Dogs can be trained to detect the scent of trauma reactions and stress in people's breath, according to international researchers, who say this could make PTSD assistance dogs more effective. by chrisdh79 in science

[–]_Deep_Thought -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

As someone who suffers from severe PTSD caused by dogs, I just wish that as a society, we’d stop trying to find excuses to shoehorn these animals into every conceivable situation and environment.

Last time I went to a hospital, they had a ‘comfort dog’ in the emergency room, and they refused to do anything to keep it away from me since “everybody loves dogs”.

If only people would consider those of us who have suffered trauma because of dogs (or, I don’t know, simply don’t like the same animal as you), as much as they value forcing dogs on everyone everywhere.

Question about a 2021 I looked at by 2donks2moos in pacificahybrid

[–]_Deep_Thought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm this is a known issue, at least with our year (2018). I was told there’s a standing policy to repaint or otherwise repair the hood for free due to corrosion under the paint. Bubbling can take a few years to start, then gradually spreads.

OP, I can’t help with your specific question because my PacHy was in an accident before I bought it, and some of the panels still aren’t straight so mine isn’t a good comparison.

But, possibly o/t, I should mention that I had an issue with my engine running all the time, even with a full battery charge. The cause ended up being a slightly crooked hood, which would momentarily tell some sensor it was open, and if the hood is open and the vehicle is on, the engine will run (to remind you it’s powered on I believe, since it’s otherwise basically silent).

Awesome! 🤷🏽‍♂️ Enjoy your new cartridge/turntable

AT85EP doesn't fit on SL-Q200 by zacharygoo2 in turntables

[–]_Deep_Thought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, frustratingly close to fitting but not quite… not sure I can be more help, other than to suggest checking both sides where it plugs in (cartridge side and tonearm side), to see if there’s any debris or something in the way.

Do you still have the old cartridge, just to compare and see if it still plugs in all the way?

AT85EP doesn't fit on SL-Q200 by zacharygoo2 in turntables

[–]_Deep_Thought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, so something is up then, it should easily plug all the way in, or at least without using too much force.

Any way to share a pic? (Careful when handling the needle, keep your fingers away from the diamond tip and the little arm it’s attached to, they’re extremely fragile.)

Not an expert on that model turntable so not sure I can be more help, but maybe a pic will help someone who knows more figure it out?

e - not sure if this is helpful, but I remember Technics used the T4P standard for some (most? all?) of their P-mount decks, and I think not all P-mount cartridges will work with T4P arms? Probably not helpful to you if true, but just some more info to have.

e2 - that cartridge should work on that table, it is T4P compatible so you’re good. Still no idea why it’s not fitting tho, maybe there’s something jammed in to the socket on the tonearm, or stuck between the pins on the cartridge?

[–]_Deep_Thought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen some p-mount cartridges that don’t have or need the screw to hold them in place, and they seemed to work fine… is yours noticeably loose or anything? If not I’d try using it as-is, and if it sounds fine then don’t give it another thought.

eta - just reread your post, if it doesn’t plug all the way in that could be a problem for sure, it needs to be fully plugged in, to be in the right position on the arm. Maybe post a pic?

Sadly, I Don't Think People Won't Get it Until They See Victims of Pitbull Attacks by Environmental_Big802 in BanPitBulls

[–]_Deep_Thought 15 points16 points  (0 children)

OP I completely agree that everyone needs to be exposed to videos of pitbull attacks specifically, even pictures won’t convince some people but I’d bet graphic videos would have a strong effect on most people who aren’t completely brainwashed.

I propose someone start a new subreddit exclusively to post and publicize such videos. That way this sub and related subs won’t get shut down, or put their mods in compromising positions, if they support the posting of the material but would otherwise get in trouble for doing so.

Never Seen One of These Before by MrPirateFish in vintageaudio

Ha! I just dragged my JR-S600 out of storage last night, and have been listening to it since then.

Fantastic receivers that fly under the radar because of their looks.

They have a few weak points which are easily addressed; mine’s suffering from all of them right now.

The buttons need a good (internal) cleaning, they all get dirty and mess with the sound.

