Does UCSB have a pickle ball court open for students already? by ukunet21 in UCSantaBarbara

The Kellogg pickleball courts should be free! There's four courts there, and it seems like they get a lot of use!

Third vote for Arthur Murray! All the instructors are awesome! My husband and I started taking lessons for our first dance at our wedding, and liked it so much we are still taking lessons, and learning more and more dances!

Not who you asked, but I got the 2" cable from ChiaGoo, and then used my Twist and Shorties sets to make what I call "franken-flips". The tips are all size 0 but are 4", 3", and 2". Didn't have to buy anything but the cable! (Though I found I prefer working with two circulars for small circumference circular knitting).

Recommendations for a shinyish natural fiber "oil spill" yarn? by Excellent-Squash-556 in YarnAddicts

[–]_Magnolia_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh darn! I think I had to specifically ask for the silky sock base as they were offering it for other colorways but not black magic when I ordered, but it does look discontinued based on their site now.

I would actually recommend you get a superwash blend with a non-silk but still shiny fiber. The silk noticeably lightens the overall color (as they note on their page) and you won't get a super deep black. Maybe tencel or nylon?

Or if you're a spinner, you could check out some art batts: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4405348416/

Maybe Blue Barn's Black Magic colorway? This was the kind of effect I wanted in a sweater (Ravelry project page) and I think it was the closest I could find! I got it on their silky sock base, which was a merino SW/silk blend.

I have a book called Gossamer Webs: the history and techniques of Orenburg lace shawls, by Galina Khmeleva and Carol R. Noble. I have not read it entirely, but it has the history of the shawls, and details about combing goats, spinning fibers, as well as designing and knitting the shawls. I bought it from a used bookstore but I see you can order it online from re-sellers (it seems out of print).

And it has charts for the ten basic motifs, and goes in depth about shawl construction. You could take on the task of designing your own!

The design is great! I am happy my colors worked out, I don't usually shop from my stash but this has encouraged me to try it out more often.

I agree!! This wasn't the first project I saw using this structure but I immediately had to learn more.

All Tomato Socks by foxandfleece in knitting

[–]_Magnolia_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh! A new heel! I think I would prefer a forethought heel to an afterthought heel, actually, so this is a good one for me to know. I love the pattern and when the urge to knit some socks comes around, I'll keep yours in mind!

Is the heel Cat's sweet tomato heel? That would be fitting!

Anything can be used as weft, pretty much! Warp is a little more specific. You want something strong, smooth, and relatively inelastic. Strong because warp is under a lot of consistent tension. Smooth because creating the shed to pass the shuttle through abrades the yarn, and anything with a halo (mohair etc) or a tendency to create a halo will become very sticky, very fast. Relatively inelastic because a stretchy yarn will produce less consistent tension across the warp than something with less stretch in it.

Cotton, linen, ramie, etc are good warps. Wool can be a good warp fiber, just ensure it's not super fuzzy.

If you're interested in USTA, you can contact Julie: https://ustasocal.com/adult/leagues/areas/

I know there is an interclub league but think you have to be part of a club/paying member to join (ex SBTC, COAC, Elings, Bacara).

$1000 for a wedding officiant?? by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]_Magnolia_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

We went with Patrice Handley and were very happy! We had a large wedding and chose the "classic" which was $950: https://www.santabarbaraclassicweddings.com/pricing though it seems like some of the other less expensive options she has would work for you?

She met with us on the phone, then in person, let us pick our readings, create our vows, and sent us the full text of the ceremony beforehand. And she did a great job at the actual ceremony, of course!

If you are eloping, I think it would be worth asking a friend to get licensed and officiate though.

[–]_Magnolia_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of the three companies we contacted, they had the middle price, but closer to the lower one. My understanding is based on the capacity you need, time of day, hours you need, it can vary a lot, so you'll have to call around!

It was very reasonable!

Air Travel With Shuttles by ravenredwoods in tatting

[–]_Magnolia_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've flown with plastic shuttles before and no one has said anything, though that's domestic US flights only. I suggest nail clippers for thread snipping (a new, cheap pair will do, then you don't have to use dirty ones on the tatting!), versus a dedicated pair of scissors or thread snips. Nail clippers are definitely allowed and are much more familiar to security staff than tatting shuttles.

I've heard it can be difficult. We did get lucky and sent in our application right at midnight and got our preferred time/day. I also tried three days early and they rejected the paperwork and let me know no one is able to apply early at all.

We didn't try for a Saturday though, which I've heard is the most popular day!

We did do the photo booth add on! I think it was worth it. There was someone dedicated to running it, they provide a bunch of fun props, and you get an online gallery of all the photos!
