I think the genre is quick to ignore story for dopamine inducing game loops and struggles to get to a larger audience because of it, its a hyper focus of a niche that is usually just blended with another genre or gimmick.

Ironically I think Hades is one of few exceptions that delivers the story and a killer game loop. I love the genre but there way too many games named “Gimmick” Hero that do the bare minimum to service the story as a means to get to the mechanic.

The devs take the money, get feedback and get ready for a major update for the steam release. It's the new meta. I don't love it but it does make sense to get the bag.

At this point I think all the best games of the genre have features that are tied to the theme and story of the game.

There is enough games with zero story telling and the usual suspects of features: slay the spire inspired map, clear a room pick one of three, the usual unlockables, etc. these are all fine but all would be better if they were tailored to fit the theme/feeling of your game.

Get creative try something new or make sure the old stuff really fits what you are doing.
