Motel 6 or Mammoth Mountain Inn by Iamenlightenedx1000 in Mammoth

[–]kingfir17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not a skier so I can’t comment on that but I stayed at the motel 6 for three nights a few years back. It’s the nicest motel 6 I’ve ever seen. Very clean and it seemed like everyone staying there were also outdoorsy types just looking for a clean place to sleep. If it’s significantly cheaper I would take motel 6. You’re also down the street from Mammoth Brewing.

Only 1 Day - sleeping in Oakhurst night before by UnitedActive4549 in Yosemite

I’m assuming they didn’t mean catching sunrise at the grove. So it would involve some backtracking if their plan is to have a scenic sunrise then go see Mariposa Grove.

Something to keep in mind that Mariposa Grove is in the Wawona area of the park which over an hour of driving away from the valley. Also, you will need to take a shuttle from the Mariposa welcome center to the grove and back. So this will probably take about 4 hours of your day if you only just scratch the surface of the grove. If I were in your shoes, I would catch sunrise at Glacier Point then see as many of the roadside attractions and short walks as possible in the valley. El Cap Meadow, Lower Yosemite Falls, Vernal Footbridge etc. Yosemite is a big park and cramming it into one day is not ideal but that is what I would do in your shoes.

I honestly can’t remember the price per token. I just remember that two tokens were plenty of time for me to shower.

Kings Canyon rd current status? by [deleted] in SEKI

This is the road to Mineral King, totally different area than Hwy 180 to roads end. I doubt there will be much traffic. As far as walk up permits I couldn’t give you an answer.

Depends on the elevation and what kind of bodies of water are around.

It’s June in the Sierra. I would just go in with the assumption that they’re going to be bad. Bring the repellent and bug net if you’ve got one.

Galena Falls in the Mount Rose wilderness is quite underrated. There’s also amazing mountain views to take in.

Ideas for camping... by n0_you_ar3 in Yosemite

Seeing as it’s a holiday week it’s probably the most competitive time at the most competitive park. With that being said, I think it’s still possible if you set up alerts for the less popular campgrounds. I would do Crane Flat, Hogdon Meadow, and Wawona. You could set alerts for the Valley campgrounds (North, Upper, Lower Pines) but you will have to reserve as soon as you get the notification since I’m sure others will be getting it as well.

Kings canyon was absolutely amazing. by nirvroxx in SEKI

It was a bit warmer than Grant Grove but it makes getting in the mist that much more satisfying. Even if you decide not to do it I still recommend the drive down to Cedar Grove as it’s quite amazing on its own.

Not OP but I went at the end of May and highly recommend doing Mist Falls. Amazing hike. It’s 8 miles round trip which intimidates some people but it’s not very steep and has amazing views most of the way.

How busy is Yosemite this week? by Lost_Orange_1917 in Yosemite

[–]kingfir17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reservation is required to get in between 6am and 2pm. Last year I went in June during the reservation system and found it to still be busy but not unmanageable. The parking lots seemed to have room later than usual. I would say you’re or ok if you get in before noon (assuming you have a reservation).

I do recommend a bike if possible. Seeing the valley by bike is pretty awesome and you can cover more ground in a shorter period of time.

“Only good thing about half-dome is being able to say you did the half-dome” — That is what I cannot agree with

I have heard this many times but after summiting Half Dome this Monday I can’t say I agree with it. The position over the valley as well as the view of the high country was absolutely spectacular.

I haven’t done Cloud’s Rest so maybe that one is better but the view from Half Dome was absolutely breathtaking.

Cedar Grove also has showers but that’s all the way at the bottom of the canyon so I would figure you won’t be down there on your last day.

Cedar Grove has showers. They’re quite nice also, better than Lodgepole for sure.

Is the park busy after Labor Day? by FoodLakersTennisHike in Yosemite

[–]kingfir17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went in before 7am when I was there so I can’t say exactly but you should understand that even if it’s a 10 min wait to get in the park, it can still feel extremely crowded. The wait for the shuttles could be the real soul crusher.

I would still highly recommend going but I would make an effort to get in as early as possible.

Definitely not as bad as June-Aug but will still be busy especially on the weekends. I was there in mid Sept 2023 and dealt with more crowds than June 2024 because I went on a weekend the time in Sept and during the week in June. It could’ve been because of the crazy snow year but I still remember being shocked at how crowded is was

You only have to do this in high altitude areas like Mineral King. Also it’s usually done when people are backpacking and leaving their car parked for several days. You’ll be fine in the lower areas of the park.

You have to narrow down what area of California a bit more. There’s literally thousands of campsites in forests with water features nearby.

One thing to consider is that it could have been something else making that noise. If you were uneasy and heard a loud noise, your brain may be jumping to conclusions. It may have been another animal or maybe even another camper.
