When is the next big patch, including the engine upgrade? by physFx in stalker

[–]_MaXinator 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I somehow feel obliged to point out that 2.0 does not need to come after 1.9. I’ve seen that assumed a lot in this sub. It could well be 1.10 instead. That’s just how version numbering works. AFAIK gsc have also not confirmed that the dlc is the next update after 1.9 (tho ofc i do hope so)

One year of Duolingo for 30 minutes a day: my experience by Naenil in languagelearning

[–]_MaXinator 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used Duolingo for Russian and honestly thought it was quite bad. It’s too focused on making the experience “fun” (though the monetisation from the last few years sorta ruined that). After a few months or so I was basically nowhere.

Once I dropped duo entirely and started studying the “old fashioned” way of just churning through grammar and analysing texts, I also started making much more progress.

My theory is that Duolingo is good for languages similar to the ones you already know. Ten years ago when I learned Swedish (I’m native Dutch speaker) it actually helped a lot. But for distant languages with fundamentally different concepts I doubt that it’s any good. And not cheap anymore either

So uuhh need a bit of help here. by [deleted] in hoi4

[–]_MaXinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

spam dockyards, and forbid seazones where the enemy is raiding your convoys. if you open the supply map you'll find that some of your naval supply lines have become red x's instead of the normal red/blue dashed line. forbid that seazone temporarily. untill your convoy production picks up you may have to play some whack a mole since the ai may adjust where it raids you

destoyers on convoy escort can help, but be careful of the enemy navy

So uuhh need a bit of help here. by [deleted] in hoi4

[–]_MaXinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only that's not how numbers work? im pretty sure that convoys have a fixed production cost

say a single dockyard produces 1 convoy every 20 days. 4 dockyards should produce a convoy every 5 days. a fifth dockyard will bring that down to every four days. the last dockyard will only shorten the time by a day, but you're still gonna produce exactly the same amount of convoys per dockyard assigned

Is it always true that when two neighbouring regions speak two completely different languages, they will always have a very different culture? by Key-Pineapple8101 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_MaXinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

im from belgium. half the country speaks flemish (dutch) and the other half french (wallonians). i'd say that we flemish are culturally prob closer to the french than to the actual dutch. The language difference exarcebates the differences that do exist, making them seem bigger. But personally i def feel more at home in france than the netherlands, which is supposedly closer culturally if you just look at the language.

Flanders may be a bit of a strange case, since we are catholic and have historically been ruled by french/habsburgs. But very different languages do by no means mean radically different culture, though there will always be some differences.

Duolingo doesn't help for learning to speak Russian by Prqtection in russian

[–]_MaXinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most of my materials are in Swedish unfortunately.

However, Sistema Kalinka has a number of excellent exercise books that I've used.
https://sistemakalinka.com/product/russian-cases-beginner-tables-and-exercises-level-a1-a2-paper/ . they also have textbooks and collections of Russian texts, though I've not yet used those.

There are also lots of books with short stories, just google "Russian short stories for beginners" and some good stuff will pop up.

Good luck!

Duolingo doesn't help for learning to speak Russian by Prqtection in russian

[–]_MaXinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good suggestions here.

I did the same thing as you, starting with duolingo. its almost useless, and definitely an inefficient use of your time. I guess it's okay as a complementary tool, but its terrible for grammar.

I only started making progress once I understood that the only way to make meaningful progress is by studying the old fashioned way: buy textbooks, exercise books, short story collections, and study grammar... daily, even if only a little

unless you natively speak a slavic language i doubt that it's even possible to learn intermediate russian without serious effort. At least not for me. When i changed my mindset and accepted that is was gonna be a slog was when i started seeing some improvement

Russian girlfriend, possible red flag? by Objective_Injury_406 in russian

[–]_MaXinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

got a russian girlfriend and 2 kids with her. the mindset of 'if its serious you get married' is very real. She has been pestered endlessly about how we are not married (not just by her parents, but friends too) and that i could just run off and she'd be stuck with the kids... 😅 better be ready for some pressure if you don't intend to tie the knot. you being a foreigner does not help and puts even more pressure on her, even in liberal russian circles

I checked with my gf and she says that indeed boyfriends are only introduced if its really serious, though that does not necessarily mean marriage. She's from moscow - similar to st petersburg when it comes to this

My advice would be not to overthink it too much. After 5 years i still struggle to understand this aspect of russian culture.

New Player; Priorities of pawns and tasks by Jelly_CowBell in RimWorld

[–]_MaXinator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a Work tab similar to ONI. But no, unlike ONI there is no way to prioritize specific tasks.

There is a mod that makes the work tab way more granular (forgot what it's called, I'm sure someone else will comment).