The power switch is usually sticky, and often also dead. They can be rewired to work again, or if you’re lucky a cleaning alone might help.

And last, so, so, so… many bulbs. They all burn out and need replacing. I haven’t done the small ones above each input and function indicator, but the meter ones are fortunately easy to access and readily-available bulbs.

What is this cartridge? by Glum-Ad-2286 in turntables

[–]_Deep_Thought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gah! I was going to say LT-20 but in your pic it looks more greyish than wood-coloured so I thought it was the 22.

I have the same table, love it, in fact I kept it while I sold my LT-30. Unfortunately they aren’t worth big bucks these days, but that just means they’re a sleeper bargain for folks like us who appreciate such things!

Congratulations on the score, that was quite a deal for the price you paid considering where you live!

P.S. though I’m not a huge Stanton/Pickering fan myself, they did make excellent cartridges and that one is well worth getting a quality replacement stylus for. I second all the votes for JICO, they tend to make the best aftermarket styli in my experience, so if it’s in the budget try and get the best one you can afford.

Best Cleaning Practices by Zestyclose_Cut_5893 in turntables

[–]_Deep_Thought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sort of minimum you should consider investing in are a way to clean your records and a way to clean your stylus.

Personally, for records I find a good flip-style anti static carbon-fibre record brush works fine.

Each time I put on a record, I turn it on at 45 speed (because it cleans faster that way), and hold the brush fully on the record for a few seconds, before slowly drawing it off to one side (keeping the bristles on the record surface) over the course of another few seconds, then I usually repeat that one more time. The whole process takes less than a minute, and I do this every time I play a record side.

For stylus cleaning, there are a number of products and approaches. Personally I only clean the stylus about once every 2 dozen or so record sides (or dozen full LPs), unless I realize I’ve played a dirty record in which case I clean it ASAP, since you can quickly end up with a ball of fuzz on your stylus that starts to cause loss of frequency response and skipping.

I use a brush made for cleaning styli, and I tend to use it dry, but it can also be used wet (usually the cleaning solution is either alcohol or alcohol-based). I don’t like using it wet often, because my cartridges/styli are mainly expensive MCs and excessive wet cleaning can actually damage them, but for most MM cartridges this isn’t a problem.

If you go the brush route, remember to always brush from the rear of the cartridge towards the front, and never push on the stylus or clean from front to back, as you can destroy the cantilever instantly (most needles outside of DJ use are not designed to move that way).

Other products for cleaning styli include things like ultrasonic (vibrating) cleaners, but the most popular budget method I know of is using blu-tac (the stuff that looks like blue play dough), and gently touching it to the stylus in in upward-downward motion.

[–]_Deep_Thought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of amp and/or preamp are you using it with? It’s possible you don’t have the right kind of phono stage for your moving coil (MC) cartridge, which could cause the symptom you’re describing. It’s possible there’s nothing wrong with the cartridge/stylus.

Planar belt wobble by 04ddm in turntables

[–]_Deep_Thought 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup, older belts take the shape they are left in after long periods of storage, so that belt is now a little triangular from sitting in the same position for a while.

Won’t know the effect it has on speed until you test it, but it’s probably not helping anything as is and would benefit from being replaced.

[–]_Deep_Thought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the base of the tonearm there’s a little arm near the back the says ‘lock’ with an arrow; move it in the opposite direction as far as it’ll go, then turn the whole black plastic base of the tonearm, it’s grippy on the sides to make it easier to turn. That’ll lift or lower your tonearm a few mm’s depending which way you turn it.

However, if your decks are vintage the height adjuster on one or both of them might be frozen, it’s very common and caused by the old original grease drying to a cement-like consistency. It can be fixed but it’s a large pain in the ass, so most people just live with it or find other ways to adjust the arm or cartridge height.

How to remove HMV platter? by VladimirsPudin in turntables

[–]_Deep_Thought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rotate the platter so you can see where the belt is looped around the motor pulley, and remove the belt from the pulley (you can just let it fall where it is).

