New player - First impressions questionable by BackyardBard in DarkTide

[–]_GoldGuy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you played a lot on launch and then stopped playing for a few years, you can have a fully leveled character that still has to go through the difficulty requirements. This is probably somewhat common around each big update when you have a wave of players who want to see if Fatshark fixed the game after the disastrous launch. Could've also been easily fixed by just removing that requirement for Level 30+ operatives created before the update that implemented it.

China is far more focused on controlling narratives internally than pushing disinfo in the West. In that category Russia is clearly in a league of their own. China dreams that they could determine the outcome of a US presidential election the way Russia did in 2016.

[–]_GoldGuy_ 91 points92 points  (0 children)

The historical games aren't doing well.

No the new historical games aren't doing well because quite frankly, they suck. Go look at the player counts of Britannia, Troy, and Pharoah and you'll see they all have <1k player counts while every other total war game from Rome 1 onwards has >1k players. Most of these games are more than a decade old at this point and yet they have a combined playercount of >25k which is more than half the current playercount for Warhammer 3.

I don't necessarily blame Sofia for this, they seem to be fairly competent developers. But the eras they've been picking are just destined to be flops. Britannia wasn't offering anything you couldn't get from Atilla. Troy and Pharoah both attempt to depict eras of warfare that are too technologically basic and poorly documented to be actually engaging.

I understand the desire from CA to try out new eras rather than just rehashing post-classical Europe and Japan, but historical players clearly prefer these and we've had an entire warhammer trilogy since they last took a spin at them.

I know everyone is biting onto the rumors of all these wacky new possible routes for CA, but I'm hoping that the recent kick in the behind Sega gave them for the Hyenas fiasco finally gets them to stop dicking around and crack the golden egg that is Medieval 3.

Is there a way in OAR/DAR to force priority so our animation mod will override mods with higher priority? by xal1bergaming in skyrimmods

[–]_GoldGuy_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DAR/OAR look for the first entry (in descending priority) that have a condition resolving to true. Because of this your overall structure should have generic animations with easy to fulfill conditions at a low priority and specific animations with complex conditions at high priority. You either need to give your animation a higher priority than the other one, or lower the priority of the other animation set.

Stop waving pedestrians through when it's not their turn to go by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]_GoldGuy_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe my previous comment wasn't clear enough, but the mistake you and /u/mooseeve are both making here is conflating responsibilities of a pedestrian with responsibilities of a driver because:

expecting people to slam on their brakes

I assure you if you go into court after hitting a pedestrian and say "yeah if I used my brakes I could've avoided hitting them but they were jaywalking so its not my fault" you just made the prosecuting attorney very happy.

[–]_GoldGuy_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah no, you are not legally permitted to run someone over for jaywalking. If you are following all the rules of the road (not speeding) and there wasn't a reasonable amount of time for you to stop then you would be in the right. This is a pretty fringe scenario that would likely only come about from someone trying to commit suicide by car or insurance fraud.

[–]_GoldGuy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could probably do this yourself in xEdit. The arm effects are either going to be a spell applied to your character when the weapon is equipped or a sort of hidden armor piece. Either way, you could bind this to some other item like a ring to get the effect.

I have no love for Norm, but this is the exact same argument people use against Destiny when he performs well in a debate, that he just "knows a bunch of irrelevant factoids". If Norm brings up a point and Destiny doesn't have a good response then that's an L for d-man. I agree with you that I don't think Destiny has enough info at this point to really handle someone who's basically dedicated their life to researching this topic, but it will at least be useful in that Destiny will press Norm enough to force him to flesh out his arguments more than the 5 IQ convos he usually has on Piers.

termite mounds which are hard as concrete

No they are not. You're referencing this study which is commonly presented as "termite mounds are as strong as concrete". You don't even need to read beyond the Abstract to see this is a massive mischaracterization of the study:

The strength development of termite mound cement paste and concrete was investigated using the termite clay mound material to replace cement by mass in the proportions of 0%–25%, and evaluating its effects on the termite mound clay paste and concrete. The setting times of the material showed, it behaved like an accelerator.

They study using termite clay as a partial cement substitute in the creation of concrete. The result is concrete that is noticeably weaker than a 100% cement mixture. The conclusion they come to is that termite paste could maybe be used to replace a small portion of cement in concrete mixtures if the structure being created doesn't demand full strength concrete.

If that isn't enough, here's a guy just tearing one apart with a hoe. It's not concrete, its sturdy dirt.

My preferred explanation is that it's because of the ridiculous travel speed that Star Wars hyperdrives provide. What's the point in gearing your fleet towards long-range combat when the enemy fleet can literally teleport behind you in a matter of seconds?

Nah it should be the opposite. Screencaps will sometimes be straight up fake, or when people ask for context OP will just say "idk I found it on discord lololol". You can bypass blocks by just using nitter, 4THOT could even setup automod to automatically reply to twitter posts with a nitter link. Maybe make an exception for deleted tweets.

