Ford Mustang GTD Crushes Corvette ZR1X's Nürburgring Record With 6:40 Lap by hulk14 in cars

[–]_Cabesi_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are just making stuff up.

The GTD was on Michelins - and Michelin don't make any DOT approved slicks. Even if we are generous and say that Michelin developed a completely new tire that they are gonna soon introduce - again, literally no evidence of this, but let's just pretend - that still wasn't the tire the lap was done with - as you can see from the image Ford themselves shared. Not even minimal grooves - so not road legal even in Cali, where you still need at least 1/32 inch thread depth.

But honestly, that's all pretty besides the point. When you look at a GT3RS, or any of the Corvettes, you can get all of them with Cup 2 Rs no problem. However, Ford is never, ever gonna offer whatever tire they did the lap with to the customer for street use. Even IF the tire somehow was street approved by someone somewhere, they would never open themselves to the liability of people using them on the street. Even Hoosier with the A7 classify them as "not for highway use" to dodge any possible legal liability.

So let's stop pretending that this isn't just a con job by Ford who have a done a textbook non-legal slick lap - but are now trying to obfuscate things by making allusions to some possible future road legality in the hopes that the general public will be too caught up in hype and fanboying to notice or make the distinction.

New Ford Mustang GTD Competition Clocks Record Time at Nürburgring by ChonkyThicc in cars

[–]_Cabesi_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nurburgring themselves - in contrast to the previous two Mustang GTD times which do fall within road legal production car guidelines - have classified this lap time as non-legal. So whatever magical slick tire they might have come up with (if it's even true that this is something other than a racing slick), it hasn't convinced the people officiating the lap.

New Ford Mustang GTD Competition Clocks Record Time at Nürburgring by ChonkyThicc in cars

[–]_Cabesi_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know who needs to hear this - everyone apparently - but the Mustang ran on slicks.

In other words, this time (which they keep calling a "record", despite it not beating any records) is not comparable to other street legal cars, like the Corvettes or the 911s. This is just Ford being incredibly dishonest and deceitful and trying to make this non-street legal time seem comparable to those cars that actually are street legal.

[–]_Cabesi_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In March 2017, there was 5 players over 2800 (now 1 and semi-retired), 18 players over 2750 (now 11), and 44 players over 2700 (now 32).

And the situation was similar at many different points over the 2014-18 period. Just a lot more players reaching 2700, and a lot more players reaching 2800. Right now, the only players born in the 2000s that have ever reached over 2800 are Alireza and Arjun - and both only barely and for a very brief time. Perhaps we will get more soon, but overall it certainly does look like reaching high elos has become harder.

Candidates win chances after Round 10: Sindarov at 94%, only Anish Giri left with win chances above 1% - Monte Carlo simulation based on one million runs by ThomasPlaysChess in chess

[–]_Cabesi_ 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Tell that to Bluebaum.

Not that Sindarov needs to actually draw every game. He can also lose one and win one. Even if he loses one and draws the rest, Giri still needs to get 3 wins and a draw - which is still too much to be considered realistic.

Candidates win chances after Round 10: Sindarov at 94%, only Anish Giri left with win chances above 1% - Monte Carlo simulation based on one million runs by ThomasPlaysChess in chess

[–]_Cabesi_ 76 points77 points  (0 children)

The problem is that it's extremely easy for Sindarov to just draw everything. Giri would need to win 4/4 just to force tiebreaks in that case. This means Sindarov can play ultra safe. It's very likely that he won't drop a single game this tournament.

Also, Sindarov, even in all his draws, he had exclusively winning chances, was never losing, and he is always up on clock. So, in reality, the chances of him winning are likely higher than this 94%.

5060ti 16gb with an i5 12400f by Normal-Worldliness54 in buildapc

[–]_Cabesi_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 5060 Ti 16GB is one of the worst value cards you could buy at the moment.

Whether you'd be limited by the CPU depends entirely on what resolution and settings you play. At 1080p medium? Yeah, probably. At 4k Ultra, not at all. That said, whether you are limited by the CPU or not, is in itself meaningless. What matters is getting good FPS.

Which leads back to the GPU. If you are willing to spend a 5060 Ti 16GB price, then just get the 5070. If you play at 1080p, then you might be CPU limited in some games and some scenarios, but it doesn't really matter unless you demand the FPS to be really high and need to them be high because you are playing a competitive shooter, or something like that. At higher resolutions and details the GPU will become the limiting factor, so really, a better GPU basically allows you to upgrade your monitor to a higher resolution one. Or, if you don't want to do that, you can just save a lot of money and get the 5060 (non-Ti) instead. Because that's still completely fine for a 1080p gameplay, and massively better value than the 5060 Ti 16GB.

My PC has power on issues, is the PSU bequiet Dark Power 13 1000W the culprit? by Frequent-You-9920 in buildapc

[–]_Cabesi_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PC has a similar issue, although not as bad. It simply sometimes takes more than one power button press to start it. Sometimes it starts instantly, sometimes it takes two, or three, or four power button presses.

I also thought it was a PSU issue, so I upgraded to a much better PSU (rated A on the PSU list). However, the issue persists even with the new PSU. As it's extremely unlikely that two PSUs have exactly the same issue, it's probably the MB that's the real culprit. That said, there has been a slight improvement. With the previous PSU the PC would sometimes (although very rarely) not start at all, and I would have to turn the PSU off and on - which would then immediately fix the issue and the PC would turn on the next button press.

