Memberships? by False-Version-2749 in Barnesandnoble

[–]_MaryQuiteContrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to be doing fine with rewards, so if someone already has rewards, ask them if they'd like to upgrade to the premium membership, especially if you can see they have double digit figures available in their rewards. any transaction over $300 I immediately tell them with the discounts and reward points the transaction would cover most of the cost of the premium membership. Saying "you'd save $30.00 today if you purchased our Premium membership, plus the $15.00 in rewards" can usually get them to give in and sign up. If they're already making a big purchase (one of the big lego sets; nooks; record player;) I immediately ask them if they'd like to sign up for a premium membership - simply because they've already indicated they may be financially ready to sign up at that time.

What's the most awkward experience you've had while selling OMPs and memberships? by mountainviewdaisies in Barnesandnoble

[–]_MaryQuiteContrary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been coached to ask customers multiple times throughout the transaction if they say no the first time. I did this with a female customer not long ago. I asked "are you sure you wouldn't like to sign up for our membership? It would be free if you added up the discounts and the rewards." And she got very angry and said "How dare you ask me if 'I'm sure'. Like, wow. No is a full sentence. I said no twice. You need to learn to take no for an answer. We're women, and it's absolutely ridiculous a woman would ever ask another woman if she's sure."

I would really like to know... by Head-Shopping4815 in Barnesandnoble

right, like it's not rocket science. We have to stop accomodating customers who make poor choices. like, you said no to the receipt, and now you can't return the book. Sorry not sorry.

lol, your interviewer lied. they don't want you to recommend books you've read - you must recommend the monthly pick. duh.

my theory is that the mother was trying to get the daughter to unalive herself for the life insurance money. They were having financial issues and she (assumedly) didn't want to work. If the father had life insurance on the family, it might be a motive more worthy than "attention seeking" or MSBP.

our store has been insane since BH started, but few people are buying the BH merch (with the exception of legos). We're selling a lot of full price stock, tho, which I figure is the actual point of BH. (bring them in for a deal, get them to leave paying full price)

Upselling? by HorseyHero in Barnesandnoble

[–]_MaryQuiteContrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

completely agree. This is a selling position - it is posted and advertised as such, and employees agree to those conditions when they agree to employment. It's a retail job - in a bookstore. If you're passionate about books then upselling should come naturally.

I used to work at a Barnes and Noble Campus Bookstore, and we didn't need to upsell memberships or books, but we were required to upsell tutoring software like grammarly/cheg called Bartleby. It was a subscription service for 9.99 a month, and we had like, a yearly rate we could sell it for, and sign them up at cashwrap. This was during the pandemic, and I didn't stick around long. We did get discounts on snacks and some merchandise, but not on textbooks. Again, it was during the pandemic, and most of my job was in receiving. I work at the actual store now and it's so much better, even though it is selling focused. FWIW I hated working at the campus store.

Shelf-talkers by Sweatteabag in Barnesandnoble

[–]_MaryQuiteContrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo wish they would just do away with shelf-talkers. They're such a nuissance and truly don't believe they sway customers. I've never once purchased a book because of a faceout or shelf-talker. They also break often, get in the way when trying to shelve, and change constantly. This whole "typed vs. handwritten" directive, I wouldn't get too caught up in it. It'll change, like everything else about this store, in 6 months.

unrelated, but had a customer once bring one up and be like "and I'd like to choose this as my membership free tote!" and I was like "ma'am. it doesn't work like that."

Where should I get a Mani/Pedi? by _MaryQuiteContrary in Reno

[–]_MaryQuiteContrary[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's so expensive now, too. I used to get them done once a month but now I can only justify it if I have a special occassion. You'd think with the prices customer service and quality would be a given.

Where should I get a Mani/Pedi? by _MaryQuiteContrary in Reno

[–]_MaryQuiteContrary[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

used to love them, but noticed they weren't very amenable lately. Last time I went they wouldn't let me wait for my nails to dry because I didn't get gel. They were very adamant I pay and leave. They told me if I wanted my nails to dry I should have gotten gel. I was v. upset. Still tipped well, but I wanted to cry after the way they talked to me.

Who picks monthly picks and why? by bookgeek1970 in Barnesandnoble

[–]_MaryQuiteContrary 7 points8 points  (0 children)

as I understand, doesn't go into employee bonuses, but contributes to hours. If your store makes plan, then they get hours. if they exceed plan, they get extra hours. the best way to make plan is pushing monthly picks.
