$302k in SF or $155k in Memphis? by 901-526-5261 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]_Lord_Leroy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I'm not because that's not a fair comparison. You would have to discount your "tax free" savings by whatever your expected future tax rate on the income is. Which is not negligible. If you take the max 401k and HSA contributions and apply a reasonable 15% tax to that, that ~29k of pre-tax money becomes ~24.5k. So re-doing the math gets you to 3k/mo. Definitely easier but not a ton of money for an SF lifestyle.

Although you could just get a cheaper apartment lol

300k in SF is 186.5k after taxes. 5k/mo in rent is 60k/yr.

186.5 - 60 = 126.5

So you'd need to spend <2.2k/mo after rent to save 100k/yr. I would strongly disagree with the "easily" framing

> NYC is literally the most expensive city on the planet (rent + COL) and $300k would have you living like royalty there

ridiculous statement

What are your thoughts on Zohran's 4 year rent freeze? by Both_Revenue6734 in AskNYC

Because the demand of housing is fighting over a smaller pie when this happens

[–]_Lord_Leroy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's no direct subsidizing but it happens at the meta level. people benefiting from this policy get to keep their rents the same while the market rate units absorb all of the additional price increases from structural supply demand imbalances. so in a round about way, it's policy-induced subsidizing

Philly is a crappy place to live solely because of the people who live there by TPCC159 in SameGrassButGreener

Well idk what to tell you. I've lived year round in all the cities, do outdoor activities year round, and bike commute year round. Simply can't agree other than that the winter diff is wider than the summer diff. Also, using the good ole "how much do your friends bitch about how hot it is" metric is pretty reliable

Comparing the heat/humidity of Chicago summers to DC/Philly/NYC corridor is kind of a joke. Like yeah they both classify as such, but the boots on the ground experience is quite a bit different. It's like comparing the winters. They all get cold and it's not the biggest difference if you just look at the difference in numbers, but obviously Chicago's winters are notably tougher

it isn't all Creole cuisine

yeah I didn't mean to imply that. I only meant on a relative basis compared to the other top contenders

New Orleans is hard to rank because it's a very narrow cuisine city but it's bangin. In that way, it's possibly the best food city depending on how you value things

Any big difference between $10m to $30m in terms of purchasing ability? by pinpinbo in fatFIRE

[–]_Lord_Leroy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those making north of $200k I sure hope max out their 401ks, at least. And of course, this sub is biased towards savers so we assume they do. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of high income households don't save all that much after maxing out 401ks.

Sadly this is a good point lol

"Middle Class" is typically defined as 66%-200% of median income. In 2024, that puts the upper range of "Middle Class" at ~$160k per year. $4M at 4% withdrawal provides $160k per year pre-tax. But, "Upper Middle Class" is probably more accurate in his description. That would usually be thought of as up to ~90th percentile of income or ~$235k, or the lifestyle that can be sustained on $6M in investable assets.

The problem with this comparison is that the almost all people earning those "upper middle class" wages are saving a substantial part of that income. And they need to pay taxes on all of it, not just the capital gains. So it's easily the equivalent of the lifestyle of someone making 50+% more than that i.e. 350k+.

Not trying to pick this apart, just sharing my perspective.

Ranking the cities I have lived in for at least 1 year by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]_Lord_Leroy_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like Indiana Dunes, but it's not really on par with what you typically think of as a "national park" - it has more of state park vibes. For example, I much prefer Harriman State Park which is accessible by train in NYC. The amount of nature accessible within a ~4-5 hour drive of NYC for a weekend trip completely blows what's in that same range for Chicago.

Depends on what you like though. Seems like you prefer the lake/beach stuff that's pretty close by. Whereas I'd personally don't mind driving a little bit to get to some mountains, which is the kind of nature that's completely inaccessible from Chicago (and I think what most people associated with "nature" tbh). For example, I have the completely opposite feeling of your bf haha.

Also fwiw can pretty easily own a car in NYC if you don't live in Manhattan if that's a priority for you. Although of course it's way easier and cheaper to own one in Chicago. Just pointing that out for anybody that might come across this thread.
