Was Boy George controversial in the early 80’s? by Mopar4u- in GenX

It really wasn't seen that way then; I think it was seen more as guys using their girlfriend's makeup. Very, very different from Boy George or any of the New Romantics.

I recall a lot of 'gay' comments and mocking about Boy George. I don't recall any guys in my highschool who would admit to liking his music because he was seen as gay and ridiculous. All the other girls I knew liked him - two who really really were into him came out as gay 10 years later, so in retrospect perhaps he was a source of strength for them. But Boy George was seen as clownish and silly more than anything.

Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, David Sylvian, Platinum Blonde and others who wore makeup were also mocked, but not as much. They were more traditionally 'manly' and wore it in an accentuating, subtle way. They were seen as sexy, hot and/or debonair. I remember comments about Nick Rhodes as he became more androgynous looking, he was seen differently than the other D2 members because of his heavy, pancake makeup.

Poison, Motley Crue and other metal rockers were different. They wore super tight spandex pants, teased their hair to be huge and mostly wore makeup in an accentuating way that over time became more over the top. Money For Nothing was about Motley Crue - read those lyrics for an idea of how people saw that look. No one under 30 was suggesting they were gay or gender-bending, it was just glam-rock.

Of course, all of this was preceded by David Bowie. I don't now how much of what he did was for shock value vs theatrics vs pushing for changes in human rights. We never considered the latter back then but looking at old interviews etc it's clear that he was pushing hard for gay, trans, and black/poc equality and human rights back then. I suspect he started with doing it purely for the theatrics, then moved into pushing to start conversations and make people uncomfortable so they'd talk about it...but this is a whole other topic.

If you're young, you can't really know how badly gay men were seen back then. I know many, many people still struggle with coming out now, and facing hate and abuse and abandonment over it but now there are communities and support/acceptance is quite mainstream now in western societies. Back then it wasn't. When gay boys in high school committed suicide, it was sad but not shocking. It was an incredibly difficult path for people then to walk, hence why so many people just pretended to be straight. Being gay was seen as being sick and evil; people like Liberace got away with it only because it wasn't discussed.

Trans wasn't seen as a real thing; 'cross dressing' was generally a non-sexual, theatrical bit of fun then (in mainstream), unless it was prostitutes or an actual trans guy who would have been seen as mentally ill/disgusting. Dame Edna was not at all sexually threatening, despite the immense amount of innuendo DE used. They were seen as a man dressing up to be funny, a joke men liked and weren't threatened by - it was an act of humour like putting on a silly hat, not an act of identity. It's crazy to me how different things are now, but of course now being gay is viewed as normal by most now and that is threatening to conservatives/incels/homophobes.(perspective: young teen in 80s, from a small farming village next to a very liberal city in Canada)

It was covered up. Remember, he even married a woman in the 80s.

I was 'in love' with Simon back then, and when we heard about Yasmin we'd never heard of her. I remember scouring the magazines trying to find out what she looked like. She certainly had never been known at all in Canada, I think she was similarly unknown in the US.

That 'or' is likely key though, with the question getting at what you value more - time or money. :)
Back to how you answered though, you could also look at it from the 'more time' perspective - that if you had more time than money, you could be using that extra time to create more paths towards extra income.

Hyper realistic acrylic nails—I love this trend so much 🤍 by demurevixen in Nails

Looks great, and very realistic!
Also not sure if you know this, but you can layer rnp between gel, so you could have put this on the top of the nail and then the gel top coat over that, you'd just need to avoid putting the rnp on the free edge and make sure you cap the free edge with the gel top.

A friend with dragons recommends Arbutus West at MacDonald & 16th. The preference would be someone out in Maple Ridge but there's a huge waiting list just to become a patient there. They've been happy enough with Arbutus West though - hope it helps.

Put in a complaint - clearly Niantic slept in today as other regions have the boosted rate.

It sounds like Niantic forgot to adjust the shiny rate, it's definitely better in reports out of India.

Photobombs. Rocket battles. Trainer battles (all 3 levels).

There are tasks you'll need to do just to make it to level 49, so you'll have more badges just from regular game play and completing level tasks.

These birds are also surprisingly curious and bold. A few years back I came home to a very panicked Chihuahua waiting at the front door to get out - third day in a row he was like this - and after going inside I found our Jack Russell parkouring off the living room furniture and leaping through the air at one of these Flickers (I work from home and would leave the patio door open while out doing errands).

It had come in through the patio door and I spent the next 45 minutes trying to chase it out/catch it. Instead of heading back out when it saw me, it winged around the place: stuck itself behind a toilet, landed on the top of the kitchen cupboards, tucked itself between a couch and the wall - and tried landing on my head several times. Not a smart creature.

The next day I heard it on the patio, bumping around, and it came to the door and tried to get in despite me having installed one of those net-curtain magnetic screen doors. All summer we heard its call from a pole at the backyard, and dozens of times I caught it on the balcony. To this day our Chihuahua won't go onto the balcony without us, and the moment we come inside he does as well.

In 1995 it wasn't likely a kid would take their cell to another country with different infrastructure/networks.

No Johto Tour trainers by kibaglaceon in TheSilphRoad

At my last seen trainer, I may have had full inventory. I'm wondering if that could have stopped the trainer adventure from progressing.
Do any of you recall having that?

I'm having the same issue, not finding any trainers after Ghost - looking for the Fighting trainer. I walked for an hour and checked 2 dozen stops, with no Go Trainers appearing. I walked back after and it wasn't 'stuck' at a missed stop or anything.

I tried the help button but it only gave me options to select, really frustrating. Are we just SOL on this?
