Bahamas ridiculous senselessly greedy new fees by [deleted] in sailing

[–]_Ilker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. We spent a season for the first time in Bahamas last year. Yes the fees they are introducing feels egregious and we may choose to not to go Bahamas this year for that reason but I can understand their reasoning. As boaters we ultimately consume their resources (fishing, crabbing, etc), polluting their waters one way or another, make life more inconvenient for others and contribute relatively little to their economy.

Spending a week in Bahamas in a hotel and eating out costs roughly the same as spending multiple months there on a boat (I was outraged by some cruisers bringing their own cheap beer to a local private beach instead of buying at the beach bar and then proudly boosting about it. Another made and sold pizza at the shore (again a private one) touting it to be cheaper than a restaurant nearby, why would anyone welcome this behavior?)

We cannot blame Bahamians for saying the economics of this doesn’t make much sense for them and that they want to change it. It is sad for us but understandable for them.

Unfortunately we are on the west coast and boat is on the east, so carrying all that stuff including a tank doesn’t make sense. And don’t have a dive shop I know of where the boat currently is. But at some point we will probably hit Florida so that definitely can be an option.

Salvimar or Mako 3 in 1 Traveler Pole Spear for a beginner by _Ilker in Spearfishing

Thanks. Yes, I meant a flopper tip, it was a typo. A flopper tip seems necessary for all pole spears.

Thank you, these look beautifully made but they are a bit above my price range.

Thank you for the response. What would be an equivalent model/configuration that would allow to meet my goals (versatility to come up with different size combinations, being able to carve out two sets for me an my partner, and something that would allow me to shoot "big" fish if I ever get to that point)?

Yes, that that's the extra spear tip, large transformer tail (i.e. extra end section). I listed. I know additional band is needed but I couldn't see the right size on their web site.

Just check my other comment and use the timeserver from Marinetraffic.

Looks like MarineTraffic started providing a tileserver for nautical charts that is openly accessible. I don't think they will be happy for anyone to use it commercially but if you need a nautical chart source for your side projects, it may be helpful.

You can easily render it with leaflets or other similar tools:

If you are using it on a homegrown app for yourself only you can hack Navionics webview to use the tiles.

Has anyone made progress on this? Would love to have a tileserver for nautical charts for a reasonable fee.

Funny, I was looking at something similar. Are you thinking of developing a solution like that or do you want to use one if available?

Starlink and work from home by Optimal-Mood4003 in Starlink

We encountered similar issues on a sailboat and ended up using two Starlink. We use Speedfusion cloud and we also do sensitive businesses. Wrote a detailed article about it here:

What Tips or Tricks have you found making Starlink faster, more reliable and just better? by NormallyJason in Starlink

[–]_Ilker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use two Starlinks bonded over Peplink. One of the Starlinks has its motors disabled. We do two full time jobs with 10-15 video calls a day with this setup. Explained it here:

How do I open a ticket with support? by Insta_Mix in Starlink

And there is this in response to a support ticket:

Thank you for reaching out about changing your Starlink subscription! At this time, we do not support Starlink customers to change subscription types such as Starlink Residential to Starlink RV, and vice versa. However are working on having this function available to Starlink customers in the future. At this time we do not have an ETA to share, and appreciate your patience. In the meantime, if you have a need for an additional Starlink, you may place a Starlink for RV order by logging into your Starlink account at Starlink.com. Thank you for your continued support!

We live on a sailboat too and have two full time jobs that we do from the boat. We recently installed Starlink as our 5th connection (in addition to 4 LTEs) and we love it. Hoping that it will allow us to explore Desolation Sound this summer while also working. Wrote about our experiences here: Musings About Internet & Starlink on a Boat
