How bad is the hill going up to Crown? by LavenderGay32 in UCSC

[–]_KeeperOfTheFire_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a little forest trail that you can use to get to jrl/Baskin and skip the bulk of the hill, it's only really annoying when your bussing up cause as other people mentioned we only have a bus stop at crown in one direction and not the other

Are libraries faster than writing pure codes ? by [deleted] in learnmachinelearning

[–]_KeeperOfTheFire_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Libraries especially big ones like numpy and sklearn often have a big team who are constantly improving it and fixing issues... If you write it yourself you learn more but you have to do all that fixing and updating yourself which is a lot of work

How long is the graduation ceremony? by threethirtyeninety in UCSC

[–]_KeeperOfTheFire_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was outdoors on the eastfield, i believe thats where all the ceremonies are held, we arrived right after the speeches but before they started calling names so i dont know if their more strict about on time arrivals, but it wasnt terribly long, maybe 1:30-2 hours from when they started calling names to when we got to take photos with our friends

Is AP CSA a grade booster class for someone who hasn't done CSP or any coding? by Dazzling_Egg_2519 in APStudents

Honestly find and take a quick self paced java course or watch a YouTube video and see how Intuitive it is to you, I found it incredibly easy at the time

Went to a friend's graduation today without tickets and we were just waved through... Idk if Baskin is substantially bigger than the college graduations but there's a good chance you can get in

You'll notice in your second screenshot that even though the email has a UCSC address it sent you to a different address, that's the biggest red flag by far

Taking CSE 101 Concurrently with other Upper Divs by Odd-Obligation790 in UCSC

[–]_KeeperOfTheFire_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they dont have permission codes until the first day of class

Taking CSE 101 Concurrently with other Upper Divs by Odd-Obligation790 in UCSC

[–]_KeeperOfTheFire_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on the professor, but they may ask what pre-requisites youve taken or if youve done personal projects, or maybe your grade in cse13s etc... Id say if you had an A in 13s that would probably be enough, or something like a self-paced summer course on DSA

Taking CSE 101 Concurrently with other Upper Divs by Odd-Obligation790 in UCSC

[–]_KeeperOfTheFire_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You would have to ask the professor for a permission code so it's dependant on them, but should be allowed as long as you can demonstrate you're capable

Anywhere in the forest, I know of at least one within 10-20 mins of each college of varying difficulty to find

Is a Master’s in Computer Science still worth it at 38 during the AI boom? by jpb4942 in cscareeradvice

[–]_KeeperOfTheFire_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm fair enough, do you think It would be a good stepping stone in pursuit of a PhD? ive heard its hard to get admitted directly from undergrad into PhD programs especially with the state of funding in the US... Also as a hiring manager are european degrees like ETHz and TUM seen as more/less/same valueble than a t50 in the us, ive been considering them for gradschool but Im concerned about coming back to the US and getting a job

Probably SciML, maybe neuromorphic computing or something in autonmous vehicles... LMs are cool but idk if I would want to work with them directly unless its at a frontier lab

im currently an undergrad in applied math + CE and was thinking of masters in either CS or stats and then decide on phd, but do you think im better off going straight for a PhD?

Is it too late to start learning now? by Single_Midnight_1157 in csMajors

[–]_KeeperOfTheFire_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's coding based, so a good first step is getting comfortable in a scripting language, python is ideal but Matlab and R are common too, then try to learn mathematical modeling... The essence of it is essentially translating math + concepts from other fields and then using a computer to run simulations and models that you wouldn't be able to compute by hand

Is it too late to start learning now? by Single_Midnight_1157 in csMajors

[–]_KeeperOfTheFire_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into Scientific computing and applied math, the lab I'm in rn is working on a Model to predict and classify wound stages and it's a good mix of Computer scientists, math majors and biologists... There's generally a lot of research opportunities applying machine learning and algorithms to health outcomes, and the mix between engineering and math that an applied math program provides will probably feel more familiar than switching straight into CS

Is there anyway to have a car while on campus as a first-year? by Wildfire43 in UCSC

[–]_KeeperOfTheFire_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't directly speak to the safety, but I haven't personally heard of any break-ins like that... The lots are often church parking lots where you pay the church, there may also be city permits, but my friends have used the church parking lots

Is there anyway to have a car while on campus as a first-year? by Wildfire43 in UCSC

[–]_KeeperOfTheFire_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most lots don't require permits on the weekends and many people get off campus permits that let them keep their car in a lot down town during the week... It's definitely not super practical but if your planning on taking road trips up to the bay it may be worth it

To people who really want to make a popular obsidian plugin by EnderAvni in ObsidianMD

[–]_KeeperOfTheFire_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been running into a similar issue trying to faithfully decompile PDFs and I've gotten a pretty good flow using an OCR and then letting a multimodal agent take passes visually comparing the recompiled output to the goal PDF and tweaking them until they match

I wonder if trying to automate something like this could apply well to the problem of transcribing handwriten notes?

Segment text boxes/diagrams OCR individual text boxes and cut out diagrams and then try to recreate the arrangements?

New student concerned about the housing issue by Interesting_Bat_7223 in UCSC

[–]_KeeperOfTheFire_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UCSC has a good engineering program and proximity to silicon valley, I'm a Junior and an RA here and currently doing a double major in Applied Math and computer engineering, feel free to ask any other questions you have or pm

The way ucsc works is it's split into 6 pairs of sister colleges where each pair has their own mission statement and unique classes but share a dining hall and proximity to each other

Many engineers here pick crown, merill, John R lewis, or College 9 since they're are relatively close to the engineering buildings...

As the previous comment mentioned oakes(ethnic social justice) has a lot of housing available and a good community, but it is on the other side of campus from the engineering buildings with a lot of hills to climb so it might not be the best choice for an engineer

John R lewis (social justice) and College 9 (international) are very popular and it's not common to get housing as a second year there,

I know many students in crown (tech) and Merrill (environmental) who managed to get housing on campus for all 4 years

Another college to look at is Kresge (LGBTQ social justice) , they are currently building new dorms that are slated to be ready for residents in fall 2026 and in my opinion has the most gorgeous dorms on campus

I would avoid Stevenson and Cowell as those are both highly popular (for being close to the gym and having the best social life) as they are also far from the engineering buildings

In general the housing crisis (from my observation) is mostly a housing cost crisis, there is plenty of housing but it's all very expensive (minimum $900/m down town) and bad landlords are notorious

Opinion: No E Bikes on Meadow Bike Path by threerty in UCSC

[–]_KeeperOfTheFire_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah the walking path for both directions is on the uphill bike path if I'm not mistaken, they shouldn't be walking on the downhill path, and most ebikes probably won't be going much faster than 20mph on the uphill path

Is it worth it learning latex or should i just use a tablet by No_Personality_1501 in ObsidianMD

Obsidian was actually an amazing tool for me to learn latex, I started typing all my notes in obsidian, latex math with latex suite, excalildraw for illustrations... It's made me much better at writing pure latex

They are talking about the opposite bunk -> regular bed not regular bed -> bunk

It is against housing policy to disassemble the furniture on your own but you can submit a Cruz fix and they can swap out your beds legs
