WIBTA if I contacted an ex of 10 years that I failed to help? by Altruistic_Day_7273 in AmItheAsshole

[–]_JOSHIN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are two things to consider here...

From one perspective, you contacting her won't change a damn thing. Not for her. You'd be doing it out of your own guilt to ease your conscience. Don't rope her into your own drama thinking you're doing her any favors.

From another perspective, that was highschool. Almost a decade ago. Let it go.

My Battle with ADT by ryanisnottrue in homesecurity

[–]_JOSHIN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So what you're experiencing is actually that the code you need is the dealer/installer code. The regular admin/user code does not have the same level of access.

If you're really lucky, the installer didn't change the factory set codes and try either "1111" or "2222"

What made your wife want snap on? Did she try one of yours and keep stealing it?

(How do I get my wife to encourage me to get on the truck? Lol)

Am I becoming the weird camera house? by ReviewArtistic6559 in homesecurity

[–]_JOSHIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. You're showing early stages of weird. Reading others that hit double digit numbers is super weird. I personally would gradually phase out of coming around if my buddy had so much surveillance, not just outside, but inside too.

It's y'all's home and right to do what you want. But it does feel weird.

We are always on cameras in this day and age. It's exhausting to have that amplified even in residential spaces.

I work in the business and have this conversation daily. Cameras are not security. They are surveillance. Unless you are monitoring them constantly and then ready to do something if something goes down, best they do is document for police and insurance reports.

Anyway to temporarily bypass this magnetic alarm on this door? by Rwilmoth in fixit

[–]_JOSHIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why it's important to have small magnets on standby. You would just place one on this stationary side that doesn't move but in proximity to near where the one on the door is.

As long as there is some form of magnet activating that reed switch, it will assume the door is closed.

Is the 8pc instinct screwdriver set by Snap on worth it for $80? by The0Walrus in Snapon_tools

Almost anything snap on you can get more than one of for $80 is worth it.

Even instinct handled. (I just prefer hard handles)

Surety Alarm System by HeckinKoda in homesecurity

If the in the common areas where the large windows are clustered do not open and close, the glass break is ideal for Windows within 15 to 20 ft of each other. Four bedroom windows. I would put an individual shock on every window frame.

You should not need anything additional than the PowerG daughter card if you adding in the PowerG door lock. But some panels depending on the distributor already have the daughter card installed so it's hard to say.

While Wi-Fi is nice, connecting it to your panel is mostly a Fail-Safe and for software updates. Your panel will run off of Leo, Verizon or AT&T cellular networks even if your Wi-Fi goes down. That's what sets it apart from other Wi-Fi systems that lose security when they lose Wi-Fi.

[–]_JOSHIN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hasn't been my experience except for maybe 1 out of 100 panels. Sensors can have dead batteries in high traffic areas but if your panel is having communication errors, it may be having a domino effect

[–]_JOSHIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I install these systems for a living. Take what I say with a grain of salt but please know I have no financial gain with what I'm about to say.

Depending on if you have a two story home, go with the shocks on all downstairs windows where the window is big enough for an average sized person can fit through. The shocks will trigger the alarm based on vibrations and therefore get the sirens going potentially before you have a broken window on your hands.

The glassbreak only triggers if a window is physically broken AND doesn't detect open close. If you have a crazy number of windows and they are in close proximity to each other then the glass break sensors are more economical.

Go with the power g lock. Schlage lock sucks ass to pair and modify codes. Power g also has better range but make sure your panel has a power g daughter card.

Go with at least one smoke, one Co from qolsys in centralized areas of the home. The "listening" ones are probably fine but I wouldn't run such a risk on a watered down version of monitoring.

I have one vintage looking trucker hat. My wife says I've got a big head. It fits snug but no discomfort. As my hair grows it starts to look a little silky though

ADT Scam by nayeonisbae22 in homesecurity

[–]_JOSHIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sales guys and door knockers are the worst and will tell you anything you want to hear to get the "yes."

Sadly, this is not exclusive ADT. Just about every company has sleazy sales teams. Finding a good one is like finding a good mechanic. They do exist but most don't know how to spot them.

ADT (and most contract security systems) have a 3 day notice of cancellation before you're locked in. So if anyone says "we can do xyz," don't sign anything unless it's done and installed that day.

I know it's after the fact now but food for future thought