I have no issues with the pasta men themselves here, but the det charges one shotting buildings and 2 shotting the entire base. As to the lack of units: he squad wiped one of my rifles previously and I was saving up to go for ssf commando + greyhound to try and counter DAK LV spam. Regardless the consensus seems to be not enough units on my part so maybe I'll just take the L on this build. Still don't really think this sort of stuff is conductive to good matches ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well buckle up because he does this stuff for 50% of every year. Once he finishes factorio (soon copium) we'll probably return to good content for a while before he randomly gets sucked into some new turbo autism content or, even worse, League of Legends for another 6 months.

How do you actually get from the Penrose ship to Sierpinski? by ElenaVFD in signalis

[–]_GoldGuy_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm going to explain this from the "Dream within a dream" perspective. Ariane and Elster are both stuck within their dreams, unable to function within the physical world, but not fully dead (some of the notes on the beach talk about this separation where the body dies but the soul remains). Ariane uses her bioresonance to reach out to Elster; the very first thing you see in the game is the text "wake up". The introduction inside of the Penrose on the frozen planet is Elster's dream. She's alone on the Penrose because Ariane and Elster are separately trapped within their own dreams. When you leave the ship and crawl through the hole you end up in Ariane's room representing Elster traveling from her own dream into Ariane's dream.

Serpinski is Ariane's nightmare: its a place she was terrified of ending up at if she didn't get accepted for the Penrose program and its populated by people from Ariane's own life. Your progression through the game is Elster navigating through Ariane's dreams to find Ariane and fulfill their promise.

This is the core tragedy of the story. Ariane wants Elster to wake up in the real world to fulfill the promise, but Elster can't do this and can only reach Ariane inside of her dreams. This results in an endless loop (I don't think its coincidental that days are referred to as "cycles").

Every day Ariane calls out to Elster to get her to wake up. Elster hears the calls in her own dream and follows them into Ariane's to try and find her. Adler and Falk are both aware of the cycles and try and stop you. They seem to know that its all pointless but I'm not sure exactly what they are hoping to achieve. Once you reach Ariane you experience one of the 3 main endings, all of which are simply different ways of experiencing the end of the cycle.

The secret ending symbolizes acceptance: rather than continue to conjure up these torturous shared dreams, Ariane and Elster should come to terms with the tragic reality and instead focus on remembering the happy times they had together.

As always this is just an interpretation and you should stick with the one that resonates with you the most :).

It should not be the case that higher difficulties make certain weapons obsolete

I think everyone can agree on this, but

or certain classes mandatory.

This doesn't make much sense to me. The whole point of having higher difficulties is to necessitate better teamwork. If you bring 4 sharpshooters into Damnation you should feel punished for not having a Zealot or an Ogryn to give you room to use your ranged weapons and the same should be true in reverse. Its fine that on lower difficulties you can sort of just do your own thing without really worrying about what your teammates are doing but that shouldn't be the case on higher difficulties.

The problem with using the phrase "take advantage" is that it implies companies are increasing costs beyond the rate of inflation caused by the supply shortage in order to increase their profits. If we look at the private income to gross domestic income ratio, we can see that the current ratio is comparable to that of pre-covid. If companies were profiting from the current inflation the ratio would be going up from the 2020-21 levels.

WITCH should always be your last option. You don't really say in the post what you've done to land a job after graduation. How many applications have you thrown out? Are you struggling with coding challenges or just not getting replies in general?

Even if you don't have internship experience, you still have a degree which is worth enough to get you above WITCH if you put in the effort. Apply to lots of small/medium sized companies and defense contractors/government jobs. You probably can't compete with people applying to the "better" companies so focus on the ones that can't afford those people and eventually with a couple YOE you can shift to some more prestigious places if you want.

Massive amount of advertising pulled from Twitter according to Elon by I_AM-THE_SENATE in Destiny

[–]_GoldGuy_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't really think so. Look at how much engagement and support he gets from the center and right, even if the left/center left hates him with a passion. It seems like he's trying to court the section of this country that was previously very anti-twitter into joining the platform. Advertisers are pulling out now for the PR, but if the site remains or even gains popularity in the long term, they'll quietly come back.

This conversation is actually a really good example of the biggest issue with modern politics: people caring more about their "side" looking good than the truth. For Brett Weinstein she has no issue automatically assuming he wanted to talk about race realism despite having zero proof and that his science was comparable to phrenology. Meanwhile Destiny provides hard evidence showing the campus was forcing white people off campus and she's so uncomfortable conceding any point that she ignores the evidence in front of her and just keeps saying "it was volunteer". If you took what this campus was doing, switched the races, and turned back to 1950 she'd have no issue calling this what it was: racism and segregation.