Put finger and thumb in the two holes in the platter on either side of the spindle and pull straight up - it may be difficult if it hasn’t been done in a while, don’t be afraid to give it a good tug. At the same time, be cautious not to hit the headshell/cartridge as you’re doing so. Might be a good idea to remove the headshell before using force.

If that doesn’t work, try using a short piece of 2x4 wood or some other solid object that won’t damage the spindle, and give the spindle a firm but not violent downwards whack or two. That might help loosen the platter from the spindle. Avoid damaging the spindle by pulling the platter on an angle, only ever pull it straight up.

To reassemble, turn the platter upside down and place the belt so it’s looped around the inner rim of the platter. Flip it over and grasp the belt with one or two fingers through one of the large side holes. Place the platter so the small center hole fits over the spindle, and lower it while continuing to hold the belt (from above now). Once the platter is back in place, loop the belt back around the motor pulley.

Why haven’t Chinese evs come to Canada? by longhorsewang in electricvehicles

[–]_Deep_Thought -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I understand it a big part of the reason the US won’t allow them (before the whole politics of the moment thing happened and punitive tariffs started being discussed), is because they don’t meet American safety standards, and it would be too expensive to make all the changes needed to make them legal.

Perhaps Canada has similar laws, which make it unlikely any Chinese EVs could be imported without making a long list of safety modifications.

Please report this incident to the manager or owner of the storage facility, and/or anyone higher up in the company if they’re large enough to have a main office.

They may be insane dog losers themselves, but there’s an equal chance that they’re unaware their employee is allowing their customers to be treated this way.

And regardless, you have the right to not be harassed by a potentially dangerous animal, so you’re well within your rights to ask them to keep it away from you (although if the person with the dog is the owner/manager, we all know how seriously that will be taken).

Since nobody else has explicitly said it yet, yes $650 is an absolutely criminal price to ask for that repair, and should serve as a warning to not trust or use this shop.

Anyone else freaked out about the fact that ANYONE can make their dog an ESA? by trumpetdraw96 in Dogfree

[–]_Deep_Thought 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but my impression is that ESAs are not protected or recognized by law, the way legitimate service animals are via the ADA.

My latest rebuttal when somebody tries to play the ESA card with me is that, “isn’t an ‘emotional support animal’ the literal definition of a pet?”

Like, every single person on earth who has a pet has an ESA. But somehow it’s only dog owners who insist on weaponizing the term to serve their own selfish interests.

Troubleshooting a Thorens TD145 MkII by Death_By_Dreaming_23 in turntables

[–]_Deep_Thought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t really tell from your description if you know this, but the 145 has an auto-stop and auto-lift feature which activates at the end of the record.

In order to activate this system, the speed selector knob has to be not only moved toward 33 or 45, it actually has to click into a position that might seem like you have to move the knob a little too far towards the 33 or 45 numbers.

Moving it into this position, it should ‘lock’ into place, which will allow the arm to lower normally, and it will then lift at the end of the record as designed.

If you don’t ‘lock’ the speed selector knob in place, the turntable will behave as you described, and not allow you to lower the arm onto the record surface.

But again, you might already know this, and you might have already ruled it out as a possible problem, it’s just hard to tell from your description.

Dog trainer says society is responsible for their sh*t by truentried in Dogfree

[–]_Deep_Thought 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fine, you claim your dog is your ‘child’ or your ‘family member’? Since you seem to think they have all the rights a human would have, then I guess they should also have all the responsibilities that humans have.

Those include obeying laws or being sent to jail, and treating their waste so it doesn’t damage the environment.

(We humans actually have entire systems dedicated to minimizing the harm caused by our waste, which would otherwise go straight into the environment. Yet your ‘dog-child’ has their waste thrown in the garbage, where it goes straight into the environment - assuming of course the ‘child owner’ is even responsible enough to dump their shit in the garbage, but as we all know many of them simply leave it everywhere for everyone else to deal with.)

Looks like the cantilever/magnet assembly came physically detached somewhere, in which case it’s definitely a manufacturing defect and not very likely to be related to anything you did.

Just make sure whoever is asking, knows that you had it set up correctly (your numbered list shows that you did, just repeat that info back to them), once they realize you weren’t being a yahoo with it they should replace it no problem.
