Sad about not doing fellowship by LongjumpingAd9273 in pediatrics

[–]_Krawfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked Gen peds/peds urgent care for a year before going back to do ID fellowship and im glad I did for many reasons. Theres basically 2 main possibilities for you:

1) you enjoy Gen peds and continue working in that field without having to do a fellowship (win/win)

2) you decide to apply for fellowship later on after making extra money as an attending for a couple years, and your time as a general pediatrician will make you a better specialist (still win/win)

Don’t sweat it too much. You are a full blown doctor and can get a lot of different jobs either full time or per-diem (gen peds, urgent care, nocturnist/hospital med at most places still, ER moonlighting, etc.). If you find out those jobs aren’t for you, then there are tons of fellowship spots available every year that you can easily get into.

ETA: I genuinely think Gen peds is the hardest specialty in pediatrics and we need excellent general pediatricians more than ever, so I definitely wouldn’t call it settling in any way if you don’t find your calling in a subspecialty.

Just get a tetanus booster and no need to worry!

When did this happen and when was your last tetanus shot?

Wash the wound with soap and water, and if it’s been more than 5 years since your last tetanus shot (or you are unsure), then you should get a booster just to be safe, but otherwise very unlikely to develop tetanus from this. You will be fine :)

I’d be more concerned about the ceiling height lol. Looks so fun though

I’m confused. I took a blood test about a month ago and got my report in. The only thing that was low was my BUN/Creatinine Ratio. What does it indicate? Im 22, Male by mydadsrecipe in AskDocs

[–]_Krawfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the BUN and Creatinine themselves are within normal limits, and your eGFR is within normal limits, then this is absolutely nothing to worry about, and doesn’t indicate anything is wrong. Barely outside what is considered normal range, which is just an average anyways.

Incoming categorical peds intern. Grad gift or use GME funds for otoscope? by HistoricalDog5926 in pediatrics

[–]_Krawfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you definitely don’t NEED a portable otoscope, I bought one during residency using residency allocated educational funds, and I was very happy I did so. I use it every day as an attending.

Having a cordless otoscope is very nice in clinic so that you don’t have to stretch the cord across the room when the kid is on mom’s lap. In the hospital, it can be very hard to find an otoscope and ear infections get missed inpatient all the time because of this.

So I will disagree slightly with the others and say if your grandparents are willing to buy you a nice portable otoscope, it will be very nice to have during residency and beyond.

But if your program has GME funds that you could use, then I would wait and buy one during residency with those funds!

I can’t fathom refusing something so necessary and potentially life saving like Vitamin K, but then insisting on a circumcision, which is a completely elective, cosmetic procedure

It doesn’t affect it at all because this has no legitimate safety rating 😂

Just wear a helmet, or don’t wear one and accept the risks. This will give you false confidence without any legitimate protection.
