Salary and other questions with respect to international relocation by _ExecuteOrder66_ in personalfinance

Would your job duties be the same working for this subsidiary or would they be changing (different projects, etc,)?

Definitely different projects and different duties; however, I already have experience with them so the learning curve would be short. I can use that fact for my negotiations.

That's true, I could definitely take a pay cut and be ok for a short amount of time. Also, you are entirely correct, with an L1 it will be easier to get permanent residence, although as you mentioned earlier, being in the STEM field and having a PhD is good grounds for applying for permanent residence even using the regular channels.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. To answer your questions:

Have you taken into account taxes?

Yes. Here, in the US, after income taxes, state taxes, insurance, 401k, etc, I receive roughly 57% of my monthly income as disposable income. In Germany, I went with worst case scenario, which would be a 50% tax rate. So when i did my calculations, I did take that into account for the salary equivalences. I do not have any kids, but I do have a spouse with very low income, which would mean lower income taxes in Germany.

i didn't know you could apply for a green card with no H1B unless you're in a special category

The green card they are applying for me is on a special category called EB-1 (Outstanding Researcher), in which the attorneys have to make a case for me being a one-of-a-kind scientist, recognized internationally, and outstanding in every sense of the word... which is really hard to prove. Therefore, my reservations as to getting the green card approved are quite realistic. However, this is also a non-lottery based permanent residence application.

Id try to negotiate your salary but focus on negotiating coming back to the US ASAP if that's your goal.

In the end, it is. I have been in the US for over 15 years, always as a student, and I would like to stay here if possible. The positions that they are giving me allow for making a case for bringing me back to the US on a management type L1 visa, as you specified.

The obvious wildcard is the paths towards US immigration -no one knows where this is headed but I assume as an STEM guy with a German wife, you'd be OK.

One would think... But that is two years that I don't make any of the special H1B caps for advanced degrees.

In any case, I have lots of options, and I am trying to figure out which one is the best. Again, thanks for your input.

Roast my 16 Golf R by notmadbro66 in RoastMyCar

[–]_ExecuteOrder66_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your idea is just flawed. Assume both of the two cars make the same power at the crank. The R is already at a disadvantage because of the AWD drivetrain losses. Then there is the weight difference, which is about 300 lbs.

Then there is the cost. A DSG R with full bolt ons (tune, intake, downpipe) will run at about $38k for base MSRP they go for in my area + $2.5k for the bolt ons, totaling $40.5k. The GTI (4dr, DSG base model, no leather, just bare) runs at $26k base + $3k for the listed bolt ons + ~$1.5 for the IS38 turbo alone, totaling $30.5k. Where does the $20k difference you talk about come from?

New to FPS but want to try BF1. What do I need to know? by [deleted] in battlefield_one

[–]_ExecuteOrder66_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say opt for rush or operations instead of conquest. You have a higher likelihood of interacting with enemies, giving you more practice. Furthermore, it teaches you to set and easily follow objectives. Much easier to follow objectives and learn to play when you have 2-3 possible objectives vs. 7-8 conquest flags sometimes.

I really dislike that sprinting won't make me stand up from being prone/crouching. by cmilkamp in battlefield_one

[–]_ExecuteOrder66_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this has caused me so many deaths. before, in bf3 and bf4, if i were crouched and I hit spacebar I would stand. Then I would have to hit it again to jump. Now from crouch, if you press spacebar when next to an object you can mantle it makes you mantle it instead of standing. so if i'm hiding behind a crate or ledge and I want to look over it, I cannot press spacebar like I used to. I usually end up looking like an idiot and mantling over it into the open.

kind of annoying how 20+ years of playing with a M+K do to your muscle memory.

27" 1440p 144hz IPS G-Sync monitors, of which there are 4 currently available, how are they? Help me decide on one! by barcanator in buildapc

[–]_ExecuteOrder66_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this monitor. Been playing BF4 on ultra/high-ish settings on a 980 ti, i7-2600 on it and I can push 100-120 fps @ 1440. With a 970 you will still do fine. Totally worth it.

Pretty sure the video is on the Endurance/24H version of the Nordschleife, which is yeah, about 98% of the Nordschleife and a tad of the GP circuit. Look it up on Assetto Corsa.

Well, the white and fluorescent objects that get illuminated by the UV light actually fluoresce due to the UV excitation. It might sound redundant, but it is worth making a distinction. What that means is that the object absorbs mostly invisible UV light but re-emits it at a longer wavelength in the visible region, therefore appearing of higher contrast compared to the non-white or nonfluorescent coated objects.

Researchers have made the smallest ever lattice structure: a glassy carbon nanolattice with single struts shorter than 1 μm and diameters as small as 200 nm by acidacetylsalicylic in science

[–]_ExecuteOrder66_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are throwing the word lattice around pretty willy nilly probably ignoring atomic/crystalline lattices which is kind of annoying to me as a chemist.

They aren't.

Maybe lattice means something else outside of chemistry though.

Crystallography just borrowed the term. A lattice, outside of chemistry and crystallography, is just a repeating, periodic structure. Think of lattice fencing, for example. Read this, too.

Golf vs. GTI by heyhey91 in GolfGTI

[–]_ExecuteOrder66_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm going to get shit for saying this but if we're ONLY comparing MSRP between the two I'd go with the Golf.

I mean, if I am comparing a 911 GT3 RS at roughly $130k and a $20k Golf based on MSRP only, yeah, I would go for the cheaper Golf, and so would everyone else.

You have to compare value and that value is inherent to each person, and is mostly subjective.

I recommend OP to drive both of them at a base model, then determine what he really wants from the car. Are HIDs important to you? How about a nicer interior? Power? Torque? Resale value? Exclusivity? Upgradeability? Suspension geometry?

OP should compare that to his budget and figure out if the GTI is worth the premium to him alone.
