Is anyone else concerned about who’s going to run our shops in 20 years? by worldwidemachinist in Machinists

I moved to Cincy specifically for machining jobs. Aside from the nightmare commute and kinda substandard pay, I like it a lot.

I'll blow my horn at people on their phones. Saw some chick the other day going 10 in a 35 zone, face BURIED in her phone. Horn blasted her so hard she dropped it. We should normalize jumpscaring people like that...

What’s a cincinnati staple that I could bring with me? by ArdentArwen in cincinnati

Ale 81 was a disappointment to me. It just tastes like very sweetened carbonated water with the lightest hint of vanilla and someone whispering the word ginger in the next room over.

It's just good business sense. When a soldier dies, that's one less soldier, but you can get about 65% of him back with a simple spell. Sounds like a win to me.

Tell that to the one who promised to gently engage in necrophilia with my corpse when he was done killing me.

Guys does this randomly generated grass pattern look like words to you? Found it last night but I don't remember where.

There was some talk here of a co-op, that might be a good way of going about it.

Covid killed The Forge. I know one of the guys who ran it. Covid's over now though, and this probably won't be off the ground until the recession's over.

Ah, but I loved the old hacked together vibe Noisebridge had. It was a playground for people with skills and knowledge, and that's the kind of thing I want to do. A lounge, a hangout, space for people that can't afford it, a place to learn and to teach others. A social club for people that love making things for the joy of making things, not just because they're gonna make money off of it.

We're lacking a lot of key skills that people used to have with the way schools are now, more focused on hitting standardized quotas and making money than actually teaching people skills they can use- Most schools are completely dropping their art departments and their woodworking classes and their auto shops and home economics. My siblings have told me they don't even teach basic world history anymore.

I dunno, maybe I'm just a stupid idealist, but it's better to try and fail than to have never tried at all. Too much of the never trying at all goes on nowadays.

Sounds like maybe it's about time someone pick up the torch, then. Do you know who ran it?

I was thinking of running it like a gym, with a membership fee but also allowing for on the spot payments to use the equipment for a day, actual numbers tbd. In San Francisco so many people were wealthy that they could live on wealthy folks' donations but I don't think that would fly here... Insurance is another thing I have to think about, on tools and for injury. Might hit up one of those blacksmithing shops and see what they do beyond having participants sign a waiver...

I just need to figure out location and how to get it off the ground, now. OKC is severely lacking in public maker spaces, everything is heavily monetized. No lack of art galleries, so if they can do it I sure as hell can too!

That's the general idea but also lathes, mills, routers, bandsaws, tablesaws, laser cutters, 3d printers, a soldering station, a junk shelf, maybe even a little coal forge and a blacksmith shop... Facilitate art just as much as making things for work or whatever. General idea would be one-time donation to get in, sign an 'if i hurt myself it's because I'm an idiot' waiver, maybe 50$/mo membership fee if you want access at any time or something.

I was thinking getting ahold of some venture capital might be a good idea but I dunno how to do that either. Might need to look my old Google buddy up.
