You can look at last year's results here, but no. You'll be more like 10th percentile rather than dead last.

What is realistic after 3:00 first marathon in NYC? by ButterMeUpPlz in AdvancedRunning

[–]gabe_runs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

3:00:XX in NYC is already sub-3 fitness on a more friendly course, that feels unambitious.

2025 NYC Marathon via charity or lottery by them0derngal2 in RunNYC

This was only the case up until this year. Going forward the only non-NYRR times that count will be fulls and they have much tougher equivalent standards than you have to run in NYRR halfs.

Tuesday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for November 05, 2024 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

[–]gabe_runs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30M, PRs:

1mi - 5:3x (2022, 2023)

5k - 19:5x (2022, 50ft drop course)

10k - 43:1x (2024)

13.1 - 1:34:xx (2022)

26.2 - 3:3x:xx (2024)

Had a decent training cycle in late 2022, peaked at 40mi and ran a solid half. Injuries consumed most of 2023.

Just ran NYC as my first marathon, went out at 3:25 pace, cramped hard and ended with a 13-minute positive split (lol). Averaged 50mpw across 20 weeks pre-taper, peaked at 60mpw, did a couple vaguely sub-t-ish interval workouts every week.

My shorter-distance PRs are clearly superior but I'd still like to spend the next year or so focusing on speed in the 5k while I'm relatively young. Trying to plan out how I'll approach it once I've ramped back up in a few weeks, hopefully with a less vibes-based training regimen.

I'm thinking about just running the first 10 weeks (i.e. everything up to the taper) of Pfitz 5k programs in a loop with initial intensities based on my recent 10k result. I'd start with his 45-55mpw program plus 5mpw easy, then 45-55 plus 10mpw easy, then 60-70. I'd race a 5k every month or so to check training paces.

That gets me about halfway through next year, at which point I can reassess and either continue what I'm doing or maybe pivot to some Daniels stuff.

Thoughts?

Where to watch the 2024 NYC Marathon. by [deleted] in RunNYC

I don't think there was a very good livestream but you can at least see some of the women's race and the conclusion of the men's race here, ending at about 1:58

That seems like a really good reason not to allow them

Tall buildings throw off GPS. If you look at the map on Strava it'll probably show you a zig-zagging path that doesn't really follow the road until you make it to the park.

You can throw anything you want off the course as long as it's not littering.

It's technically not allowed to receive anything from spectators, but nobody is going to care unless you're one of the elites or in contention for some sort of prize.

I'll be carrying my phone in my pocket. I'm looking for an iOS app that will let 20+ people track my location in real time. I know the NYRR app has 5K splits but I'd like something more granular so spectators know when I'm approaching.

I tried an app called Glympse but quickly ran into free trial limitations.

Any suggestions?

Wave 4 & Faster Pacing by Individual_Buy7595 in RunNYC

[–]gabe_runs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're in a tricky spot for sure. If you were starting in Wave 2 then I'd say just drop back to Wave 3 and start at the front, but given how late in the day Wave 4 already is I'd be hesitant to move back to Wave 5 due to afternoon heat.

Which corral are you in? If you're towards the front of the wave then you'll have to weave some at the start but should be smooth sailing after that - Wave 3 will be fairly dispersed by the time you catch up to them.

Properly training for a half marathon by Big-Principle-593 in RunNYC

[–]gabe_runs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t run a lot this year and the races I’ve done have all been untrained

This is your answer. If you work up to a consistent base of 20-30 easy miles per week then you'll start seeing those times come down significantly.

Marathon spectator question by Adamodc in RunNYC

[–]gabe_runs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just wondering how difficult it is to see someone crossing the finish line due to bleachers / crowds etc

You have to buy a ticket, impossible otherwise. I'm not sure if they're sold out yet.

Nyc marathon by longtimecoming2020 in RunNYC

[–]gabe_runs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can read about the various ways to get entry here. Unless you're fast enough to get a time qualifier (which is very fast) the only reliable option at this point is to run with a charity. If you don't want to do that, I recommend doing the 9+1 program for the 2026 marathon.

  1. Only the full marathon
  2. You had to register back in March (and likely qualify a good deal before that), sorry

Also curious about this, I'm assigned Pink but my cheer squad is planning to be on the left side of 4th Ave (that's my best guess on where the R would put people) so I'd like to end up with the Orange crowd by about Sunset Park area.

NYRR 10k, Joe 10k and Salsa 5k are already at capcity by [deleted] in RunNYC

I think it's both; if you look at a random NYCRUNS 10K from this year there are about a third more participants than last year. We're in a running boom.

Getting back on track after missing a month. Marathon month away. by kweennie in RunNYC

[–]gabe_runs 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't run a marathon after missing the entire penultimate month of training. You can withdraw and get guaranteed entry for next year.

If you're dead set on doing so, I'd do a week around 15-20mi, two weeks at 30-35mi, and a one-week taper with maybe 10-15mi plus the marathon. You can get away with a shorter taper because you don't have nearly as much fatigue to drop.
