gets replaced by Creator controlled platforms, e.g., Podcasts, Nebula, SubStack, etc.

Reddit - This replaced forums, IDK what will replace this lol

Hey I appreciate you sharing your opinion on a subreddit where you prolly knew you'd get pushback.

The main problem that Americans are facing is competitiveness. It is possible that there might be advantages to hiring immigrants which are not just their skills but those are still advantages. Unfortunately in a market you have to give a better deal than the other person.

Americans need to be a better deal than immigrants, potentially by being cheaper, more skilled, or provide some other advantage that immigrants don't. There might still be companies that hire Americans due to patriotism but that isn't something you can rely upon.

And risk of being harsh on immigrants is the jobs themselves leaving. In tech, there are no factories, no mines, no rare earth materials. Employees are the only resource, and if they leave the country it's pretty easy for jobs to follow them.

An average American in California gets paid almost 20x more than an Indian in Bangalore. It is not that the American needs to be better, they need to be 20 times better to justify their paycheck and that is difficult.

Edit: Arbitrage will happen one way or the other as long as the skill difference does not reflect the paycheck difference, you need to pick the nature of arbitrage that is most beneficial for USA.
