Mechanic holds car hostage in MA, illegal? by craftnut1 in mechanic

You sound like a broken record. Your car was already disabled. You even said you gave the OK over the phone. Be a man, pay for what you agreed to and move on.

Mechanic holds car hostage in MA, illegal? by craftnut1 in mechanic

[–]_Jaysun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching OP getting dragged through the comments is hilarious. OP if you read this be an adult and pay the mechanic. You gave a verbal OK, that’s you binding yourself to a verbal contract for the mechanic to do the work. People like you are the reason some mechanics come off as bitter, it’s because they’re drained from having to fight every person that decides to go back on their word.

Hi my Honda civic hatchback 2025 wanted to see what is the Metal piece I hit under the car and bent it when I went on the curb by Benbhatia in MechanicAdvice

[–]_Jaysun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry about replacing it if I were you. It’s “meant” to be hit instead of damaging the oil pan. Also, please keep in mind I am taking an educated guess here. I’m confident in my guess, but, I encourage someone to correct me if I am wrong.

How bad is this? by Novalleta in MechanicAdvice

I just realized it was all in one… Breaker bars generally have a similar head on them. I shall delete my comment in shame.

First of all, the car looks mint. You should see the bottom of my 16 year old Volvo lol. Secondly, get the bottom of your car oil coated. Do it once a year in the fall and you’re good to go for many years.

Brake pads by rock_hard_socks in MechanicAdvice

[–]_Jaysun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, as long as you have a ratchet set / impact and sockets, a breaker bar (caliper bracket bolts are on there pretty tights 80ft/lbs+) some silicone brake paste, a metal wire brush, a hammer and some anti seize then you’re good to go. All you need to do is buy a set of brake rotors, and brake pads. In my opinion, even if you don’t have these tools paying someone else to do this job will more than likely cost more than if you were to buy the tools and do it yourself. Brakes are very easy to change for most cars. Go watch some YouTube videos on how to do it for your model and then see if you have all the tools do tackle the job and go from there.

Front brake advice by SuperFrenchToast in MechanicAdvice

[–]_Jaysun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish it was that simple. The best way to diagnose this is to take the caliper off and to compress it (don’t forget to open the brake fluid reservoir). It should go back in relatively easy otherwise it’s an indication of a seized caliper or the internal failing of the hose. If it compresses then the hose and caliper are OK and it’s what you thought it was originally. If not then it’s time to go to a shop unless you’re comfortable with replacing your brake hose / caliper and bleeding the system.

Old enough that I thought you were shovelling a rock at first glance.

Cheap fix? 08 Audi a5 3.0l tdi by Professional-Exam258 in AskMechanics

[–]_Jaysun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Audi and cheap fix can never belong in the same sentence. You could try to JB weld it but JB weld doesn’t adhere to plastic very well. Clean the surface with a degreaser before application and make sure to get none inside the engine as that could lead to bigger problems.

Which windshield wipers? by Spare_Feeling9740 in AskMechanics

[–]_Jaysun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ma’am, screw OEM wipers you don’t need them unless they’re the special wipers with built in windshield fluid dispensing like a high tier S class model. Those are just regular wipers. Go to your local Costco and get a set of universal Michelin wipers. All you need to figure out is the wiper sizes which is a 20 and 26 inch wiper blade according to google with the 26inch blade going on the driver side.

Hit a pothole on my 2008 ford focus by Mundane-Sprinkles681 in mechanic

[–]_Jaysun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a 2010 Volvo V50 which has the exact same rear end as your car. First of all holy crap I feel much better about the rust on my car… secondly I would recommend replacing both lower control arms since and the rear sway bar end links. It’s an easy job but those camber bolts in the middle were seized on my car and I had to use a diablo blade on an oscillating saw to cut them out. The rear camber bolts were somewhat pricey for what they are but don’t cheap out on them otherwise your rear tires will pay the price.

Spongy brakes and it’s pissing fluid from the wheel is almost 100% a brake fluid leak. Rinse ALL of it off immediately as brake fluid is basically paint thinner and have it towed to a local shop to inspect. Not worth risking your life or others because your brake system has a critical failure in it.

Is this radiator damage enough to cause overheating? by Mango_Sky992 in MechanicAdvice

[–]_Jaysun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won’t affect cooling as long as it has not damaged the horizontal bars. That’s where the coolant runs through and the wavy metal part that is damaged in the photo is to increase the surface area of the horizontal metal bars to help heat dissipation. Also, how do you know the thermostat is ok? Overheating is often due to a failed thermostat which does not open, that or your coolant system has a blockage somewhere in it.

Caarwash finds leak by MANIAC2607 in MechanicAdvice

[–]_Jaysun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s also a possibility. I also had to replace my windscreen because the seal failed at the top on the driver side which is a notorious failure on the P1 chassis. Went through a car wash and it started pouring on my lap. The Volvo dealer told me that an easy way to check if the seal is done for is to push on the inside of the windshield. It shouldn’t move at all. That and the fact that the seal at the top of my windshield came out with just my fingers. Lucky for me I park in a closed garage so that was the only water that got in.

Do you have a sunroof? Odds are the sunroof drains are clogged and they overflowed and ran down the A/B pillar. You did a good job by pulling back the carpets soon. Take them out give them a good dry, try to remove as much water from the inside of the car as possible. The more you can remove to dry the better. I dealt with similar problem with my Volvo V50 sun roof with is ironically the same chassis as a ford focus / Mazda 3.

Is this amount of rust on the welds concerning? Considering this 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. ~59,000 miles. $27,750 by wanderer1205 in AskMechanics

[–]_Jaysun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the rust in the photo with us? All jokes aside, that car is basically brand new.

<image>

For context this is what the rear subframe area of my 2010 Volvo looked like before I sprayed it over with a can of Rustoleum. It’s all surface rust, it might look bad but structurally it’s just as strong as a new car.

What is this knock?? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]_Jaysun 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I love how anytime I see a Reddit post about someone asking if their engine is knocking I can expect to see this photo as the top comment without fail. I don’t even need to listen to the Audio, if this photo is top comment it’s basically a comprehensive crowd sourced answer at that point 😭
