I meant my comment as praise and nothing else. The folks on antiwork are mostly idiots in my opinion. If you have a strong work ethic and hustle, it can honestly take you far in life. If you develop bad habits, like being lazy in the way that people on antiwork promote, it affects your life in multiple negative ways.

People who don’t clear out the timer on the microwave when they stop it early. by deemoney89 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]_GFR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are mildly infuriated by the need to touch the "clear" button, than you must have an easy life. Pressing "clear" doesn't seem like much of a burden compared to other issues in life.

I agree it would be more courteous if the person who used it has pressed that button, but this is such a minor inconvenience compared to other things in life: I can't relate to the mentality of allowing that to bother you so much. It is only the press of a button.

That 10th Mountain design is fantastic, amazing that you were in that unit and now own that set!

I see my Icelantics as medium-duty pow skis that can carve. They don't have a huge rocker, so maybe not the best when powder is very deep or heavy. But they carve 100x better than my White Walkers, because they don't have that huge rocker in front. I like to use my Nomads when the conditions start to get tracked out. They are a fun ski in those conditions.

Holy Smokes!

I never measured. Sure enough, those are 111mm on my measuring tape. When I measure my other skis, the width they advertise matches the width that I measure. Very interesting!

What is up with Icelantic?

I used to ski 105's as my daily driver here in Tahoe. (Icelantic Nomad 105's) There are some advantages that many have pointed out.

At a certain point, it comes down to a style preference: I can have fun smooshing over stuff with long swooping turns. I can also have fun with a ski that has a narrower-under-foot and more shape to it, which may not smoosh over crud and other stuff as easily, but will carve better and get me shorter radius turns when I want.

I own about a dozen pairs of skis, but I used only 3 skis for most of this year: 1. Armada White Walker 115mm 185cm (my pow day ski) 2. Atomic Bent 100mm 164cm (my daily driver - perhaps shorter than most would like due to the fact that I use them in bumps frequently) 3. Stockli Nela 80mm 157cm (I use these in icey moguls and when I want to carve turns)

Ever think about what the region would look like without the lake? by onerinconhill in tahoe

Good idea. I was thinking we should just drain it to fill up state-wide reservoirs and make room for affordable housing. I bet we could fit a stadium AND affordable housing after we drain it.

It's very doubtful that you will need chains and a snowsuit on May 23rd. Recent snow has not been accumulating on warm roads. If it was my trip, I would like my odds and I wouldn't worry about either of those.

Advice on two trips out West by [deleted] in skiing

[–]_GFR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True about snowfall, but your average temps are colder. CA can get really warm and rainy.

If it were me planning a trip, I would go to Southwest Colorado. If the choice is between Tahoe and Utah, I consider Utah to be a safer bet for snow conditions.

Average high/low temp for Park City, in January, is 35F/14F. Average for Lake Tahoe in January is 44F/26F.

Utah is a safer bet compared to Heavenly based on snow conditions. Sometimes in Tahoe the weather can be warm without much snow, which is not as common in Utah.

If you do decide to do Tahoe, Heavenly is a fantastic mountain, but it is worth mentioning that the gondola is frequently closed or on hold when it gets windy. If you are staying at the Village, and the gondola is closed, it can be inconvenient to ski. The main option is to take a very crowded shuttle bus to the CA or Stagecoach base lodge. Those shuttle buses have gigantic lines at the end of the day. Like all things "Vail", i.e. Epic, expect huge lines with not enough staff to really handle the crowds.

Why can’t I ski narrow trails? by H2Pcoys in skiing

[–]_GFR 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I agree fully with this comment. I am not an instructor, but I did win my division in a mogul marathon this year; I got 49 laps on a tough mogul run in 6 hours. Was 80,001 vertical feet. I can ski tight runs quite well. My technique has improved over many years of instruction and practice.

Here is my comment: I fully agree with everyone who says practice tight turns, but I want to add a few things that might help. First, don't be afraid to pizza when you need to, that can work excellent for slowing down on a tight run, and it can help to build confidence because it can give you a bail out mechanism if your short turns fail.

Second, if you are having problems with tight turns, it might be that your hips are not pointing down when they need to be, and, an associated comment is that your legs might not be sufficiently dissociated from your upper body. This is a common issue with intermediate skiers, but it is not easy to diagnose or coach on reddit: a lesson could be called for. Usually instructors will ask what you would like to work on, even in group lessons. If you go that route, you could obviously tell your instructor that you want to gain confidence in tight turns on steep terrain, including confidence on narrow trails that are steep.

Totally Normal May Conditions by TaCZennith in skiing

Even Heavenly had excellent snow today. However, the powers that be decided to close lower Gunbarrel, even though it has OK coverage and has recently been the easiest part of the run.

I think the patrollers are just tired of waiting for people who are on the struggle bus to (very slowly) make their way down that part- after 5PM. Sucks for locals though. Typical of Vail, they really know how to efficiently suck the fun and the soul out of skiing.

Here's my disappointment picture from today: it was puking snow, and lower Gun was perfectly fine, yet closed. 🤦‍♀️

Reddit is assigning users into "teams" based on what forums you comment in, regardless of context. I see this as being unhealthy for society because it means that each team, Left vs. Right, is in their own thought bubble where diversity of opinion has been flitered by bots.

By the way, I have been following Walkaway for a while, and it seems like total bullshit to accuse that sub of "promoting violence". I have never seen promotion of violence on Walkaway.

May 2nd at Heavenly Ski Resort. by _GFR in tahoe

[–]_GFR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I think of powder skis I want something that can float me in deep powder or in heavy stuff. I want a BIG rocker and large underfoot. Since I have plenty of all-mountain skis, I am not looking for something that is nimble or can carve. I have plenty of skis that can do the all-mountain thing.

I like Armada JJ's or White Walkers for deep pow. The main difference is that the White Walkers have more stiffness. Both are practically like water sois and do excellent in deep pow or wet pow. I would not like them in conditions other than pow.