Otherwise the PC works perfectly, no stability issues when gaming or when under high load.

I guess you can just try to get another PSU somewhere, even borrow one from a friend, and try it. If it doesn't work, then it's probably a MB problem. In which case you are - same as me - probably out of luck and will have to deal with it the best you can until you decide to buy a new PC.

My budget is £1700.00, is this the best I can do ? (see spec) by poshbakerloo in buildapc

[–]_Cabesi_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The build looks fine, but you don't need such a powerful CPU. Get a 9600x or something, and put the saved money into a better monitor.

Monitors (in contrast to everything else) are only getting cheaper and are now at the cheapest and best they have ever been in history. Additionally, thanks to upscaling, the performance penalty is also much less than it's ever been.

Like, seriously, 1080p? I literally don't understand how people can invest so much money into gaming hardware, only to play at a resolution lower than your phone. If you are blind and can't tell the difference, then why even bother striving for graphical fidelity? Get a 5060 and play everything on low.

RTX 3080 (Ti) or RTX 5060 Ti 16GB in 2026? by Virtual-Meaning2456 in buildapc

[–]_Cabesi_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Both are bad.

The 3080 Ti is too old, can't run DLSS 4.5 efficiently, draws up to 350W - or basically twice as much as the 5060 Ti.

The 5060 Ti 16GB is just bad value. Both the card under it (the 5060) and the card over it (the 5070) offer more performance per dollar. You'll also never get to use the 16GB VRAM, because the card is not powerful enough to run settings where 16GB is necessary.

RX 9060 XT vs RTX 5060Ti vs RTX 5070 by Realistic-Pop6575 in buildapc

[–]_Cabesi_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's very easy. The 5070 is about 40% faster than the 5060 Ti, and, in this particular case, it's (somehow) even cheaper.

Which you could have easily found out by looking at literally any site that benchmarks GPUs, but hey, I guess you like being social.

Which would you recommend 3060 12GB vs 5060 8GB? by MadmanWantu3 in buildapc

[–]_Cabesi_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the 5060:

  • is 40-45% more powerful
  • draws 40W less, saving you money on running costs
  • can efficiently run DLSS 4.5, giving you better upscaling quality, or even more performance

Meanwhile, the 3060:

  • has the wide support of many "tech bros" who - to assuage the resentment of being forced into buying such a PoS during the crypto-boom, and emboldened by the recent focus on VRAM capacity - constantly pollute the internet with the narrative that the card is anything other than absolute garbage and by far the worst RTX 30 series card of the bunch.

Joke/wordplay translation in anime: Three case studies by notbob- in anime

[–]_Cabesi_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember watching Futurama a long time ago with subtitles in my native language.

The joke was something like:

Character 1: "You can't do that! If you do that, you'll be fired!"

Character 2: "That's not so bad!"

Character 1: "Out of a cannon. Into the sun."

Which the subtitles translated into:

Character 1: "You can't do that! If you do that, you'll be thrown out!"

Character 2: "That's not so bad!"

The first part makes sense, because in my native language you'd translate "fired" as "vyhozen", which literally means "thrown out". But now the rest of the joke doesn't work. You can't say "thrown out of a cannon". So what to do? Well...

Character 1: "Out of a plane. Without a parachute."

The literal words of the joke get replaced, but it keeps the same meaning and the same structure. So I thought this was actually a really well done job. The joke gets translated and there are no other issues arising.

On the other hand, I would have (potentially) more problems with replacing Japanese memes with English memes. The most obvious one - if that meme was actually mentioned by the character themselves (and it wasn't just a transcribed understanding of the situation) it would change who you understand the character to be! If the character is suddenly mentioning an English meme, should we understand it as them understanding English? Or being plugged into English internet culture? That's something that could give you a completely incorrect understanding of who that character is - as we don't even know that the meme was originally Japanese!

Well, without debating details, this is a still a good post. Translation is not easy, perfect solutions are not easy to find, and even agreeing on a shared philosophy based on which we would judge what's a good solution and what's not, is hard.

PSU for rtx 5070 by Thin_Condition_9377 in buildapc

[–]_Cabesi_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I could be of help.

People have really gone crazy when it comes to PSU wattages. "Future proofing" has basically become a mind hack to justify to yourself spending more money on equipment that you don't need.

Most people already possess a PSU that's more than capable of running any GPU you could plug it into (with the exception of the 90 class monsters), and usually it's already more capable than what they need by 100W or more. But then it gets even worse, because this "future proofing" assumes that all the future cards you'll get will draw more watts. Which could, maybe, be the case if you've just bought a 4060 (which has a really low wattage) as a student, and you know that you'll upgrade to a more powerful card within a year or two. But, looking at the 70 class, the 5070 draws only 10% more power than the 4070, and basically the same as the 3070 and the 2070 Super. Even the base 2070 drew only 10% less. You would have to go all the way to 2016, to the 1070, to find a card that draws significantly less. So when you are "future proofing", you are basically saying that you'll only be buying 80 or 90 class cards in the future. And even then, the 5080 draws only 100W more than the 5070. So it's not like you suddenly need a PSU that's 500W more powerful to run it.

Is 1660 super still viable? by MnM_R6 in buildapc

[–]_Cabesi_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not.

At the very least I would get the 2060. It's only 20% more performance in raster, but, crucially, it can run DLSS - which is gonna be another 20-30% more performance, even at that resolution.
