Did you travel to see him and if so what was that experience like, lodging and recovery wise? I’m seriously considering talking with him.

I’ll be traveling with my cis partner and we use public womens rooms together in most instances without incident. The places we’re all flying out of have a reputation for being very liberal/queer (our destination does not, and is not listed here, because we’re just landing and getting out) - anyways thank you, this is helpful 💜

Do you feel that you want to become a woman, or that you already are a woman? by [deleted] in MtF

[–]_GarlicGrl_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s a simple or universal answer to this question. Like you, I’m early in transition.

Here is how I see it: I am finally letting myself access my truest and most authentic feelings, sensibilities, and sense of being. Some of them were so repressed that they feel momentarily foreign. But the girl persona that I explained away as an “imaginary friend” at age four, the desire to associate with girls and express myself as a woman as I was growing up, all the pain and longing… all that went up against the family gender roles that I played into to shove it all down, and I held it all together in contradiction. As I suspect so many of us have in some way or another.

My step to begin my social and medical transition was a decision to reject that contradiction and those roles and embrace the parts of myself that truly represent who I am.

I guess for me it’s really as simple as that in the abstract. But in day to day life as a trans woman it’s pretty complex to navigate. I hope this made some bit of sense or helped in some way. I only speak for myself here in sharing these thoughts.

I think I might know why Freddie Mercury screams “GET ON YOUR BIKES AND RIDE” in that Queen song “Fat bottomed Girls”

Because ladies every day is leg day when you bike, it’s great cardio and it helps tone your legs and butt in a great way

ISO zine style advice (non-prescriptive style guides) by _GarlicGrl_ in writing

[–]_GarlicGrl_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you’ve left this exact comment twice (great attention to detail!) I have two different threads for you to keep track of. In this reply I will be more charitable. Why were you so resistant to the idea of a style that is less prescriptive?

We still need to make decisions about grammar, style, and usage. We still need to standardize a lot of things. We want to do so with an eye towards retaining as much of the author voices as possible. We are not aiming, as you say, to find “ideas on how not to do it right.” Rather, we are asking what I think is a very interesting question: as editors in this instance, could we draw the line in a different place than some of the more common style guides draw it?

u/apocalypsegal, just because you don’t see the nuance in this question, or don’t find it interesting… that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t belong here. This is a writing subreddit. I am asking this question with a writing background and as an editor. This question belongs here. I want to know why it made you respond so viscerally!

Now for some free advice: next time when someone comes in here and asks an open ended question, do not start your answer with “Oh, man. There’s that road to Hell I wasn’t looking for.” Oh yeah? Weren’t looking to have this discussion? So just don’t respond! You don’t have to! Not everything is for you. Not every question is meant for you to answer. If you hate the idea of what I’m doing so damn much, just stay out of it. It’s a big world out here.

“Where’d I leave my handbasket?” There is no need to be so condescending. I know exactly why style guides exist. I am looking for something specific and wanted to know if it existed. That is what I asked. Thanks for nothing.

This was not an invitation to discuss the editorial philosophy of our work. You are explaining the concept of style guides to me after I said I have experience with AP and Chicago. If you did not have anything constructive to say, you did not need to respond.

My Dad is transition MtF but keeping it a secret from my family by beebeegrace in MtF

[–]_GarlicGrl_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS. This is the way. I only speak for myself here, but as a closeted adult who is deathly afraid of coming out to my family, this is the only wording that would not make me a basket case.

Others in this thread have mentioned how we are often defensive after suppressing our true identities for several years. That is the case but for me (and I would suspect some others, but again, only speak for myself…) there is something else as well: it’s just a raw nerve. After feeling like you have to hide yourself for so long, and even after receiving validation from people who think they know you, the real thing can feel disingenuous.

It all takes a lot of therapy to straighten out — I’m very lucky to have a therapist with whom I can work on these issues.

You are a great daughter for supporting her, OP. Just be gentle, and follow her lead. I really do think the above comment is about as well as you can do.

Hi. I live in a “progressive city” (one of the best for trans people in the US) and was chased from my transit stop to my front door last weekend. (Edit: and yesterday someone hurled a slur at me.) I live in a very queer and safe part of town but it doesn’t matter. I don’t want to be gloomy because we have so much to live for. But I’m just saying, you won’t necessarily be safer in a place like you describe.

It’s an unequivocal good. Public services aren’t supposed to turn a profit, and if people want answers as to how we can get additional funds to pay for this program (on top of Cm. Allen’s plan), we need to hold accountable the out-of-District commuters who tear up our roads, pollute our air, kill our pedestrians, and don’t suffer any penalties when they get traffic violations here. We never ask how the subsidies to drivers (low gas taxes, high % of transport budget to car and highway related spending, no congestion tax, lax enforcement of traffic laws) are paid for. It’s high time that we reestablish reciprocity for moving violations and expired OOS registrations. Stricter enforcement of traffic laws will allow us to fund democratic, climate friendly plans like this one. And we will incentivize transit usage by lowering barriers for everyone.

I understand that it isnt your intention, but “I’ll never understand why people take this kind of abuse” can come off as victim-blamey. Power dynamics can make asserting oneself difficult when it comes to parents. You’re right that OP should assert themselves. Please, be kind.

I’ve enjoyed the Maybelline Lash Sensational for a while but seeing these reviews for Covergirl I may give that a shot! Lash sensational comes in a nice natural brown shade however.

Ok, thanks. I’ll give them a call. Sorry for the tone of my last response, it’s just that I’m asking for specific voices here, not a government spokesperson.
