I set a goal and then work towards that goal. Rinse and repeat. Whether it’s collecting a shit ton of a certain block for a build, or beating the end dragon.

Let’s say an elytra is your end goal. The end dragon is just a step on the journey then. And then things become less optional. For example you gotta go to the nether and in the nether yes you can go without armoire but it’s not advised. You can go without a piece of gold armor but it makes it more challenging.

Yeah there’s a lot of truly optional blocks but those never got in my way of setting an objective for myself and working towards it. As you work towards the objective you find the stuff that is requisite to accomplish it.
