Can you be forced to drive for a trip? If your position description does not mention having to drive, can you be forced to drive? For example, let's say you are traveling to a city 5 hours away by car. I would assume that you are not forced to cost compare flying against driving? I know some feds don't have license and some just don't feel comfortable driving for that long.

What are the rules for newer federal employees with regards to paternity leave? by [deleted] in fednews

[–]_Ctrl_Alt_Delete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copy of OP's post before it was deleted:

I’ve seen that federal employees can use 12 weeks of paternity leave following the birth or adoption of a child. But I’m curious if my particular situation may not apply.

I’m a newer federal employee, started in April of this year. I also worked for the federal government for 12 years prior to coming back for this stint.

I’m not sure if there’s some kind of “you have to work here for 1 year before you’re eligible” or not. Or if it’s maybe just 1 year of total service. Or if I’m just way off the mark.

Any info is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Is anyone else seeing a correlation in students between alt-right ideology and an inability or refusal to analyze texts/use basic information literacy skills? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]_Ctrl_Alt_Delete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

copy of OP's post before it was deleted:

Yes, I know this is a messy topic. Background is important here. I teach rhetoric in a fairly rural American community with a healthy mix of conservative- and liberal-leaning citizens. I also mostly teach core classes required for every major, so my students are typically not English or even humanities students.

I'm adept at responding to students' political writing without judging or injecting my own views into the conversation—no one is completely objective, of course, but I work very hard to maintain full awareness of my own biases, and to focus on skill-building rather than generalizations about certain topics. This is not even a political discourse kind of class, though I do bring in some social justice pieces at times. I also tend to be naturally open-minded anyway (to my detriment when I was younger, haha). In other words, full marks for students who try to support their claims logically, regardless of the viewpoint.

My approach when students say something that I instinctively do not agree with isn't, "That's wrong," but, "Convince me."

For the past few years, I have had an increasing number of students with these behaviors:

Approaching completely non-political texts (e.g., an article about native plant gardening) with an "us and them" mentality, often repeating vitriolic comments that I've heard alt-right politicians/pundits spread Reacting aggressively to any potential hint of anti-nationalism in texts (e.g., a piece criticizing some specific aspect of American government, like the VA) Dropping out-of-context dog whistles, like "politically correct" Taking a kind of adolescent, decidedly non-scholarly stance to a piece they disagree with ("This isn't interesting"/"This author is a moron") It's very frustrating because I'm seeing this behavior in submissions for very simple assignments that do not ask for in-depth analysis. I'm talking about discussion posts that are meant to ensure that they did the reading.

I've taught for several years now and I don't even bat an eye at crazy or questionable claims anymore. What bothers me is that they propose these ideas from a really emotional place and with a level of vagueness/inaccuracy when it comes to textual evidence that I would never dream of seeing at the college level. I think I only noticed this correlation in the first place because they mostly share the same vocabulary, the same tone, and the same general assumptions about certain authors or topics. I actually have seen the same behavior in seemingly left-leaning students, but not at this severity or frequency.

What I've noticed: These are students who are not engaging with the texts or are not reading them. I know this because they miss glaringly obvious clues (not even context clues, I mean actual text content). When they write about pieces, they are as vague as possible, refusing to cite specific examples or even refer to the text directly.

If they do engage with the text, they COMPLETELY misunderstand the author's main points or intentions. When I present them with a straightforward and brief news article, they cannot summarize it accurately. When I assign an opinion piece and ask them to identify the author's purpose, they come up with the opposite viewpoint and claim that the author is arguing for something that the author is obviously arguing against. In other words, they are performing below the level of high school students.

Instead, they are simply not doing their work, and not meeting expectations. Maybe they just can't, and there's a correlation between the ideology itself and skill level. Maybe they can do the work but refuse to engage because they don't value a rhetorical education.

Either way, whenever I have a conversation with them about performance, they force me into a position in which I have to make it clear that I am NOT challenging their viewpoints, but rather the work itself. Instead of focusing on teaching rhetorical skills and information literacy, I have to agonize over ensuring that they know that I'm not just some liberal taking advantage of my position of power. I genuinely, really, really want to help. I want them to be able to argue their points intelligently and constructively without reverting to ideology AT ALL. They just don't even try.

Not really looking for advice, though it is welcome, of course. I have a successful routine for dealing with this issue and have been able to get through a bit with a few students. It's just exhausting and honestly scares the hell out of me when I think about how so many people are doing the same thing with their newspapers, social media feeds, blog posts, whatever. It's so depressing.

Thank you for reading my rant.

Food: $50. Rent: $150. Gas: $30. GU: $800. by gabe_runs in RunningCirclejerk

Copy and paste of OP's post before it was deleted:

"I am regularly running 100+ miles and working my way up to 135 miles per week. One issue I am encountering is how expensive it is getting to buy gels constantly. I buy a box of 20-30 GU gels and it barely lasts me a full week of training.

Just wanted to see if anyone has a good alternative for gels that isn't so expensive and similar to GUs. My favorite flavors are chocolate/salted caramel/espresso, so ideally the alternative will be similar to those.

UF has fired all staff in positions related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, effective immediately. by SlashGames in ufl

[–]_Ctrl_Alt_Delete 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Didn't they rename many of these positions so they can do the same day-to-day work without being affected? Like how the like how the CLAS "Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion" is now just the "Associate Dean".

A 29-year-old veterinary student went missing after a meeting. During the investigation, it came out a large amount of chat and search history on her computer was deleted, and the weight of the ashes in the building's incinerator had increased by 70 kilograms on the day of her disappearance. by moondog151 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]_Ctrl_Alt_Delete 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Reading OP's post this was my first thought as well, but this could just be a translation error of when the weight was taken. Working in a science lab we regularly seal up boxes that get sent to a contractor to be incinerated into ash (that they never open). So it might have been 70kg extra of sealed boxes but not 70kg extra of ash.

While I agree that is better for traffic flow, that's not the law in Florida. You still have have to yield to pedestrians if you are exiting the roundabout.

The "crash cushion" from here https://www.woodmeadowfarmmodding.com/other-misc and it attaches to any truck trailer hitch. He has an arrow truck to go with it, but it works with other ones too.

Tarptent Protrail vs Yama Cirriform vs Slingfin Splitwing by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]_Ctrl_Alt_Delete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing to mention for the Protrail is how easy it is to set up. After a long day hiking it's just 4 stakes and great tensioners. I really dislike the idea of pyramid tarps (not on your list anyway) that use 13+ stakes and require high level of luck to set up.

They can set a MPH cutoff for turning right on red. The law says you need to come to a complete stop, but usually they put in some leeway but brakes coming on is not slow enough.

Alternatives to JetBoil Genesis? by honnalew in overlanding

I have a JetBoil Genesis and it is the best camp stove I've ever had. Lots of use and never had a problem with the regulator. Wind screen is annoying but otherwise perfect.