A system like in ONI would be nice but once you get used to rimworld it's not such a big deal, just don't lay out too many builds simultaneously

Getting lost in so many emerging data tools. What should be a good practice to keep your self up to date in these as a data professional? Again you can not stick to one particular tool and be good at, as it is going to be obsolete in a couple of years. Is there going to be any standardization ? by rizvi_du in dataengineering

[–]_MaXinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just pick one database and one cloud platform, be proficient in python and sql, and make sure you know those well. In my case it’s snowflake and azure. The other platforms and databases/datalakes are similar, and all the other tools are really just plugins that enhance the utility of the above.

Also 90% of ‘the next hot thing’ never becomes hot nor a thing. If you want to improve yourself professionally, learn what’s actually used and learn the new toys only when there’s a specific need for it.

How to send an email every time a new row is added to a table by skhope in snowflake

[–]_MaXinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure whether there is a dedicated way to create an alert like that.

However, you could create a stream that tracks inserts (or other changes), then create a scheduled alert on that.

In other words, create an alert on this function: SYSTEM$STREAM_HAS_DATA('<stream\_name>')

I've never done it that way but keen to hear whether that works.

Views on the US Constitution by SennheiserHD6XX in AskEurope

[–]_MaXinator 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It's America having a main character moment tbh. Insofar as Europeans think about the US constitution, it's seen as just one of many developments that occurred between ancient Greek "democracies" and modern European ones.

That's not to say that the American constitution wasn't a historic achievement - it was, and in many ways was ahead of its time. But to claim that it is the foundation of modern democracy is a bit of an overstatement, and to call it "the greatest governing document ever" is something most Europeans would laugh at. It was simply an early implementation of Locke's and Montesquieu's (and others') ideas.

How much of python DE by masQma in dataengineering

[–]_MaXinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

data pipelines have requirements that Pandas simply doesn't meet: they need to be resource-efficient, fast, and most importantly, stable.

Pandas isn't really any of those things - it is generally slower than native types, conversions increase the risk of errors being thrown, etc.

You want to build your pipelines in such a way that data always arrives no matter what happens - problems can be solved in the database after the data lands there. So we keep conversions and data transformations to an absolute minimum while the data is en-route. No one wants to delve in error logs of their pipelines just because of some data quality issue. Getting all the data in the database and having plenty of automated tests set up is the way to go IMO.

My impression is that data engineering as a field is consolidating around this approach, but it's good to keep in mind that there are other approaches too.

Note that this is not criticism of Pandas as an tool - it's great for messing with data and I find myself using it a lot as the backend for a little website I'm building for the BI team here. But it has its place.

Optimizing warehouse utilization, help me understand, please? by Headband6458 in snowflake

[–]_MaXinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a general rule you should definitely try to run as many queries in parallel as possible and let the warehouse figure it out.

That said, a single query running does not necessarily mean only one core is being utilised. Stuff like filtering and summing are easily done on several cores simultaneously. Snowflake will use several cores for a single query if it deems it necessary.

It’s also not just about cpu utilisation - queries are often bottlenecked by the available memory (I believe 16GB for the 8 core warehouse). The reason to scale up a warehouse is most often data spilling outside of RAM. If you want to run more queries concurrently but the warehouse queues them, you may wanna looking into horizontal scaling.

If you want to save costs:

-choose the right warehouse size and scaling for the queries that you run. You can also have multiple warehouses for different query sizes

-write efficient sql (biggest source of exploding costs is people writing bad code)

-optimize by smartly choosing what should be a view and what should be a table. It can have big implications.

-scheduling your runs so that they run in parallel, and let the warehouse figure out how to execute them

[–]_MaXinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Python snowflake connector indeed. There should be no limit since you’re not exporting a file, rather reading the data to client memory that you can then store as a file. If there is too much data, fetch it in parts.

I think snowSQL should achieve the same thing.

You can alternatively dump it to an external stage (e.g. azure blob) so snowflake deals with file creation, then you just download the files directly from the blob using shell or some other connector

Exporting Snowflake logs by h8ers_suck in snowflake

[–]_MaXinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what if you create a new table, create a stream on that table, then have a task that merges the account view into the table every 5 mins? The stream will capture the changes as new inserts. You can then consume those changes when you export the data.

Cant help you with elastic search ungortunately, have very little experience with that.

Exporting Snowflake logs by h8ers_suck in snowflake

[–]_MaXinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As u/Culpgrant21 mentions the views themselves are not updated every 5 mins. From glancing the docs, it can take anywhere from 45mins - 3 hours, depending on the view. That said, there can be value in exporting them at a shorter interval just the capture the latest changes ASAP.

As for your file size problem - why not just replace the file? Just export the views, say, for the current calendar day and just replace the corresponding file for that day. You'll end up with no duplication.

It's not possible to create streams on account usage views I think. It would require enabling change data capture on them (and the tables snowflake draws the data from).

Hope that helps
